does anyone know if there is a fingering chart for what Matt Malloy does? He uses his fingers for articulation instead of his tongue. I recently bought an irish flute but I only know the traditional method of articulating on the flute.
Actually finger ornamentation is the traditional method of playing the Irish flute, not tongueing. The tongue is not really used for ornamentation at all on the instrument.
Don't have any charts, but check out the book by Grey Larsen "The Essential Guide to Irish Flute and Tin Whistle" if you want a damn fine resource. 400 page book focusing heavily on ornamentation
It's an Irish flute. It's made of African Blackwood and is used in traditional music. It has 6 holes and can have up to 8 keyes for chromatic notes. This is known as the simple system flute and was used in orchestras before the Bhoem system flute replaced it.
they can have no keys, three, five or eight (for notes such as f natural (most wooden flutes are in the key of D), low c, c# etc) There are also wooden boehm system flutes too. (just like the regular ones except the body of the flute is made from wood)
So short?

Reviewed comments. Nobody mentioned That Matt was probably playing an Olwell flute, which he plays now.

This video is from 1987 so Molloy was probably still playing his Boosey Pratten.

Matt Molloy and many other traditional flute players use throat for articulation instead of tongue.
