@Mikester283 Incorrect. Though most of Peart's influence comes from Ayn Rand's the Fountain Head, this story is based on Anthem, which also really influenced Peart. (Hence the album Anthem).

1. 2112--All 7 parts of course. 2. Manhattan Project 3. Red Sector 4. YYZ 5. Cinderella Man 6. A Farewell to Kings 7. Cygnus X-1 8. Twilight Zone 9. Vital Signs 10. Tom Sawyer PS Yes, if I try this again tomorrow, it would probably be a completely different list. Might be easier to just list the songs I don't like. It would look something like this: 1. 0, nada, nil, zilch, niet, none, etc. LoL!
is there anyway i could buy this fucking awsome sync up or even download it in the full version with out the split? I wanna watch i on my tv with surround sound and ganga :)
I always wanted to see an animated film about 2112. Seems a nuclear war sents the world back to the stone age... sorta, so they have rebuilt their lives forbbing evil music! very cool!
The entire 2112 album is amazing. Something for Nothing, A passage to bangkok, Twilight zone, Tears, Lessons, and of course, 2112: Overture/Temples of Syrinx/discovery/presentation/Oracle:the dream/soliloquy/grand finale.
I'd list my favorites, But it's like choosing a favorite child or chevy truck, I just can't do it. If you like only a few RUSH songs, You like those songs. If you can't decide which ones you like best out of their hundreds of songs, Then you truly are a RUSH fanatic. Thats just my 2 cents worth :)
I can pick my favorite chevy truck. Well it's GMC, but it's the next best thing to chevy i guess. But your right Rush is sometimes under-rated, and thats just not right. They have some of they greatest songs ever.
you're wrong acctually. Do me a favor and dig out your 2112 album. Look above were it says overture and it says with ackknowladgment to the genius of Ayn Rand. It was infact based off the book. Ask Niel Peert.
THIS GUY GAVE HIS TOP 10 RUSH SONGS IN HIS OPINION AND DID NOT INCLUDE Xanadu, Freewill, Entre Nous, Natural Science, Analog Kid, Witch Hunt...He does not get Rush
Anyone who likes time stands still as a favorite doeas not get Rush
My favorite songs are Distant Early Warning, Subdivisions, Jacob's Ladder, Cygnus X-1, Cygnus X-1 Book II: Hemispheres, La Villa Strangiato, Xanadu, Farewell To Kings, By-Tor and the Snowdog, The Camera Eye, Witch Hunt, Vital Signs, 2112... Just to name a few....
It is not that this is the best song ever but this is a piece in an intricate puzzle. A chapter in the story that is written in music and flows beautifully
Best Rush Songs Ever (my opinion) 1. Tom Sawyer 2. 2112 3. Limelight 4. Subdivisions 5. Closer to the Heart 6. Time Stand Still 7. Red Barchetta 8. YYZ 9. Fly by Night 10. Spirit of Radio
That it is, I found a website a while ago that lists songs that sync up to films and this was one I had never heard of, then also discovered that it hadnt yet been put on youtube so I put it together myself. This is the first of many I am going to do hopefully
I just want to ask everyone that is watching this video for an opinion on whether or not rush could be considered the most influential progressive rock band? I want to say yes but would like to get a few more opinions and views on it.
i totally agree... like i said earlier, Dream Theater is an amazing band but without Rush to be there to influence them, they would have never even existed.
that was actually the argument i used on my friend cuz him and i would argue who was a better drummer. he would say Portnoy and i would say Peart. after listening to a lot of things i have found out that Portnoy HAS (in my opinion) surpassed Peart, but the thing is, if Peart hadnt been around, Portnoy would be nothing.
The song is based on the book Anthem by Ayn Rand. If you read it then read the lyrics to this song, you will notice that it is almost the same story except for what the 'discovery' is. In Anthem he discovers electricity, and in the song he discovers the guitar.
It really is I mean you still have to give good old Neil some credit for adapting the story into a song, a song which became a legend of progressive rock! If it werent for this song, and a few other early rush songs, I think quite a few people might not have heard of Ayn Rand. True some dont even know that neil was so influenced by her writing but just as many if not more do.
I agree, and I have no idea why I am suddenly commenting on everyone's answers here I guess I am just bored. It should be added though that they are the best modern progressive rock band. Its debatable that they are the best ever but definitely the best prog rock band formed in the past decade
I wouldnt go so far as to say tool was the best progressive rock band of the last decade, I wouldnt say that about any band because it is way too debatable, but they are good. I hate tool personally but I will not deny they are talented
@yyz2112cygnus its true that tool and rush are two entirely different bands. i love both, but rush for me,will always be better than most bands of any genre. rarely has any band gone so far to push the boundaries of music and create something truly wonderful. and yeah,2112 is a masterpiece. thanks for posting:)
ive had the same argument with someone i know it isnt worth it haha rush fans just dont get it and i dont really get rush , i like tool and rush though just tool is amazing but i havent listened to much rush, tool is just easier for me
Dazed & Confused is not progressive rock, so sorry.. D&C is rock.. And has a great solo, I know which one you're talking about the TSRTS.. And I don't like to add 2 or more songs from the same band in the top list, trying to give every band a chance... The End... Hmmm.. Probably a, yes... But is it Progressive... Well it was the beginning of Progressive... I don't know.. Really don't know... Because it really doesn't sound like it... So.. YES! ... Thank you! Thank for reminding of that song too.
I agree with dazed and confused not being progressive rock... but I think it also has to be said the only reason it isnt considered progressive rock is because led zeppelin is one of the bands that defined rock. If it had been done by a band like pink floyd or rush then it would be progressive. And I have to break the 2 or more rule and add cygnus x-1/hemispheres by rush (2 part song) and roundabout from yes. Also long but fantastic songs. Thank you for this list it helped expand my ipod library
however there's one song of Led Zeppelin that is progressive like... Carouselambra by Led Zeppelin, one of their longest songs, and kinda progressive...
Which sounds insulting, almost as if you are saying this song sucks if it isnt live, but I know what you mean. When it comes to rush, that isnt an insult that is simply the only way to truly give someone an idea how amazing they are live if they havent seen them
KICK ASS JOB !!!great video for this classic tune!

La Villa is amazing. I think it was there first instrumental, if i'm not mistaking. And By-Tor fucking rules too. And so is Fountain of Lamneth.
brettdylan0121 2 years ago
Well said. My favourites would have to be:
5)The Fountain of Lamneth
4)La Villa Strangiato
3)Cygnus X1 (duology)
2)Need Some Love (big fan of Rutsey-era rush)
1)Xanadu
True, there are so many people who don't know Rush beyond the songs that were made famous by Rockband or Guitar Hero. Kind of sad, really.
