  • opps, thought this was a belt drive, these look a lot like the last of the belt drives, circa 1985-6?

  • you never had such clean clothes as this...

  • If this machine is being a "shredmore", then it is being used wrong.

  • Agitation looks caffeinated!

  • I had one that did a spin while it was full and had to get a new floor because of it. That Piece of shit went to the dump pile!.

  • @kc5vgw hard to say, sounds like the cam bar busted, easy fix

  • This might be random, but...I had one of these washers (Exactly like this one) until earlier this year. Previously, when entering the spin cycle, it would drain completely before it started spinning. Then last winter, something happened, and it would begin spinning when the drum was still full of water. It would still drain normally, but it just would no longer wait until it was empty before starting to spin. It's been replaced, but just curiosity on my part...what would cause such an oddity?

  • @bigloudnoise There's some kind of solenoid that shifts it from drain to spin. I know if it starts to drain and then the lid id lifted the solenoid trips and it will spin drain. That would be my guess anyway.

  • @hoover1060 when the solenoid is energized the cam bar slides and moves the arm on the pump, sometimes it doesn't snap all the way into pump (on),not closing the flap inside the pump.Usually lint or pins inside the pump.

  • @hoover1060 The lid switch controls power to the wig-wag,when you open the lid it goes dead and the spin cam slides forward and raises the clutch off the drive pulley and engages the brake.

  • @bigloudnoise You're both incorrect, the neutral drain pak located in the transmission works that kind of magic of not needing a solenoid, rather motor direction, and momentary pauses.

After a bit the neurtral drain assembly wears, or the timer advances too quickly, and grabs the spin gear at the wrong time.

The original series 2000 direct drive washer had no neutral drain, a mere spin pawl lever thingus grabbed the spin gear when the motor turned in a clockwise direction.

  • @bigloudnoise The neutral pak in the transmission was wore out.

  • @dualactionsurgilator these washers didn't have neutral transmissions, they use WIG-WAGs to move cam bars back and forth to engage the pump/spin or gears to agitate

  • @nicenonya3 You are confusing a BD design for a DD design. Direct Drive WP machines had no wig wag.

  • @dualactionsurgilator can't tell by looking at the agitator!

  • @bigloudnoiseMy mom had the same washer and it did the exact same thing, then it stopped filling completely. That washer was purchased in 1987 and retired in 2000. She has gone through 4 washers since. They don't make em like they used to that's for sure. Give me an old belt drive Kenmore any day.

  • @bigloudnoise , I think the Kenmores and Whirlpools are designed to spin only after the tub drains, because it's easier on the motor to spin the tub if it's not full of water. However we have a conventional top load Whirlpool and like bigloudnoise says if the lid switch gets tripped during the process, the machine will spin drain, which actually is more effective at extracting more water from the clothes. It's not a big deal, although it doesn't always work as designed, it doesnt break machine

  • @SpazChat Machine will not spin until the pressure switch is turn off(low water),if it's not pumping out before the timer advances, there is a problem in the water flow.

  • @bigloudnoise pump bad,or something in the pump,kinked hose,loose belt,you should have fixed it!

  • Cleanest clothes in the world are from SHREDMORES and the MATCHING 'ALMOST ON FIRE WHEN TAKEN OUT' clothes dryer! True cleaning and disninfection power!

  • I don't understand why your machine is shredding clothes. I have never had a problem with a Direct drive Whirlpool doing that if it is loaded correctly and set on the right cycle for the fabrics being washed. Also some claim the agitation is super fast. This is not completely true. You have to look not only at the number of strokes per minute but the arc of the stroke. Direct drive Whirlpools have a 90 deg. arc while belt drive whirlpools are a 195 deg. arc.

  • Tub Capacity? (cubic feet)

  • @amberlynn6914 3.0 cubic feet I believe...

  • Is that agitator a dual action agitator?

  • @NVHSChadSheppard1 yes, it i dual action

  • probably one of the most useless agitators in a top loader, at least with straight vane, or anything else where its washing the clothes on the top, atleast they are being moved till they get to the bottom, this spiral top agitator does nothing, slides right pass the clothes, more of an allusion than anything

  • Let's go to the dollar store, buy a bunch of clothes and a used 1 speed Whirlpool DD washer, and wash all the clothes! Then, let's see the results of the clothes.

  • ooooo thems some dirty clothes!

  • My 1991 Kenmore convertible has NEVER shredded clothes. What's up with your machine? It's a direct drive, also!

  • btw if you look closely 'normal' on these machines is the slow speed cuz the fast speed is like a cheesegrater to most clothes....these machines are direct drive btw

  • brilliant name....had a 1966 rca whirlpool (lpa980)for 25 years---it fell apart,,,got a used ONE SPEED whirlpool from the late 80s-it really did shred everything---now i have a 4-speed combo maytag from about 1989---greatest washer ever..

  • LOLZ all these statements about "it will shred your clothes" we have this type of kenmore a newer one from around 2000ish and not one or any of my clothes are shredded! then again i know how to properly wash clothes and not buy clothes from the .99 cents store!

  • well yes but now whirlpool makes maytags now

  • Funny, there's no video of the GEshredfile.

  • @paranormaalutrecht

And when the miele has motor failure after a year, guess which washer is actually the worst on your wallet?

  • i remember this kind of washing machine,we use to have one like this.but ours was an almond color and it was duall action.

  • now this brings back memories of my childhood. We had a machine very similar to this one (was a couple models up from this one) from 1991 to 2004 when it finally was dumped from a transmission oil leak and an unhappy-sounding motor.

  • Thats what the slow and extra slow speeds are for, silly.

  • He's not silly. With the slower agitation setting, you don't get the turnover you need or sturdy cotton items. Shredmore is correct.

  • Hi LTS, I wasnt talking to you or your boy Hoover. I was talking to daves farmfan, and backing up ss2day. Our work clothes and cottons clothes do just fine in our DD series 80, and did fine in our belt drive. It aint no calypso

  • Did Whirlpool make Kenmore's in the 70s?

  • yes they did, but the mechanism was very different.

  • @mark40511 , They've always made them, unfortunately now they also make Maytag, Jenn-Air and some KitchenAid items

  • I like the sound of these Kenmores better than the modern ones especially the sound of the drain pump during the drain cycle. Because of the quiet pack one of my favorite sounds from these ones are almost eliminated.

  • yea well it will only shred things depending how you load it and what type of clothing and cycle none of my clothes are worn out!!!!

  • i had one of those exact models, it destroyed anything silk you put in it!!

  • Why call it a "shredmore"?

  • because of how fast it agitates...the back and forth is fast and furious on these machines!!!

  • @tmmaston Yea it shreds the cloths more than washing them!

  • I've often wondered what would happen if one could put a vintage agitator into one of these epileptic new machines - would there be less fabric damage? Would the water move more forcefully? Is it even possible to make such a switch???

  • That just depends on how far vintage you go. Most newer machines oscillate in a very short radius compared to older models. The agitator was usually made to suit that particular transmission. In most cases, an older agitator on a newer transmission would create quite a load for the drivetrain and slightly more wear on the clothes - but that just depends on the model

  • overloaded by just a smidgen, you are going to strip out the transmission if you wash too many heavy loads

  • if you want a center-dial tag, check this beauty out...

  • Kenmore is a made by Whirlpool SEARS contracts through whirlpool give me a model from the 70's ERA would take it they lasted for ever I have seen some 30 yr old Kenmores still running.
