  • @KILLERB3JOE Tony Monaco Rules!

  • Hi Brett, I hope you remember us... We are responsible for the video portion of Tony playing Midnight Special recorded live at the Park Street Tavern. We wanted to let you and your fans know that we are in completion of the documentary entitled KillerB3. Enjoy!

  • that like at 9:17- 9:21 is nasty... besides everything else he's doing...

  • Better than any drugs you could find .........brillliant music !!

  • Great!!!!

  • Very awesome! and i do mean VERY! :)

  • GREAT FEELING!!! =))

  • yea he got it

  • what was that secord to that last chords that was played at 12;20

  • Tony Monaco's got a new fan! Great Stuff

  • how do you call this music? just jazz or an other name? Like bebop?

  • Sounds like Sonny was playing on the last chorus of the tune "St. Thomas.", just a guess.

  • Wow......

    The best there is.

  • As long as I'm here too Tony !!!

  • .well you know, he's got it.

  • I play almost exactly like this (only not as good, obviously).. but I try so hard not to make those same faces he's making.... people ask me why I do them and I get really embarrassed

  • @danslatente I know this reply is a bit late, but couldn't help but reply. Anytime a musician is making faces, he/she is "in the zone" with the music they're playing and usually can't help it because they're really feelin what they are playing. I know how you feel because I got some of the same responses as you have and was at one embarrassed by it until I saw more and more musicians doing something similar.

  • @danslatente Just think of it this way...most musicians and even athletes that make faces are very good at what they do. The facial expressions is one of their signature marks ( think of Micheal Jordan especially when he goes for a slam dunk). Don't be embarrassed...it's all good!

  • WOW, I am completely impressed!

  • listen to the spirit of the hammond !

  • I had a buddy send me this link.....I'm so glad he did. Freakin' incredible.!!!!

I have always loved Jimmy.....and you did him justice. Tony....your talents are mind blowing,, man. Thx for doing this...FANTASTIC loved this.. !

    All the best,

    Wolf

  • I had a buddy send me this link,,,I'm so glad he did. !! :-) The magic in this.. is incredible....have always loved those amazing B-3 players....freakin' wow ....OUTSTANDING !!!

    Wolf.....BRAVO ya' da' man

  • yak.

  • The Burnin man is always hot !

  • Tony is soooooo bad! Not just a player, but a performer!!!!!!!!

  • This left me breathless just watching this hard working guy Great

  • I KNOW HIM!!!!! HE IS MY BFFFFS GRANDPA

  • wow this is incredible playing thanks JP (JAZZIFARIAN70 ) FOR SENDING THE VIDEO MY WAY TOO COOL

  • hey jazzviidguy-

is the opening shot a clip from that sonny rollins outdoor concert where he's wearing the red shirt and white pants and jumps off the high stage into the bushes during his solo? I've been looking for that....thnx

  • Yes, taken from the film, Saxophone Colossus.

  • Pure gold. Nice groove. This music just swings. More please.

  • Tony is awesome and thanks for turning me on to him! Guitarist doesn't seem to lock into his single notes well with this heavy handed vibrato , but he's playing all the right ones. Perhaps a 335 might have improved things. His chord use is very sweet! The drummer has an awesome shuffle in the back of the pocket and is steady as a rock. Tony lays it down with and can hang on to a lick like a dog with a bone! I do favor his solo work with more leslie use and or vibrato/chorus.

  • Thanks JazzVideoGuy. The intensity and total control he has of his instrument is awesome. Thanks for turning me on to this guy. One thing... where can I get his recordings?...This guy should adopt Smith as his second last name because indeed, Jimmy Smith is alive and well through his music. I am so impressed, and I am not easy to impress. I too have been performing since I was10 years old, now I'm 51 so I know talent when I see it and this gentleman is really at the top of his game.

  • OMG. I've never seen playing like this.

  • That is some fine, fine playing; Jimmy would love it!

  • Tasty, Nasty B 3 Groovin

  • hey jazzvideoguy, whats the name of the tune at the beginning??? is there a video/recording of it!?>?? thanks

  • @tomorronow It's an improvsation, not recorded, just what you see and hear, in this clip.

