    Brazil.

  • I wonder if Jo still performs the Queen

  • Streich forever

  • Right away, I could tell the difference. She's way better.

  • Aren't humans the most amazing creatures! When they play with the talents they have they are so creative and push them to the limits - whether it is for sports and physical limits, creative and artistic limits, adrenalin rush limits, handicapped limits - they push and push and live life to the fullest with all the emotional roller coaster involved from the greatest of heights to the most horrific of depths. I applaud all efforts and failures and give credit to those that try.

  • she's one of the most underrated soprano's of our time if you ask me

  • I wonder who is the Pamina in this production?

  • she hits those notes effortlessly!!!! :O not to be bashing anyone, but i like sumi jo and natalie dessay waaaaay better than diana damrau.....

  • incredible pitching

  • THIS IS SO AMAZING. pity for a bad quality?

but the sound is good :) thsnks for posting!D

  • I love Sumi Jo in this role. Vocally & musically, she's as good as it gets, IMHO. Dramatically, definitely a little scary (although she's still adorable). None of the over acting you see with certain other singers who I won't name.

  • asians are gifted singers.

  • wow, I can't believe such flawless notes can come out of a human voice!!

  • maybe they thought that aria was over which is....

  • 1) Diana Damrau

    2) Edda Moser

    3) Sumi Jo

  • I'm still wishing that Sumi Jo will teach me some day ! :D

  • seems like good art direction. wish the quality was better

  • She's dang good!

Aren't those fast staccato notes harmful on the voice?

  • @Jouwl if you sing wrongly..

  • Wonderfully done! :)

  • Sumi Jo herself says this piece is a bit over the top for her. However, can Sumi do anything wrong? Of course not. Anything her voice touches turns to gold.

  • Love her version of the "Alle Bande" sequence. Such smooth and connect triplets! The larger voices who have attempted this role can't quite get that one part right. Although Sumi Jo doesn't have the biggest voice in the world, her portrayal her is nonetheless effective because she sings it with a great deal of expressiveness.

  • Wahnsinn!

  • i love her in this roll but she doesnt portray the part like damrau

  • @rico2008 that's exactly what I dislike in sumi jo: she is technically great, but as far as a performing "theater" goes she is not so good. in such an emotional part she just stands there sings her thang, dramatically points at her daughter and storms out in not such a stormy way...

  • @jplcoelho look at Leontyne Price...she isn't known for her acting, she is known for her wonderful vocal abilities...many great opera singers aren't known for their acting but for their vocal ability, if you want an actor watch movies

  • @sweetaztecangel69 I ust think that's diminishing a lot what an opera singer may be able to do. I understand your point bue opera is a form of singing theater, and the theater part just doesnt show up in sumi jo

  • @jplcoelho opera has never really been in the physical acting....that was never its intended plan....

  • @sweetaztecangel69 if you want both a great actress and a great singer watch Damrau

  • Comment removed

  • @zajobbojaz no although Damrau's acting and singing are good. but her acting often makes her singing unstable. her fioritura, fluidity are not so great. so she conpensates it with acting(somewhat like Beautiful Russian Anna). so her queen of night may be fantastic(especially acting). but her ordinary belcanto roles like Lucia are just.....(so so) i like Damrau too. but i don't think she's a perfect role model of opera singing.

  • @zajobbojaz i think Damrau has great and beautiful lyrico voice. ;)

  • @jplcoelho emotionally,, she is great. in case u did not notice... she has the feeling but roles like this don't suit her cause her voice is very bright and not dark which is needed for this kind of songs..

  • Lucia Popp...

  • who is this ? brilliant

  • i think diana is better

  • Agree with most of the comments. Sumi Jo is my favorite for singing this aria, because she is technically awesome, but to achieve that she has to sacrifice acting and some diction... plus she makes it sound beautiful and when really she's supposed to be pissed off. I love her voice though.

  • @dlh975 Yeah, she does make it sound beautiful. Technically it's wonderful singing. For this aria, she's supposed to sound more than "pissed off," though. She's telling her daughter to go out and commit murder. She should sound rabid. Maybe the director told her to keep a lid on it or something. Too bad!

  • Interesting take on the subject....

  • Not enough conviction, but great singing! Better than Diana in most aspects.

  • I'm not a fan of Sumi Jo in this role - - she sings beautifully, but seemed to be concentrating more on the audience than on Pamina. In my opinion, Diana Damrau is the best Queen of the Night on the stage!

  • sumi jo is great, but a bit expressless than diana damrau.. but both of them are great!!

  • Oh God, this music, this voice. I adore this. Brilliant, just brilliant.

  • 돌고래 돌고래 dolpin!!! sound of dolpin!

