The rotary was created by F.Wankel who was a Dutch residing in Germany. Mass produced by Mazda, Datsun had a shot first but did not invest in the idea afraid that the Mexicans will steal it to ilegally power air cooled VW taxis in Mexico City. At the end became like crack for Australians and Puerto Ricans that starved their kids tuning 12a and 13b and later created kidnapping organizations to sell organs in the black market so they can play with 13B-Rew's. Well he died about 20 years ago! Yes of course Mazda are the rotary leader but then again they were/stil are the only company to have continued developing it since the 1970's. The premature engine wearing problems of the early rotaries bankrupt the german NSU company in the end (VW AUDI bought them and slowly killed the NSU brand name) due to so many engine replacement claims under warranty.

Felix wankel invented the rotary, a German! NSU used it first. Mazda bought a licence to build them.
