Haha! I know, that's why I thought it was funny & posted it here. Apparently Investopedia is, I would say conservative run, but more likely Corporate run. :)
Wait, where do the bonuses come from? If it comes from inside the company, who cares? It's their company. Why do they have to get permission from the SEC?
A benefit given by the government to groups or individuals usually in the form of a cash payment or tax reduction. The subsidy is usually given to remove some type of burden and is often considered to be in the interest of the public.
Politics play an important part in subsidization. In general, the LEFT is more in favor of having subsidized industries, while the RIGHT feels that industry should stand on its own without public funds.
@jamey9199 - You have got it backwards. The rightest Republicans give rich elitist corporations subsidies and tax breaks even if a corporation murders 11 of its own people due to poor decisions. The left Democrats want regulation and oversight that would stop this disaster. The Republicans do not care if people die, just so they can make money.
Capitalism is about rewarding success, not failure. These execs can take their bonuses, convert them to coins, put those coins in bags and sink to the bottom of oil infested ocean water with their ill-gotten gains weighing them down to the bottom of the Gulf.
@BattleProf53 Supposing that capitalism IS about rewarding success: 1 - Getting paid despite terrible performance is success from their point of view. 2 - If reducing some calculated variable is considered as success by the company policies then they are considered successful by the company. 3 - If they caused a catastrophe which cost the company less than the safety precautions would have then they made the company money, ergo they are considered successful by the company. I could go on.
This literally disgusts me. And the Republican policies are clearly the way to go, because people who make millions of dollars a YEAR and fuck EVERYTHING UP, even KILL people, clearly deserve not just tax cuts, but bonuses. Unreal!!!

This isn't about AIG and the company that ran deep water horizon didn't get government bailout money. I didn't like the AIG payout but Obama allowed it to happen.
@Bellita1 Obama has the right idea, but he's too much of a coward to enforce his policies and keeps caving in to repubs. My point is these guys don't deserve bonuses, especially on grounds of their safety policy. People like the CEO of GM deserve bonuses. He actually used the taxpayers money, and helped his company not only recover, but rebound from low vehicle sales. Now GM is making record profits.
@sidd0123 It isn't the general public's decision to make on who gets bonuses. I agree it is stupid for this company's execs to get bonuses based on a safety record when 11 people died and they spilled millions of gallons of oil but there is nothing the government can do about it.
@Bellita1, Is there anything you guys won't defend? this company ignored regulations to make more profit and in the process killed 11 people and put 200 million gallons of oil in the gulf. Yet these same people want bonuses for SAFETY!!!
@TheDalinkwent This is a company decision and while I do not agree with it, it isn't my business. The company is going to be sued and will have to pay for it's damages.

These oil companys get billions of dollars in subsidies and pay zero taxes, yet I don't hear the GOP hammering them or talking about the wasteful spending, in fact they voted to keep oil subsidies and even make sure oil companys pay LESS in damages when these things happen.
@TheDalinkwent You have a good point. I am a Republican but that doesn't mean I agree with everything they do. I think these oil subsidies should be removed. I think most people are in agreement on many issues, they just won't give in to the other side.

@hughes7520 keyword is environmental disaster. most of chernobyls major effects where isolated to an area near the plant. about 30km radius. The gulf oil spill covered an area of anywhere between 6500 square km to 180000 square kms.
the immediate human cost f chernobyl may have been higher and the idea of a nuclear plant melting down certainly is scarier but it still wasn't as bad.
@sbtech01 Actualy the effect of Chernobyl were felt all over europe. We didn't even find out about Chernobyl until a radiation spike was detected in Sweden. There were culls of irradiated (altho on a very minor scale) cattle and sheep in the northern reaches of europe. Plant and animal life was decimated in the imidiate vicinity (50-100km) and affected on a varying degree as far out as 3000kms.