  • Comment removed

  • Diana Damrau is the best!!!

  • Diana Damrau is better.

  • Very nice =D! , I think she has a great voice.. but i think this version sounds a bit much better as well -> w ww.dondalska.de/videos-es.html

  • its not that good

  • perfect singing but lacks affection

  • Sumi Jo and Lucia Popp and Rita Streich and Edda Moser are the best Queen's of the Night! They are brilliant, and the music is so exciting! Looooooove.

  • Omg, her mouth is atrocious during the high runs....its moving all over the place, and the bit at 2:27 sounds like she is chopping vegetables.

  • @anneayer Conventional vocal technique would say that the mouth movement is not a good thing. However, I've seen about 20 or so sopranos do this role and none of them have a stationary mouth like the real bel canto sopranos like mirella freni for example. It must be something about the tessitura of the piece that makes it difficult to not move one's mouth for placement. Kathleen Battle does the same thing. It's very strange but I love this rendering of the piece.

  • @dennisdeemii The staccato in this aria is so difficult, and your mouth is going to want to exaggerate movements in order to force notes out, and I am being taught that this isn't good technique. Her mouth spreads to the sides, instead of keeping it rounded, her body is shaking starting at 2:19, isn't the point to make it look effortless? I also prefer a dramatic coloratura in this, it just fits the role. And she isn't nearly angry enough, but she does have a very nice high and light voice.

  • @anneayer do you know why she makes those mouth shapes?? it is a technique to use for singing that f, for those womans who keep rounding their mouth, their f is squeaky. sumi, her f is clear as water .. look at diana, people says she is superb, but f is terrible

  • @dennisdeemii Watch Natalie Dessay perform this, specifically the second link when you search for her. If you notice, her jaw just opens completely, and her upper lip is the only thing that moves, it's what I call "the bunny teeth" Diana Damrau does it too, but she tends to keep her mouth more rounded. I observed Sumi Jo spreading her mouth horizontally, and that effects the vowel and the pureness of the sound that is necessary for this role, but perhaps I am just being over critical.

  • @anneayer agreed...I also think Diana's voice has more depth and you can feel the conviction she has when singing this role...I still think Sumi Jo is fantastic though :]

  • @anneayer agreed. she said in a tv show, she practiced her shape of her mouth when she makes singing for f so hard that when she wakes up from sleep, she start practising that mouth shape. and she said that technique helps in singing clear f and not sqeuaky. only woman that does that mouth shape. she said the mouth shape is ugly but no choice..

  • @anneayer it is technique asshole she even explained why she does her mouth movements that is why her f is the best in the world

  • @sumimimi0 Cursing, and insulting me doesn't convince me that she's any better.

  • ahahaha the audience .. clap clap clap ahahahaha xD

  • they thought the performance was over i think. anyways she is the best singer in this song, karajan said so people who bad mouth her, shut up.

  • I would actually like to hear (and see) Callas doing Der Holle Rache

  • Edda Moser!

  • WHOA, they applauded right there!? I wouldn't know whether to be flattered or upset...

  • It's rather:

    1)Gruberova

    2)Damrau

    3)Sumi Jo

  • No, audience. You do not clap -__- I was enjoying this so much and then they applaud and completely ruins the mood! This ist nicht a concert!

    What perfect notes though!

  • Wow - I really hate that she didn't enjoy doing this role: she's brilliant at it.

  • 1:14 i love that shit

  • She has a great vibrato. And she hits all the notes perfectly. I don't personally like diana. Her voice is HARSH.

  • Wow, Sumi Jo is the absolute for this role.

  • Brilliant!!

  • Was this community theater or something? What opera audience wouldn't know better than to applaud in the middle of this aria. Gauche.

  • @Porn05Mouth i would be a little upset

  • @Porn05Mouth wondering if you've ever been to the theater...."Porn05mouth". hmm

  • @thinkhard29 I've been to the theater a couple of times. ;-)

  • @Porn05Mouth

    jews...

  • @Porn05Mouth They applaud in hope..............that she wouldn't return to finish the aria!!!

  • Fine voice, but it's clear that she can't carry the aria.

Not enough power, musicality, interpretation or range!!!

  • @franzgrabe1 she can sing the f with ease however. she is not suitable as she is famous for being light and soft and delicate... she is not like those fierce one.

  • @Porn05Mouth I know what you mean . . . on the other hand, when such things happen, I like to think that was what opera was once like -- audiences expressing their excitement.

  • High notes actually sound like whistle register.

  • Why no comparison to Lucia Popp? She did things at a tempo that is much more pleasing than the rush most conductors seem to like.

