@frosty956 I've tried a few different brands of quarter watt carbon film resistors and they all work. They do go open circuit, but get white hot and emit flames in the process. You can't just keep re-using them, you need a new one each time.
@darkarchon777 Using a lower voltage like a 7.2v racing pack would require the use of a lower value resistor like 3.3 ohm and the current would be higher causing issues with voltage drop along the trigger cable. I'd recommend sticking with 12V and 10 ohm with a battery pack made up of 8 or 10 AA cells. You can get 12V racing packs, but they are not as common as the 7.2 or 8.4 volt versions.
@darkarchon777 A rechargeable battery like the RC car type would be good because they can supply a lot of current. For a lower voltage you'd need to experiment with the resistor value a bit.
For all you guys having trouble remembering the table or are still looking of a "cheat sheet", I wrote a free program to help you out. Here is the link to the quick tutorial on how to use the program. The download link is in the description. youtube.com/watch?v=nolRA9ZmK-U
wow, good idea. will i be able to use this to ignite an rc smoke pellet from my rc heli reciever? im going to use a spare channel from my helicopter reciever and use 2 wires hooked up to the resistor and then the resistor will sit in the smoke pellet. i hope u ccan help :P
Nice! Using a resistor as a igniter is both easy to do and cheap!
But I have a question... does it have to be a 10 ohm 1/4 watt resistor, or is there other resistors which can be used as well? In that case, which ones?
@Didrik147 It could be an eighth watt resistor and chosen to suit whatever voltage was available. I only tried 10 ohm quarter watt because it seemed like a good choice for a 12V trigger supply.
and does it needs to be a 10 Ohm or can it be less and how much W does i need than and i got a battery of 9 V what resistor do i need to have to let it burn???
hey Rizz, it's " BAD BOYS RAPE ONLY YOUNG GIRL BUT VIOLETA GIVES WILLINGLY " my stupid principal scolded me for using this for teaching color codes LOL
Or the much more memorable version:- Black Boys Ride Our Young Girls, But Virgins Go Without. Black-0-Black Boys-1-Brown Ride-2-red Our-3-Orange Young-4-Yellow Girls-5-Green But-6-Blue Virgins-7-Violet Go-8-Grey Without-9-White.
It ain't PC but then I was in Electronics classes in the 70s. We had:- Black Boys Rape Our Young Girls, But Virgins Go Without. Black-0-Black Boys-1-Brown Rape-2-red Our-3-Orange Young-4-Yellow Girls-5-Green But-6-Blue Virgins-7-Violet Go-8-Grey Without-9-White. Jeez!
too bad the many new resistors are designed to burn open circuit, so they dont work as ignitors...

can you re-use it??

@TheErikFasterling he can't he burned off the resistor

when all else fails, and you can't figure out how to identify color bands, add and multiply etc...
you can always use a multimeter.
you need to ohm it anyway to make sure it is within tolerance before you use it.
SOME people actually use them in circuits where they need to work as intended.

nice a 100ohm resistor
nollydolly99 1 year ago
@nollydolly99 ten ohm actually.

@bigclivedotcom 10?
brown = 1
black = 0
and as i see it it's brown black black =1 0 0
or is it like 10,0?
nollydolly99 1 year ago
@nollydolly99 it's dubbel black. look at the colors at the resistor
nollydolly99 1 year ago
@nollydolly99 The third band is the multiplier (the number of zeros.) Black is none, brown is one zero, red is two zeros, etc.

will two 9 volts do the trick and still work with the 10ohm

thx a bunch man. but how many volts do i need? a dude had 7.5 volts his mah was 1800. will one of those work.

how about a rechargeable battery like the ones used in rc cars? how many volts and mah do i need to burn the resistor? thx in advance

do you mean a rechargeable 12volt battery? will it work with 2 9volt batteries in series
darkarchon777 1 year ago
@darkarchon777 If the batteries can supply enough current then yes. But typical small PP3 batteries may not be able to supply the required current.

@Didrik147 As long as the U^2/R is much bigger then the max power of the resistor you could use any

how much W do i need to have for this
and does it needs to be a 10 Ohm or can it be less and how much W does i need than and i got a battery of 9 V what resistor do i need to have to let it burn???
pls tell me

You sound like my kind of guy. I took a brown black black and hooked it across 12 volts before. It was fun. Next time use 1/8 watt resistors.