  • What a great video! I first saw Tony at Comfest in Columbus several years ago. I stood right behind him for the entire show, right between the two Leslies! He's the Ferrari of the B3 players,

    and a great guy.

  • So what is that first song called ?

  • From 400 the melody 6 5 6 5 sounds like Soft Winds , which Benny Goodman played as a 16 bar blues, but 12 here

  • He lives by me.

  • Just saw Tony Monaco at Dana street coffee house in Mt. View Ca.He is a Master at the B3 the best..What an inspiration to those that are lucky enough to see him live. Thanks Tony

  • What a joy to go a concert and hear a "sermon" still on B3 organ. not many left who can hit with the fire and intensity. Dr Lonnie is still hittin with fire and a few others, Joey DeFrancesco, Jr. I heard Tony for the first time live in San Francisco in North Beach at the Old Purple Onion back in 2004. He a real character to boot. East coast energy!

  • have been a j.s. fan since late 60's. have also been a winwood fan. they get similar sounds on some songs including blind man, low spark, mozambique, dirty city, and feelin good by traffic. some spencer davis organ too. love that compressed sound the b3 puts out.

  • le he dado a "impresionante" pero porque no hay adjetivos como "supremo" o "de otro jodido planeta"...

  • Very nice, Bret. Thanks.

  • there was a guy in Erie, PA years ago who could do just that...play the bass line with his feet...the comp the left and solo with his right. He was a blind guy by the name of Jack Todd...he died years back...I caught him once and couldn't believe it...the same effect I get when I see and hear Barbara Dannerlein...he had three or four spheres in his brain or something...magical

  • Check out Tommy Emmanuel Blue Moon, he does so on his guitar. The music UNIONS don't like it.

  • Really sweet T. Really sweet.

  • What a virtuoso! True emotion flowing through his hammond hands! Great tribute. I'll have to say the guitar solo was a bit weak but organ-oh-god! Like the way he milks his riffs for a whole 12 bars!

Hats off to Tony Monaco and Jimmy Oscar Smith!!

  • What is weak about that guitar solo? Because he's not playin' a million notes? He's got great feel brotha. That is where it's at.

He played some real tasty stuff. He swings behind the beat and is just relaxed and groovin'. If you ask me, a lot of guitar players woud do well to take note.

I'd rather hear a few well placed notes than a torrent of Bull sh!t any day.

  • Excellent.

Remember hearing Peter and the Wolf by Jimmy Smith when I was at school in Scotland 40 years ago. Something magnetic about his playing. Tony Monaco has a lot of style.

  • Introduction JVP - funny!

    Tonys story - enthusiastic!

Jimmy Smith on the ohoyhoy - amazing!

influence and groove - 2nd to nothing!

Think i'll watch this again a few times!

    Thankyou!

    Keep that Leslie whirring!

    Much love out!

    DJ Robbie Peru X

  • Great job on the hammond....used to play on that long time ago...good souvenirs

Guitar player not on 440...but still as a lot of talent...When playing live...this does happen...the show must go on.

Long life to you guys and keep Jimmy alive.

    Pierre from l'Assomption Qc.

  • Hello Pierre,

Can you explain what not on 440 means? Is he out of tune?

    Thanks!

    Mark

  • H want to say the player not use a Gibson 440 ... he probably use another guitars... Sorry for my bad english

  • @108251st Sorry I took so long to answer...not on 440 means out of tune.

But the guitarist as a nice talent . new stings on a guitar tend to do that sometimes.

maybe the guy forgot to tune before the show.....anyway i love the trio...good job guys.. From Pierre !!!

  • @painma I meant new strings (sorry)

  • Tony & his Trio play The Blues like a giant building construction...they go to the last floor and come back with lot of emotion & blood... just incredible & amazing !!!

Sorry for my poor English .... but I love this guys !!

    tks for post again Bret...

    from Brazil

    Jeff

  • I disagree! - the guitarist's play's very tasty,

helping Tony get the proper mood.

