This is one of the best films ever made! There´s history, there´s love/passion/compassion,and Ms.Deneuve at her best!Vincent stole my heart!I saw it in 1994,just once,at the theather, and it really became the unforgettable one!
Typical French instead of addressing their sins of Colonialism and how they bled Vietnam dry they make this movie into a love story and predictable French paternalism. Nonetheless Catherine Deneuve was great in this role and was extermely attractive she repersents what French beauty truly is.
@jordi19957 ,l'Indochine n'est pas française ,l'indochine est vietNamienne, le française venant de l'europe était le voleur de terre du vietnamien ,
Indochina is not french, the french stole the vietnamese's land at he end of the 19th century,so they are thieves in this civilized world, they are all criminal because they killed many vietnamese patriot, civilian innocents... during their occupation
@joe101394 I am sorry, I use Google Traductor so speak French, at now I see be not function. I agree with you, in Spain also lead to bad in times of Napoleon.
@Remorselesslymine its not that its anti-white. france, along with england, spain, holland, portugal, etc., all attempted to colonize all the "undiscovered" lands. but when a country like vietnam was exploited, the stories of what happened must be told. this film actually shows that some people cared about the exploitation, such as the main actor fighting back against the other french guys. although the story is still very eurocentric, so im not sure what youre complaining about.
@autriii I should have been more specific - this movie is anti-white because it glamorizes interracial romance. Right now, Whites comprises ~8% of the world population, down from ~30% in the early 1900s. Due to traitorous, uncaring politicians & intellectuals, non-white immigration is pouring ceaselessly into all White countries.
@Remorselesslymine but if you go back to around that time period, you'll notice all the european countries were colonizing africa, SE Asia, and other places. the european colonizers specifically mandated that women, older men, and anyone other than young, single european men go to those places and take concubines. so they bred with women of those places, exploited their posistions and vulnerability, but refused to grant them citizenship or take in their children. later, the politiians decided
@Remorselesslymine that indigenous races were inferior so THEN they said no mixing. but by then it was pretty much too late. try reading an article by Ann L. Stoler called "Making Empire Respectable: the politics of race and sexual morality in 20th-century colonial cultures". it mostly focuses on women and their role in colonial history, but its an interesting read, and based on your profile, i think it might give you a different perspective on some of the issues you think about. im happy
@Remorselesslymine To quote one of my favorite lines, "Just what are the great historical accomplishments of your race that make you proud to be white? Capitalism? Slavery? Genocide? Sitcoms?"
Long story short, I think you would have a hard time justifying any basis in in preventing the "mixing of the races" other than absolute bigotry. But if you want to try, be my guest. Just don't forget that Jesus was Jewish.
@autriii Continued - Combine that with the fact that most White nations have below-replacement level birth rates, & it should be clear that population experts knew what they were saying when they predicted that Whites will be minorities in every previously-White country, even European ones, by 2042.
Promoting miscegenation to a dying, betrayed race shows abysmal moral fiber.
One of my all time favorite movies, I can't count how many times have I seen this movie. Love Deneuve, one of her best roles ever! an epic all the way, amazingly beautiful movie
The only way to appreciate this film as the absolutely best film ever made, one would have to know the entire history of Vietnam. It was indecent to say that "before Vietnam was a nation, there was Indochine." The French colonized Vietnam and drained the country and people of everything - just as the Chinese had tried to do for centuries. The people of Vietnam are used to fighting - it has never been otherwise. Catherine Deneuve is fabulous in any role, but this is her best!
I was so fortunate to watch this movie last week, while spending the night on a "wreck" in Halong Bay. As we watched the film we would look outside the cabin and see the same scenes as on the screen. A great film and an unforgettable night
@fshalan i can only imagine and I envy you a lot :-) thanx for sharing, I love this amazing movie and I plan to go to Halong Bay and see the countryside one day soon

This is the worst movie I have watched in my life. Ever. And I have watched movies from all over the world. I have never seen a movie like this. Usually when u watch a movie there is at least ONE character u can sympathize with whether its a bad or good person. What character was that in the movie? They are all despicable people. Yeah the scenery is nice but the characters and the story line just kills it. I wanna meet the guy who wrote the story and have a long talk with him.
It had won four Academy Césars (the French Oscars or the French Goyas for you) including Best leading Actress for Catherine Deneuve and Best supporting actress for Dominique Blanc.
It's a movie whose the French cinema is proud : emotion, adventure, and amazing pictures and music.... behind a sad story about love and destruction.
Yes, it was nominated for the best foreign language film Oscar and Catherine Deneuve as best actress in a leading role. It won the first one (and for me, Catherine won, too ;-)).