@hughes7520 I'm aware that effects where felt over a substantial area even ireland got a mild dose of it. I said MAJOR effects where limited to an area of about 30km although I would certainly believe that it was 50 -100km. there was only mild and short term contamination caused beyond those areas. whereas the major damage in the gulf is spread over a far larger area.
I stand to be corrected of course but, with my current info I would agree with cenk.
DeepWater Horizon is probably the biggest failure of Obama.
However, people do not recognize it as such, because they have so bought into the free market message, so they are like "Yeah, but PROVIDING FOR THE FUCKING ENVIRONMENT AND PEOPLES HEALTH is not the job of government, it is the job of the companies. Now, if only we had less regulation, this would not have happened in the first place..."
Rich corporations will get away with polluting the air with millions of tons of pollutants. They will have plenty of money. But one day i'll fart, and I'll be incarcerated as an environmental hazard. I would not have enough money to defend myself and there would be no government to protect me, the regulations having all been cast out, would permit for the company to imprison me indefinitely and make me work for them in order to pay my debt to society and to them. This is tomorrows job market
So, I work in retail, If I don't sell more than 3 items per transaction and keep each sale above $40.00, I will get warned, written up, or fired.
They KILL people, and they pat themselves on the back and give their executives bonuses. WTF is wrong here?
I could be fired if I can't convince somebody to buy 3 shirts, They throw safety regulations to the wind and kill people and they get rewarded. I am just dumbfounded.
this actually goes against thier intent because i'm sure many people will want to expect A LOT more mistakes and this being the least disastrous year,
@MedievalWerewolf you kidding me? If theres another disaster in the Gulf those people will literally be up in arms. You know how many guns those people own and how much they hate the british?
@MedievalWerewolf No even the gulf Republicans would say something. They are beholden to people who are virtually nutjobs and those nuts would hesitate to shoot their congressmen.
@MedievalWerewolf No Steve Scalise(R) from Lousiana, the governors of all gulf state who were all Rs also, Every Democrat, most gulf Repubnlicans especially Mary Landrieu and David Vitter. They all condemned BP now could they have done more? Yeah but well frankly less than 20 people died initially and the oil can always be cleaned up............
@ninetysevenecho "The best rule for dealing with who vs. whom is this: Whenever whom is required, recast the sentence. This keeps a huge section of the hard disk of your mind available for baseball averages." William Saffire
I'm sure if you asked the executives off the record, they wouldn't think it was fair that something like the oil spill disaster should impact their bonuses. I honestly think that's what they think.
Question. Do these oil corporations ever give big bonuses to the workers? You know, the laborers. Pardon me, but since when has an executive done anything besides sit behind a desk!?! I'm probably being prejudice against execs. These days I believe it is warranted though.
@NevermoreJones - Executives do more than sit behind desks. They decide to open new plants where they can produce goods the most cheaply, usually someplace other than an industrialized nation, and close all the plants in industrialized nations, and wonder why their old markets are drying up.
@bobbytiger because they are much much richer and still operate with criminal disregard for the well being of human and the environment?
america is about accountability and rational thinking, not bat shit crazy every man for himself avarice (then again might as well say fuck it screw everyone because by @ 2020 america is done for and will never regain past economic prominence. sad truth). you honestly sympathize with the very forces that screw you everyday? you upper middle class or more?
As unbelievable as it is, this is the new accepted level of discourse in business, politics, news and even interpersonally: truth and reality be damned.
you dont understand cenk, they have to have this year's yacht models or else they wont hope to be able to play with their friends by this summer's yacht competitions. they put in the custom build orders two years ago, so they have to be paid the bonus so they can meet thier obligations or risk purchase banning from yacht makers! thier bonus money will be paid now so that they can have delivery by early may, and they can practice for a few weeks to get ready for the races & Q2 wont be effected.
Cenk misunderstood the definition of the word notwithstanding. It doesn't mean "except for" it means "In spite of." Big difference, but it's a common mistake.
@squirtrocks123 The problem with resuming drilling and NOT investing in CLEAN energy. We as Humans continue to kill God's green earth. If we continue to do what we are doing, several hundred years from now the Earth will be desolate.
Talk about adding insult to injury. First, we need to start bringing criminal charges against these people who have absolutely no remorse and no shame.
Then, we need serious reform of publicly traded corporations. If they want to pull this kind of BS, they can stay private and see how their owners like it.
I think that the government should let these bastards take their bonuses, but tax them at 150% of these bonuses right now. Hey, you want to pollute, kill citizen and make money by notwithstanding security? Well, notwithstanding the fact that we will stole your bonuses, you can have it :P
this OUTRAGES me. like I wanna find them and fuck them up. how about BP give their fucking bonuses to clean-up efforts in the gulf? I mean i'm sure they're barely making ends meat in paying off their private jet payments, but they better find a way to cope.