  • Tight knit stuff. It was nice to hear that Jimmy Smith phoned you at one point of your life.

  • Tony you are great, and a lot like Jimmy Smith. But your guitar player plays out of tune!!!

  • keep on playing baby............

  • great great great!

  • Hi Tony,

This s wings.Jimmy Smiths's jazz is soft like Bill Evans. You have nailed it!!!

    \Bob

    Laguna Woods,Ca

  • dennerlien Your statement that Jimmy Smith is soft lets me know that you don't know Jimmy Smith and that you didn't hear what Tony said regarding Jimmy Smith.

  • Hi Samadjhi,

Its great to discuss these great players!!!What I wanted to say, after listening to a least 20 Jimmy Smith discs you can hear a lot of chords that are soft jazz that sound a lot like Bill Evans.I am not saying all his music is soft!!

    Bob

    Laguna Woods Cal.

  • I like Dennerlien, Tony Monaco, Jimmy Smith and so many more!!! You all inspire me and I love the Hammond organ!

  • Experiencing a Hammond in any way, ranging from playing a few quick notes on a Sam Ash demo model to rescuing one from the trash, changes the way you play. Seriously, see for yourself.

  • Jimmy Smith change your life, Tony but Tony Monaco change my life, you just great i have look your videos just like you said you watched Jimmys videos...

    WOW

  • Excellent post and keep on burnin' Tony.

  • great video! did anyone know the name of the guitarplayer?

  • it's write at the end

  • incredible solo!!!

  • Wow!!

  • I've watched this "Midnight Special" one thousend times! Tony Monaco is absolutely the world's best organist today! And actually, I've learned a lot watching it! Great Tony!

  • does tony play bass pedals?

  • no.

  • Anyone that knows Hammond and listens carefully can tell when he's in the pedals, and more than just tapping for accent.. He probably does more pedal lines than most, although like most, most bass lines are in the left hand.

  • Thanks for the lecture, smart ass. Though my question was rather if he "usually" plays the pedals (especially when he's playing with a band); it wasn't related to this specific video.

  • You're quite welcome, even though you're thin-skinned, insecure, and arrogant. Meanwhile, for the next 3 seconds- I'll feel bad, if you want me to.

  • Exactly. The 'kickin' bass' myth is precisely that. The only jazz organist I've ever heard who could play pedals, comp in his left hand, and play blistering solos is Bobby Jones, who played w/ Bobby Militello. I don't know if he's still alive, but he's the best I've heard, and his solos were surgically precise. No sloppin' around on blooze scales either

  • No doubt, he does som incredible things on that B3 !

  • Absolutely WONDERFUL, Tony !!!!!

Its a killer !!! Maybe I can learn something here.. hopefully....

Midnight Special in this version is THE shit !!

  • Tony is an incredible musician, and a man who deserves much more recognitio.

  • @JazzVideoGuy That’s “the swinging organ jazz”, ain’t difficult with such a guitar player and drummer.

    Sound’s great Tony.

  • What is the song in the beginning with the beast ending- where can I find a video of the whole song?

  • How great that Tony is now given back and doing for players exactly what Jimmy did for him... A monster player and a monster gentleman..

    Thanks Tony

  • CAN SOMEONE PLEASE! tell me what is the name of that song that tony is playing at the start of the video? he's making that that B3 is scream

  • It's "Midnight Special" by Jimmy Smith.

  • Nope but thanks, midnight special is the song after the interview, i want to know the name of the song at the beginning and during the interview :)

  • I also really want to know where to find the start song! (the one playing while Tony is talking at the beginning).

    Kickin' the B!

  • Where do you get off on putting people down and saying that Jimmy smith is better than Oscar Peterson, they play to completely different instruments you idiot! You trying to make up for something you feel a little insufficient about?? you dick! Put that in your pipe and smoke it asshole.

  • First of all it was Oscar that told me that Jimmy played better piano than he did, and I ain't into putting any human being down! I love all human beings even if I don't particularly like them! I don't like you because you use profanity-no need for that brother!! A great keyboard player can play any keyboard insturment well! Genesis-chapter 4-verse 21!

