The reason they would want to draw attention away from BT is so no one pays attention to him, or even cares about him, so they could hurt or kill him and get away with it. BT said that his small town cops suck. So they could get away.

Go look up marble hornets wiki for a tweet timeline & a overall theory for the story. It's a story that Anthony saw, liked & is simply copying. Also go look @ Haydns2cents to see that this is simply a interactive online story like marble hornets was.
