i have wanted one for like 2 years honestly i am dying for one we already had our house checked it is perfect size for them ya you need to have your house checked first and it has to meet certain standards but I LOVE THEM THEIR SOO SWEET
ye gods!!! with that kind of appetite, it'd be cheaper to feed them raw meat and bone, not commercial dog food! i was feeding my border collie commercial kibble and it ran me $135/mo + - for the past two years, i've been feeding him from the discount bin at the grocery store (same meat the family eats) and it costs me around $100/mo except during hunting season when it's free.
@StrawberryMooses they don't - the problem with all the giant breeds is that even though they are giant sized on the outside, the internal organs are not a lot bigger than that of an average sized dog. one thing that can be done to extend their lifespan is NOT to spay or neuter - coring out the endocrine system has been proven to cause serious health problems that shorten their life.
@threenorns3 oh thank you. i really do hope to have one of these amazing dogs, and i'll be sure not to spay/neuter. i just want the longest happiest life for them. i'm still so excited i may be getting one soon!
@TeadTheBag no - for the last century plus, they have been bred for patience, tolerance, and a gentle demeanor. that's not to say you wouldn't find one that's still got some of the ancestral fire in him but he would require immensely expert handling.
i really need some advice; what small lap dog breed is like the best to get? we are looking at cavaliers but should we be scarred for heart diseases? it would mean a lot if any one might have small dogs and could give my some advice, thx :)
@BeastifyMeBaby your best bet is to go by the dog, not by the breed. just because a dog's a border collie doesn't mean he's going to automatically be frighteningly smart - there are lunkheaded BCs out - and just because a dog is a lab doesn't automatically make him the perfect hunting dog. if you have no experience with dogs, do NOT start with a puppy - it's not fair to the pup as he will live his life with the marks of your inexperience. go to a shelter instead.
You know you've done both a great and terrible thing when the dog you've created basically worked itself into near extinction. To the great breeder, Ivar Odgarson, Olaf the pink, whomever it be, thank you for giving us such an imposing, majestic and amazing hound.
Why do I want to see an ad for a stupid cat when I am looking at the Irish Wolfhound and other big dogs? I hate cats especially when I'm watching my favorite dogs...UgggHHH!!
they are protective, ive had them all my life,i had a male called gandolf when i was about 9 and when i took him out for walks everyone would stop to ask about him and he would always stand between me and them and if they got too close he made it crystal clear and people got the message real quick, but he didnt get like that when my dad walked him, so he knew what he was doing, very inteligant very loyal
I had a dog that was half Irish wolfhound and half airedale terrier. Looked mostly like a small wolhound and she was a stray. She lived 13 years but we fed her raw beef cubes and not processed dog food. Would love to get a purebreed.
These things look even more impressive in real life. I used to always see a man walking two of them down the street, it was unbelievable how big they were!
My Irish Wolfhound, Connell, is the sweetest puppy in the world. Of course, he's not a "puppy" anymore....he's almost 7 years old which, by Wolfhound standards, is, like, 80. XD
@MsSmokingCaterpillar Consider switching him to gentle giants dog food and feed him several times a day and hey may live a whole lot longer. You want to make sure you're feeding him in raised food and water containers, but you're probably doing that already, right?
Those people calling FastRockStar a liar, you're wrong any dog can live to any life span if they're treated well, 6 is just an average. I had a mutt once, she was eighteen and a half and she was blind and partially deaf but we put her down cause she was diagnosed with stomach cancer.
In my old neighborhood There was a man with a Irish wolf hound. The funny thing was he looked like his dog :D He had gray scraggly wirey hair and way tall and kinda lanky haha ;)
@Celestica72 Any common diseases among them, or was it just a general advise regarding upbringing? I have to ask since I cannot see the video anymore.
Yeah,Im a Dobe lover since age 13,BUT I did work @ an Irish Wolfhound breeder. The Wolfhound is,such a wonderous beast, the, lifespan is the only part I couldnt deal with emotionally. All of you Wolfhound owners are so lucky n blessed,so are your children,to have these beautiful gentle giants as part of your family.Love dearly while you have them.Long live the Irish Wolfhound!