  • OP is known to have claimed that the reason he didn't play organ was that it would have a bad effect on his piano technique. I'm a classically trained pianist, and a student of B3 hammond trio. When you come to the organ, it's exceedingly difficult to unlearn piano technique.

  • Tony: Jimmy taught me to play "scorched earth groove" on the B3 just like you! Barbara Denerlein thinks she's so great, but she just don't got it! Too much commercial hype and just no soul. Jimmy could play better than Oscar Peterson on acoustic grand, and he is the only cat I knew that could play the B3 backwards just as good as forwards!! Put that in your pipe and smoke it!!

  • There isn't a way in the world that Smith was better than Peterson on piano. There was no evidence in the body of Smith's work that he was anywhere near up to that task.

Most organists suck on piano, because they've leaned too hard on the organ 'sound' for their voice. While it's true that pianists are likewise not natural organists, the cross-over from piano to organ is much easier accomplished.

    Two words: Larry Goldings.

  • o'dog what u sayin is like heresy!. smith couldn't play bass pedals???. it's like u kicked the pope in the azz.this guy bobby jones, better than the b3 god smith???. i gotta hear this dude, what "CD"s" is he on?. and this larry goldings.

  • Congratulations!!! Fantastic!

  • thank god tony is back in Columbus for me to see at the Ravari room every wednesday.!!!for free...cant wait to talk a walk with him again- loves to Anthony----

  • Great Soul !!!!

  • Isn't repeating one riff over an entire chorus a bit extensive?

  • The Blues was MEANT to be played on the B3

  • My favourit organist, thx.

  • I bow down to you sir.....Just to even play a B-3 has always been a dream for me, yet to fulfill...

  • you can do it!!!! never too late!!!!! I did it and God blessed me he can do the same for you too!!

  • Very Nice!

And still enjoying 'Dot Com Blues CD' every single day!

  • Talent+100%. Mr T.M. is (with joey De Francesco) THE main man in hammond B3 blues............ Jazzvideoguy (or anyone) : if you have any footage of the great Jimmy playin "Got my Mojo Workin"..... then i think that more than a few would like to see it!

  • WOW! You sound exactly like him. May he rest in PEACE.

I remember back in the day. Very Nice.

  • Thanks JazzVideoGuy for proving again that Jazz is not dead.

  • "Who the hell is the sax player at beginning?", It is none other than Sonny Rollins, Sonny ROLLINS, dig?

  • I like Tony's version of midnight Special better-its seems to be more structured. I would love to meet him one day.

  • That was a truely fantastic piece of B3 playin str8 from the heart and soul....... jimmy Smith does live on. Thankyou Tony Monaco.

  • I like it. He's doing what Gene Harris did as a piano player. Tony's got a great timing.

  • That's it... Jimmy lives!

  • Excellent video.

Who the hell is the sax player we see at the beginning?

where can i see the entire tune ?

  • Makes me smile and the feeling goes deep. Thanks for being so... Musical!

  • How to make sunshine outta B3...

  • Mama mia! Bellissimo! Wonderfull!!! Vasili from Russia

  • Yes, yes, Thanks so much "JazzVideoGuy". I have all of his CD's and his Instructional Video #4 with his autograph on every one. I boogey down the road listening to them. LOL!

  • Yeah Yeah Yeah! Thanks to "JazzVideoGuy" for shoving this down the old YouTube so that it popped out the other end. Wouldn't be able to see it otherwise would we? Top marks to that "JazzVideoGuy" guy! Many thanks. SB.

  • what a cool story

  • Left Hand :walking Bass, beautiful. The more often I hear this group, the more I like it. It needs a Trombone added.10 out of 10 for the filmmaker.

  • Everytime I hear you Tony, I cannot believe my ears. If I can ever play just a little like you do, I will be happy. Thanks!

  • Yea Tony, you go head on i hear you.

  • As a musician and as an electronics freak... Amazing!

  • son of god playing better and better, music(blues) is the vehicel of worship of the SPIRIT alive in us
