Every time I listen to Ramsey I think about how much I miss and love Chicago! Ramsey plays so pretty, makes me want to slip into something comfortable, turn the cruze control on and go for a long ride!
@Sethrod8 It is the simple things that I cherish, I love to drive and listen to beautiful music! Even this is a blessing! Have a wonderful week ahead! Thanks for your comment!
@Bearkiller72 Well seeing how bands like Azymuth got through the 80's and the 90's with retaining the good sound, I wouldn't say "screw 80's" with such ease. In my opinion, all was good til the mid-90's, that's when cash started to seriously kick in and bash on the soul of music.
@noiz87 Please see my comment as regarding music in general, as a
perception of the change of style it has taken, moving from one decade to another, with a definite major change between 78-82, "brass" almost died out, synth's took over the drummer's role and least - where's the E-Piano gone?
Seems to me, during the 80's pale white kids, who knew how to program a synth
of whatever brand - got their way... To me it's just sad.
Well I can't say you're wrong, you're 15 years ahead of me, and you've been around longer than me, of course you'll appreciate other eras, instruments, ways to play music. I guess I'm more tolerant towards synths and the new way/wave because I grew up with the 90's music.
Synths flooded the scene, but the heritage they've left is important (to my generation). Many steps forward in electronica were made. Unfortunately, funk/jazz suffered badly. Still, brass lives on, but underground
Man you just dont anyone doing stuff like this today. All today's folks do is sample and find ways not to actually play an instrument. True musicians back in the day. I still love seeing acoutic instruments too.Horns, upright bass etc.
i have a deep love for this kind of music, but to simply write off all modern music is a little heavy handed, if you cant find quality music being made you quite simply are not looking hard enough.
i have a deep love for this kind of music, but to simply write off all modern music is a little heavy handed, if you cant find quality music being made you quite simply are not looking hard enough.
@oldschoolbbass well if you think people shouldnt sample then you just inilated hip hop. Hip Hop was created off of sampling, its an artform. Try to be musically well-rounded
This was the best cut from Ramsey since "Sungoddess" at the time. Actually, that's Ndugu on drums not Fred White. Don Myrick on sax who was fatally shot shortly thereafter. A real decent song, thank you for the memories.
thats GOT to be don myrick....this sounds like a groove ewf did during the sun godess jams...sweet, smooth and evrything else...bass line and percussion doesnt get much better than this..thanx for the post
This came along during the time the slapping/popping bass playing style was getting popular among many of the artist. Many seem to contribute the slap style to Larry Graham but I thought it was Stanley Clarke who started it. So i guess my question is in two parts. 1. Who started it ? 2. Who made it famous or popular ?
Nope Larry Graham, Bootsy even stated so during a documentary about soulmusic. Bootsy was doin slappin a bit after Larry Graham was doin it. Its even on youtube where he states so.
larry graham opened the door with sly and the family stone "Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin)"...that was late 1969...bootsy and stanley came in the early 70's...then louis johnson and jaco pastorius...will lee...alphonso johnson...marcus miller....by then the flood gates were open
mark is definitely top 10...what i like about him he gets good note separation when he is slapping and pulling up to a certain speed...my only criticism is after a certain point it sounds like he is playing a lot of noise and not playing in control
I doubt it because of when it was recorded. Then again, who knows, they were great friends and maybe he did. This cut is off the "Salongo" lp and it doesn't list Maurice as drummer.
By the sound of the patterns being played and the actual sound of the drums, it sounds like Fred White is playing drums on this cut. Fred White joined EWF around this time.
Produced by Maurice White. Remember hearing this on a Best of Ramsey Lewis lp. I think famous songwriter, producer and arranger Charles Stephney assisted Maurice on this cut before he passed on. EWF's "Spirit" album is dedicated to him.
I sampled this song. it's an amazing song!