Offtopic, but seriously about McDonals: go check FatHead, a man on a diet, with purely McDonals food, who stayed perfectly healthy, lowered his bad cholesterol and lost more weight than the standard "calories in, calories out = weightloss/weightgain" rule.
Excellent safety record? Yeah, yeah... It is like saying "at the exception of every cars I crashed, I never crash a car." or "at the exception of every beer I drink, I did not touch a sip of alcohol".
At the exception of one majors gargantuan and gigantically fuck up, they had a C...
Wait until more people start figuring out how little companies like it pay in taxes or the half century of ecological devastation in Nigeria. I didn't realize they had a safety record beyond the Gulf disaster to begin with. Sounds like their safety math is as fuzzy as their tax and subsidies math.
the officials that don't care that safety has not improved know that their government gig is only temporary and they are headed for big industry paychecks afterwards where they will use their pull to corrupt whoever is the official then and repeat the cycle. if the "work in progress" turns into another disaster, the worst case scenario is a congressional hearing on cspan that nobody will watch, a slap on the wrist and a resignation so they can go work for industry sooner with no accountability.
well, nobody really seems to have a problem with all these CEOs making a killing, let them have it, the people will will say when they've had enough of it. Its been a couple thousand years, i'm thinking any day now, sweet revolution anyday now, yup, right aroud the corner, because the people cant take it, yeah they're getting pissed alright, writing their respective congresspeople, letting them know they disapprove, yes they wont stand for this much longer......any day now, any day
@youfallhard Yea, hopefully things will turn violent soon then instead of the standard corporate whitewash they get their heads cut off and the people that take their predeccessors jobs learn the lesson that if they fuck up they will die painfully.
@dffykvn i was more reffering to the people wanting change but expecting obama to do it, which in that case then anything he does is sanctiones because nobody does anything. not trying to make it political but it seemed a good example
@youfallhard The only reason capitalism appeared to be decent in the 50s and 60s was because the rich thought that if they didn't treat the working drones well then the big bad commies would kill them.
Since they no longer have to fear that sword of damocles, they think they can do whatever they want, destroy whatever they want and cheat whoever they want.
I'd like to see things get violent with those people so maybe they'd get scared enough to treat human beings like human beings.
how is it any of cenk's business or concern that a private company wants to pay some executives a bonus?? such payments do not add to the government's deficits and Country's national debt
as for off shore drilling Obowma gave billions to Brazil to enhance their off shore program and he said America was willing buy their oil, which to his gd liberal thinking is better than us using our own oil
@genie0390 when a private oil company like bp or whomever drills for oil on us territory, they don't give it to you. they sell you your own resource at whatever price the world wants to pay for it because they want to maximize their profit. you only think it's "your oil" because it was drilled locally but it has a negligible effect on what you pay at the pump. and "liberal" obama is willing to keep oil subsidies for them going so that those bonuses can be paid without protecting our environment
@genie0390 Because these companies are destroying our natural resources and causing billions of dollars in catastrophic damages, their business practices demand criminal scrutiny. And for all of you who wave the flag of "free market capitalism" as the solution to everything -- paying bonuses to these executives should upset you the most since it rewards failure, not success.
@genie0390 - Worship your all mighty dollar. And enjoy freezing to death if you don't have any. Remember: That's the "voluntary free market." Either you work, or you starve and freeze to death. SLAVE. There's no threat or coercion involved.
You need to follow your logic to it's end. You work or you die. That, of course, is free dumb for you.
1/5 of our ocean is toxic. 1/5. They'll tell you it's clean, they'll tell you it's safe to eat Shrimp from the Gulf Coast. Their next goal? The Atlantic offshore drilling project. Switch to electric cars. It'll take at least 20 years to convert/make 100 million electric cars. Let's start now while we still have oil.
There's no way those execs won't get those bonuses either. They'll get it and nobody will even bat an eye. Everything will just keep rolling on like business as usual.
So How much out of every gallon of gas purchased goes towards their massive profits and bonus'? How much did they overcharge and screw the public to obtain these impressive profits? I want to make a sign to hang on all gas pumps that states how much of the price goes towards bonus'.
Im sorry Cenk but I have to DISAGREE. The Oil spill in the gulf last year was 90% BP's fault while the other 10% is split b/w Transocean and Haliburton...BP was the one who fucked up (they have one of the worst historys for violations/fines)..I dont disagree with the fact they they might fuck up/skip regulations/have violations but you cant blame the incident in the gulf on Transocean. Majoirty was Bps fault
People, people, we need to unite now! We need to put aside our political differences, put aside our political affiliations and realize we're all being screwed over by the rich. While most of us focus on our differences, and focus on corporate news feeding us crap about Charlie Sheen, Lindsay Lohan and pro athletes and other unimportant news, the corporations, the bankers, the oil executives are pickpocketing each and everyone of us to the tune of billions and billions of dollars! Let's unite!

