A strange hybrid of teen hillbilly slasher movie, postmodern film noir and David Lynch-ian surrealism. This is a brilliant, but disconcering and disorientating trip...I love it.
There WERE no "liner notes" on the original vinyl LP when I bought it, and Wikipedia wasn't invented yet! A whole lotta personal "coding" going on , though. Just sayin...don't get mad at Canada, lol!
Always catch myself whistling this song to myself. A young woman's quest for meaning is sidetracked by her much-coveted sexuality, and she fails to find meaning in other people, so what's left? What an awesome album. Especially Uncle Remus' occasional epigrams that show up throughout. I love everything about this album and this song especially.
I am glas that it is that way - i am glad that these greedy slimy creeps don't have the grabs on that music - because THIS music belongs to us - the lovers.
@rosablanca13 whether that's true or not, we'll never know. Snakefinger is sadly, long gone, and the Residents don't speak. And while there are fans of both still here, the world hardly cares of the affairs of masked men.
Epopée des nains dans l'Ouest Américain, des nains si possible vêtus de cirés jaunes et de bonnets pointus. Oui, c'est ce que ça m'évoque, où est le problème? En tout cas, c'est vraiment magnifique. Wagnérien, même.
@paulsbreakfast "Commercial Album" and beyond is the best. The newer stuff with all the freeze-dried synthesizers is not as good in my opinion-with the exception of their CD-Rom games!
I curse MTV for making New Wave music video about bilge like madonna and duran duran instead of music like the Residence, Klaus Nomi, Kraftwerk and Einsturzende Neubauten.
@ysbaddaden2003 Hey now, occasionally MTV lets some brilliant stuff on there. And let's not forget the residents lent some great soundtrack work to Henry Selick's "Slow Bob" animated short for Liquid TV! (A brilliant piece of programming whose content largely came from the experimental comics artists of 'RAW') In fact my introduction to The Residents was seeing third reich n' roll 'land of a thousand dances' on MTV as a very little kid! (Like in the early 80s)
@ysbaddaden2003 Well, can you blame them. I love the Residents and hate Madonna, but the general public couldn't understand the Residents music, and MTV, as a corporation, has to play what the public wants
@fat8622 It's the reverse. The public want what MTV play. Over time anything will grow on them when they start thinking "should i be liking this? if they think it's worth airing it must be brilliant... yeah i fking love it! Residents!!!11"
This would be insane while high. Some parts would be hard to listen to without flipping out: I think I'll get that feeling that I'm expanding to huge, explosive proportions, and if I don't move I'll feel too intense. I always stop the feeling when its about to be that intense (by flipping out, laughing), and I only get it when I meditate or listen to music that's conducive to a trancy/transcendental state. I'm gonna try not backflipping when i hear this fu-baked and see where it takes me.
"The matter that's been spoken of 's a fragrant little thing, it's open and was known to need a token diamond ring". Yayy! diddly dum and a big bag of whoopy snorp.
Um really? did you um write it? It's all hearsay AFAIC- anyone's guess (including yours) goes :-) the lyrics have never been published by anyone official....um!
Sure they have been! I have it on a sheet that came with a Ralph catalog from '84 i guess (next to it was an interview with Homer who explained the "wissenberries" as "poissenous berries" and on...
To people who only listen to mainstream/radio play, I am sure this song would seem long. If someone is used to 3 minute pop/rap diddies, I'm sure 9 minutes is huge...
Music is not something to "dance" to, unless that was the intention of the musical writer.
Wasn't the name of that album a parody of all those "artists" who are not even interested in making it sound like their album was something special? And instead of that throwing random pictures of the artist on it and literally screaming buy MY album! I am on it! Its COMMERCIAL!
Thanks and please post more from this album. The Residents really went downhill after the Mole Show, and became just a vehicle for Homer's poetry. Their early stuff is pure genius.
Recently spoke with Hardie Fox. He isn't aware of any 'Chinese Ballet' video that goes with The Making of the Soul......if anybody has footage of it please add it. It's black and white and looks old but it's amazing.
Perchè all'inizio c'è la copertina di Eskimo? La canzone non era di Not Available? Comunque questa penso che sia una delle mie preferite dei Residents, sono fortissimi! Non c'è nessun gruppo al mondo che assomiglia a loro, sono unici!
I first heard the Residents on shrooms and threw up. It took my twenty five years to realise that at the time of that encounter they were probably the best rock music I'd ever heard. Weird how stuff works out, huh?

any one notice you can play almost any two residents songs together and they will sound like they go together? Someone should start making YT vids like this, i don't know how
Ahhh..great music. I really want to know what the kid says in the epilogue. I hear it as "op-u-lent givings are seldom a dread, they help you relieve all them lies in your head, but for the givings you get (?) leave open a window and let in some rain".
I love this song. It's like five different songs in one. "But now they say, there's room no more for such a friendly whore." Outerspace, Easter Island, and rhymes. Thanks.
Apparently, only 300 original LP copies of this album were ever made... makes me feel pretty lucky that I actually own one of them
