I completely understand what you mean. Still, the Cloud (a.k.a. Google's servers) is still technically a place. The only thing that's different is... if there's a problem on Google's end (e.g. server goes down) I can't really do anything about it but sit on my thumbs and send angry emails until it's resolved. I'm sure there are others that would agree that the safest place is some sort of storage medium located in one's own home.

For one, ChromeOS doesn't compete against Windows.... for now at least. It's only competition i can see currently Unbuntu for netbooks/notebooks. The only thing good that can come of this is that both will benefit kernel wise, since they're both similar on the inside. Both OS are linux based after all.

Great, an OS for my 5 year old. :p People have to understand, you are giving up your information to a corporate entity. One that usually does not respect privacy. What do you think they're gonna do with all your data sitting there? Admire it and keep it locked up? No, they will study, analyze, perhaps even sell it. Tread lightly people. Your information will no longer be owned by you, but by a corporate entity.

@Requisition I never mentioned Microsoft? But now that you mention it, with Windows 8 they plan to get people to connect to the cloud in order to use it, apparently. Scary shit, when they try to get your whole OS to synchronize with their servers. Google it, lol. Also, I run Linux. Which btw, under the distribution of Ubuntu, they've already delved into this arena Google is trying to delve into. That being notebooks. Google that too, lolol.

@MrMono I feel like you're getting further away from it, but what I'm trying to say is that whether or not it is in the cloud gives them no more access to such information than normal. Just because it is on the cloud doesn't mean they are watching you any more than Micrsoft is on Windows.

@Requisition Well, that's debatable to be honest. I also believe that frame of mind is somewhat self-defeating in a sense. However, I don't understand why you keep bringing in Windows though. For one, ChromeOS doesn't compete against Windows.... for now at least. It's only competition i can see currently Unbuntu for netbooks/notebooks. The only thing good that can come of this is that both will benefit kernel wise, since they're both similar on the inside. Both OS are linux based after all.

@MrMono The reason I compare it to Windows is because you have just as much reason to worry about they monitoring your private information as much as you do with Chrome OS. Not to mention Google has invaded our lives with so many other products I wonder what information they wouldn't already know about me.

@Requisition Right, I still don't understand why you're bringing in Windows. You just randomly brought it up? Yes, we know they can be just as sneaky. I am not defending windows nor borught it up? This isn't about Windows. I don't use Windows. If you do, then that's your business. Anyway, if people want their files/data in sync with other computers, check out Dropbox. Been around for years. ChromeOS obsolete at that point. The End.

@MrMono Windows is just another example of an OS. The reason I bring it up, is because you have equal reason to believe with any OS that they may be observing, studying, analyzing, and selling your private information. Their is no reason to single out Google or Chrome OS for this anymore than anyone else. As a user of Dropbox, it is hardly the same as Chrome OS, but that is a different discussion entirely.

@Requisition Ok, assuming this and that doesn't prove a thing regardless? I could easily say the government is watching us right now, doesn't mean it's true? I don't use Windows, so I'm not going into it, but I've used several Google products and I do know, for a fact, Google monitors users via various "products" they offer and profit from it. Dropbox is relevant because it uses the same technology, Google is trying to push: Cloud computing. Simply that Dropbox doesn't require a new OS to run :p

Just saying it doesn't mean it is true, as far as knowing for a fact that Google will be doing this with any private information, I'm going to remain skeptical unless you have some proof. I never said that Dropbox was irreverent, just that it was unrelated to what we were talking about. On that note, Dropbox isn't cloud computing at all. Dropbox is nothing more than cloud file storage.

But do they observe your browsing history in impeccable detail? No. Because in reality it would cost far too much money to try and terrorise their own customers.

Webmail resides on the cloud, and Internet email is sent as plain text over the Internet for anybody to sniff, and browsing or downloading from a website reveals your IP address, so the Internet isn't private if you use email or browse the web, whatever OS you use. I guess that's why Bin Laden didn't have an Internet connection even though he apparently used Windows.
I guess that if you're a criminal, terrorist, or paedophile, then Chrome OS is not for you

Imagine this: hackers hacking into your one and ONLY google account ( why do you think they recently changed/forced everyone to LINK their accounts to a GOOGLE account?). Ok, so we have one account for EVERY service on Google. All our sensitive information at the fingertips of anyone savvy enough to break in. Now lets remember the Chinese hackers that were able to break into Google. Have a nice day. :D

@MrMono How is this any different than the risk that hackers hack into your one and ONLY personal computer? What about the risk that somebody breaks into your house and steals your computer? What if you walk outside with your laptop and you get mugged? What if your hard drive fails or your house burns down? Dont even get me started on viruses... Risk is the probability of a problem times the damage done by the problem. To me, cloud based storage seems like the least risky option.

@bbl4tter Your computer isn't connected to the internet 24/7. Hurrrrr duuuuurrrrrr. It's less vulnerable in that respect. You act as if Chrome OS won't be vulnerable to any sort of malicious attack. You're living in a fairy tale if you believe it will be virus free. Android sure isn't. Where there is a will, there is a way.

@ChromeBooks101 It's not. They're doing it right now at various levels, why wouldn't they do it more when the opportunity is completely set up to do so? Why do you believe Google Adsense ads are so precisely targeted to things you've googled in the past? It's not by luck or chance :p And you act as if they're making the OS completely from scratch. Chrome OS is Linux based, so they saved tons of cash. They're building on years of work of others. Just like they did with Chrome (webkit from Apple)

@ChromeBooks101 I understand your point of view, but I think it's a fairly "innocent" perspective. Why does any company want to make money? Because they can. No company is invincible. This is why Facebook was recently caught in a Google smear campaign. Why would fb want to do that, if they supposedly are on top of the game? Because there's always competition to see who can gain more, over the other. Who will buy out who. Who will survive. Remember MySpace? people thought they were invincible.