  • Wow, she sounds beautifully and hits all the notes, but she needs to learn how to be a little more articulate. But honestly, I'm more interested in the staging and costume choices. And, on the side, what barbarian appluds at the Opera before it is done. At least let her finish the aria, let alone the Act.

  • In this role:

    1) Sumi Jo

    2) Diana Damrau

    3) Luciana Serra

  • I agree with you.

At least, her coloratura is the best.

  • ah? and what about Anderson??

    June sounds amazing.

  • @WinstonSmith1980 Sir you missed to put Damrau first :)

  • @WinstonSmith1980 Did you forget Edda Moser's epic performance?

  • Comment removed

  • @WinstonSmith1980 There must be one four as well, Natalie Dessay ;)

  • @WinstonSmith1980 I agree, if you look at the singing... if you take acting into account, Diana wins easily :)

  • @ethalinia still, her singing is better than diana in most of the songs, maybe this song not cause she is not fierce enough. however, i bet everyone agrees her f is the best. climbs with ease. however, diana squeaks

  • @WinstonSmith1980 Agreed based on sound, but I think that Diana Damrau upstages Sumi in the visual. Sumi sounds AMAZING but she makes it look like work. Diana makes it look relatively effortless, or at least hides the effort in her acting. Both are beautiful though.

  • Diana Damrau is no compare to her super crisp clear high notes

  • very bad acting which was not her fault. so people, her bad acting is not her bad acting. it is from her conductor!! why did that conductor instructed her to do that??

  • nobody does this aria better than her. especially for f. nobody can even come close to her standard.

  • Doch Diana Damrau is noch n bisschen besser! lol

  • Beautiful voice, clear and warm at the same time. Expressive as well. You even understand the words. Pity the director didn't ask her to act at all. She must have suffered ans been hurt when those cretins applauded a little bit too early. She didn' t seem to be affected though. Sumi and Damrau are the best. Damrau was given the opportunity to act, and she performed wonderfully : " D. D. Der hölle Rache " by Trisolde .

  • such a disgrace when people applaud in the middle of an aria...oh the ignorance.

  • amen

  • Sumi Jo is amazing

  • Again. Why does she turn away from her daughter when she starts singing??? Sad really. The director is mostly to blame.

  • Those are some stunning, spinning high Fs. It's hard to chose between Sumi Jo and Lucia Popp vocally. No deed to, thankfully. Both splendid, superb artists.

  • brilliant, she was excellent at it

  • Comment removed

  • because it's opera ?

  • yeah, but opera is not only about singing, its about acting too right? so wudnt it be more convincing if she sung towards her daughter?

  • After hearing that, being able to say such profanity only underlines your worthlessness. Qqthx.

  • dont misunderstand and more importantly dont insult others....I never said Sumi isnt a good singer, she is my 2nd favourite amongst EVERY single opera singer ive heard and I adore her.....I just made a notice about her acting method....you must be quite immature to insult someone just for that huh? Seems you are the worthless one....

  • quality sucks but yeah she is a good opera singer

she def has soul and she understands music

  • you bet she does! she's been studyin music for over 30 years!

  • especially f. but the quality is bad!

  • nice video. the comment below, in case anyone things I am being harsh is a reply to the comment below it.

the quality is a bit poor, but that's ok, the singing isn't affected, and that's the important thing.

what would be really amazing is if a boy or girl could do it without going flat at all. Robin Schlotz in the related videos is good, but he's flat sometimes. Is there actually any kid who's been able to do it without going flat?

  • she's amazing!

in response to stad97 (i'm kind of late i know) i can kind of understand why there are no videos of kids singing this, i'm sixteen and i'm singing this in my opera class- i've been studying music for years and i've had proper opera training, but my instructor still can't let me sing this in the proper key. your voice doesn't fully devolop until sometime in your twenties; for a difficult piece like this, you can seriously damage your voice. it would be stupid to have a kid sing it

  • i know. but once or twice won't harm. and i was just saying it wouldbe more amazing. i wouldn't actually ask a kid to sing it though.

  • the quality is just bad.

  • I'm not a person who studies music. But i think i should say i cannot find out any defects. Perfect!

  • Perfect!.

  • That's why i prefer luciana Serra Version

  • Well pdomett, Diana Damrau is for me the BEST of them all, click her here at the right , she is Magnificent.

  • I have seen her video and i think she is great too so i have the video on my page here. I just like the way Luciana plays.

  • totally

  • sarastro isnt her dad, the queens husband paminas dad, handed the kingdom to sarastro and the freemasons, because the queen is evil...

  • No way...no feelings, where is the Anger? Emotions??? The dialogue with the orchestra doesn't have the pianíssimos at minute 2.22??, too FAST, the faster the easier it gets to sing, nop, just ok. only mezzo forte and fortíssimo.

