the poetry of baseball............a comedy .....a tragedy .
I think there might have been one more title run in both 80 and 81 had Munson not perished in that plane crash. You could tell the Yankees missed Munson's bat in '80 vs the Royals in the ALCS and '81 vs the Dodgers in the WS. As much as Reggie got the attention for being Mr. October, it was really Munson that was clutch each time in the post-season.
I remember when my mom told me that he died. She knew how much I loved the Yankees. I was 9 y.o., & I just came home for dinner after hanging out in front of our house with some friends that evening. I thought she had said "Herman Munster died," (she really had no idea who Thurman was). Then I saw the news on Channel 11 around 7 o'clock and realized it was Thurman. I was so sad.
He would probably been paralyzed had he lived, his neck was broken. So maybe it was better that he had passed away then be paralyzed for the rest of his life.
when i find your punk ass you are now look over your back and see that bat coming off with your head may hiv cancer come your way slow you fucking cunt
Why the hell is everybody from baseball's golden age automatically considered gay? Answer me that! Babe Ruth hit 714 home runs during his career. "Oh, he is gay!!" This is an example of abhorent figures of society calling people they envy names they wish they had the balls to be? Let me clear this up for those of you who are classified as "reprehensible losers of the general public":
NOBODY FROM 1940's , 50s, 60s, 70s or 80s shall not be considered gay unless proven by prees or individual! It'
Thurman Munson wasn't gay. He was so far from gay in both his lifestyle & masculinity that if such an award had existed in High School he would've been voted the student least likely to wind up with a cock in his mouth. Munson was gay!! Who the fuck are these people making these comments. The gays have been trying to label some classic people from the past as possible bi-sexuals, like Clark Gable, James Dean and others. I guess these fags need to have that illusion that all great men were gay.
@glueforall I agree deeply. These guys who call this great man a bisexual should be falcon punched really hard. Why do they throw these insults at a man of good will, good intentions, and dignity who is currently resting in sweet peace. Thurman, why dud you suffer? RIP, please RIP.
Going from a piston twin to a Citation is very hazardous for most pilots. Sometimes having a lot of confidence can lead you into a place you don't want to go. Sad. These planes have tons of power but when on approach, if you're short it takes the engines longer to spool up that a piston driven plane, especially if you're dirty (gear down, flaps down) hence you have less wiggle-room.
@downhill240 He didn't have the flaps down...one of 17mistakes he made on appch. He wasn't even supposed to be flying without his instructor. Shame, Money can buy a lot of things, but it can't buy experience.
This is so deja vu. I live in Canton, Ohio and was working near the airport the night it happened. Looking at the family photos is so strange. For the past 3 or 4 years I have become close friends with his widow and family.
This is going to sound overly sentimental & it's not the right forum I guess, but I've thought often about the pain Diane Munson went through after Thurman's death & it's so lovely that her & Thurman were teenage sweethearts who seemed to know they were meant for one another at a young age. I've seen & read many interviews with her and it's so apparent that she is a great human being with traditional family values & solid morals. Sadly, people like her & Thurman are becoming more & more rare.
I forget who said it (I think it was Nettles), but somebody close to the Yankees said of Munson, "He claims to be moody. Munson's not moody, he's just mean. When you're moody, at least you're occasionally happy."
Very well done. Great story guys. And to the weirdos spouting off about gay this and gay that...check your own manhood. Those who fire off about it are usually suspect.
Not to mention these comments have no place on here. You guys are a class act to disgrace this section with your vile and juvenile comments. Shame on you.
@glueforall Reggie Jackson said that Thurman Munson was a born again bisexual whose boyfriends were Dick Pole and John Ellis which is why he hated playing for the Yankees..Are you prejudiced against bisexual men>?
My brother-in-law drove me past that spot when we were going to the NFL Hall of Fame in Canton. While there are no memorials, people still drive by and point. When the narrator said Munson's neck was broken, I think it's safe to say even had Munson survived, he'd have ended up like Roy Campanella, Christopher Reeve, or worse. He might not have survived beyond getting to the hospital.
@zazozung You are a fucking moron and a complete asshole. The fact that people like you continue to live and take up air and space on this planet that would better be reserved for normal people is a fucking shame. Go fuck yourself you piece of shit loser.
@zazozung WoW! What an intelligent response, just about what I expected from such an obvious intellect. Not only r u a fucking jackass, but u r a pussy too. I'd like to see what u look like now, let alone after having the courage to raise three children on your own after your spouse dies at 32. Your parents must be completely ashamed of you.
@zazozung - You are a lowlife piece of garbage. She is one of the most beautiful people I have ever met - both inside and out! People like you who spew hatred via the internet because you can not be confronted make me sick to my stomach. I would pray that God have mercy on your soul, but you obviously do not have one.
@faffaflunkie Reggie Jackson joined the New York Yankees in 1977 because all of his homosexual butt buddys from Oakland like Catfish Hunter,Kenny Holtzman, etc were in New York and they were all too familiar with where Reggie Jacksons "G spot" was located deep in his Anus.In fact Elston Howard said that Dave Kingman was able to get his 13 inch dick in Reggies ass when they were teammates in 1977 and Billy martin was envious.
@faffaflunkie Only Blue Moon Odom had a bigger cock than King Kong Kingman.Bill North said he had to damn near kill Reggie Jackson because Reggie would jump in the shower and urninate on his feet and attempt to show him the buttphuck technique taught to him by "Dick" Williams.
My childhood favorite. Cried like hell when he died, Just finished reading the Marty Appel book Life & Death of a yankee Captain. This interview was in there. Fuckin sucks he gone and will never be in the Hall cause his career was too short.
@koshernostra421 you amust be as miserable a prick as Thurman Munson was.Munson was a grumpy, jealous fat little balding man who was envious of Carlton Fisk, jealous of Reggie Jackson and took it out on the baseball fans who helped to make him live a wealthy life playing a kids game.Does the fact he died "tragically" playing Charles Lindbergh diminish the fact that he was a first class ass???I THINK NOT!!!
@yomamakunt You are a complete moron, with the compassion of the bubonic plague. Thurman was a friend of the family, and was a warm, giving and friendly person to people who did not "want" or were trying to "take" from him all of the time. He treated people the way he was treated by them. So if you ever would have had the chance to meet him I guess he WOULD have probably treated you like a piece of crap.
@yomamakunt Thurman Munson has comparable offensive stats to HOF Kirby Puckett. mUnson is one of the best defensive catchers in the history of the game. Thurman Munson should be int he baseball HOF. He was ROY, MVP and played in a couple of world series's. Munson was not arrogant, and he wasnt fan friendly because he was very shy. He rarely spent time with his teammates he was a family man and loved spending time with his family.
@21MarkakisFan. Kirby had only 2, 400 hits as well as over 200 homers. Thurman had only 1500 hits and 100 homers. Munson was great on defense and calling a great game. But he needed great players around him that is when George Steinbrenner came. Kirby had nobody and won in Minnesota. Where nobody wins. The Yankee who should be there is Graig Nettles and he had better stats than Brooks Robinson.