They KILL people, and they pat themselves on the back and give their executives bonuses. WTF is wrong here?
I could be fired if I can't convince somebody to buy 3 shirts, They throw safety regulations to the wind and kill people and they get rewarded. I am just dumbfounded.

Question. Do these oil corporations ever give big bonuses to the workers? You know, the laborers. Pardon me, but since when has an executive done anything besides sit behind a desk!?! I'm probably being prejudice against execs. These days I believe it is warranted though.
NevermoreJones 11 months ago
@NevermoreJones the workers are the ones who earn the bonuses, so they do not get them, that is the logic of corporations.
dmlfan928 11 months ago
@NevermoreJones - Executives do more than sit behind desks. They decide to open new plants where they can produce goods the most cheaply, usually someplace other than an industrialized nation, and close all the plants in industrialized nations, and wonder why their old markets are drying up.

PawnBACM 11 months ago
the officials that don't care that safety has not improved know that their government gig is only temporary and they are headed for big industry paychecks afterwards where they will use their pull to corrupt whoever is the official then and repeat the cycle. if the "work in progress" turns into another disaster, the worst case scenario is a congressional hearing on cspan that nobody will watch, a slap on the wrist and a resignation so they can go work for industry sooner with no accountability.

@dffykvn i was more reffering to the people wanting change but expecting obama to do it, which in that case then anything he does is sanctiones because nobody does anything. not trying to make it political but it seemed a good example
youfallhard 11 months ago
@youfallhard The only reason capitalism appeared to be decent in the 50s and 60s was because the rich thought that if they didn't treat the working drones well then the big bad commies would kill them.
Since they no longer have to fear that sword of damocles, they think they can do whatever they want, destroy whatever they want and cheat whoever they want.
I'd like to see things get violent with those people so maybe they'd get scared enough to treat human beings like human beings.

how is it any of cenk's business or concern that a private company wants to pay some executives a bonus?? such payments do not add to the government's deficits and Country's national debt
as for off shore drilling Obowma gave billions to Brazil to enhance their off shore program and he said America was willing buy their oil, which to his gd liberal thinking is better than us using our own oil
genie0390 11 months ago
@genie0390 when a private oil company like bp or whomever drills for oil on us territory, they don't give it to you. they sell you your own resource at whatever price the world wants to pay for it because they want to maximize their profit. you only think it's "your oil" because it was drilled locally but it has a negligible effect on what you pay at the pump. and "liberal" obama is willing to keep oil subsidies for them going so that those bonuses can be paid without protecting our environment
tyrannosaurusinf14 11 months ago 2
@genie0390 Because these companies are destroying our natural resources and causing billions of dollars in catastrophic damages, their business practices demand criminal scrutiny. And for all of you who wave the flag of "free market capitalism" as the solution to everything -- paying bonuses to these executives should upset you the most since it rewards failure, not success.
Bigwave2003 11 months ago
@genie0390 - Worship your all mighty dollar. And enjoy freezing to death if you don't have any. Remember: That's the "voluntary free market." Either you work, or you starve and freeze to death. SLAVE. There's no threat or coercion involved.
You need to follow your logic to it's end. You work or you die. That, of course, is free dumb for you.