  • Perfect!. It's a breathtaking performance. She is just amazing following the complex stacatto.

Two arias are performed on Die Zauberflote by the evil-doer mother. Oustanding pair in the operatic repertoire, for the centuries to come!.

Why - I never understood - the Teophilus musician exalted the evil-do with passionate sung?. I think the maestro had a very acid sense of humor!.

  • Sumi Jo is phenomenal of course, with a 5-star rating most definitely. However, I still enjoy the 1964 performance by Lucia Popp the most. Popp is the definitive performance.

  • it sucks!!!!

The best of ALL is DIANA DAMRAU!

  • acitipo, why does it matter what nationality she is? expand your horizons and intellect, and throw out your bigotry hat please.

  • I sugest the Luciana Serra version. I think is the best one

  • i like hers as well. Jo is good in this aria though. its not a very loud aria so even though consider it dramatic coloratura it suits her quite well

  • Sumi Jo actually says in an interview that she doesn't particularly like this role. She might just not be able to identify herself with the role and that's why she sings it half-hearted. My favourite performer is aswell Diana Damrau. She's great as the Queen though in some other roles she overdoes the acting a little bit. But still she's great!

  • She needs a real coach. This is not how Mozart would have liked it performed. Why? Because she is like a robot, she hits the notes and the job is done, supposedly... Well, also the legato in the triplets is not as good as it could be. I would agree with those who recommend, for this aria, Lucia Popp.

  • I completely agree. I think my favourite will always be Diana Damrau.

  • I couldn't agree more!

I listened to a few performers of this aria and Diana gave it the best theatrical performance.

She doesn't only sing, she also acts as the Queen of the night.

  • Dont take this the wrong way... but the highlight for me was when she exited (3:05 till the end). That look she gave Pamina, the throwing of the hand and that walk off stage....LOVE IT!

  • Wow, I thought you guys were merely joking. She actually turns toward the audience. Acting needs much work, although her voice is quite lovely. Instead of singing to Pamina she decides to go for the solo act. Has no one taught this woman that you only directly sing to the audience to when preforming a solo?

  • you do realise that operas are directed?

  • I hate the fact she is singing towards the audience. Her voice is great, her acting sucks. She is singing to Pamina, not the audience. Diana Damrau is the only person who i've seen, that can sing this song in FULL complete character, and still sing brilliantly. Sorry Sumi, fail.

  • I totally agree

  • the act of turning back is her chereographer. what you think? you think she is so stupid to do that? if her chereographer didn't ask her to do his, she wouldn't do that and the audience are not stupid. pehaps she sang to well thats why the audience clapped

  • damrau is not so famous as sumi and sumi won more famous and great prizes than damrau. damrau's acting and siging is good but her f can hardly reach it while sumi does it so well. haven't you heard what karajan said? there are only 3 people who can sing this and sumi is one of them. even the expert said that. so what can you say? than why damrau did not win the 1st internationl puccini award? damrau is better in acting than sumi but sumi sings better thn damrau.

  • damrau is far better than sumi jo...

damrau sing better than sumi and damrau's timbre is far better than sumi...

perhaps you sides sumi because you're a korean not a german...

and besides damrau pronounces the words far better than sumi jo who can't pronounce german words very well....

  • Damrau is better, please..

  • Faire des comparatifs.... Pourquoi???

  • OMG Sumi Jo Best aria

  • There's good singing and then there's bad singing where the woman can't even hit a high note. She accomplishes the aria and more importantly, manages the character. In any play, especially in a libretto such as this, a woman can easily lose character while singing if she isn't careful. This woman accomplishes the character and even I can tell she's serious about her vengeance on Sarastro. She seems cold during the aria because this Queen has one thing on her mind, Sarastro's death.

  • she has won the the 1st international puccini priz for opera singers which is given only best operasingers. . this shows that she is the best soprano in the world. in fact, pavarotti also has this prize.

  • it doesn't make her the best soprano in the world, it just shows that she's an accomplished musician and singer. there are many sopranos with better technique and over all ability

  • How dare you say some one is the best singer in the world!!

No one holds that title. Some are great actors, some other are great singers, some have great sensibility, some other flawless technique; there's just too much to consider.

There's no best soprano because there's always someone who does something better that she!

  • Perfectly sung, even if I feel her voice is a little cold (just a very personal idea I got from listening at this, as I did not know her at all, might as well be an absolutely wrong impression).

The crowd though... OMG what a bunch of ignorant apes... Applauding in the middle of the aria??? Gives me the chills; I hardly can't stand those who do not let the orchestra finish playing at the end of a show... these kind of people really make my skin itch...
