I understand that the sand is hydrophobic, but I am curious if has more to do with matric potential. I think it is obvious that H-bonding is why this happens, but the sand looks fine enough that the water should have some attraction to it.

I wish I knew more about these things, but I think the reason for this is actually because of H-bonds--the H2O molecules have a stronger attraction for each other than they do the sand.

Similarly hydrophobic soils happen after intense forest fires.

You do know that this kinda sand is like... Not healthy? The sands particles is smaller that water.

When you sweat the H2O is leaving your body trough your skin - because it can. Now if this sand has smaller particles than the water that can pass through too.

Guess what - that is what it do! D: You might see thouse "NanoCover" thingys that you can treat your furniture in, so that water and soda will reject off - its the same thing. Exept that this is just in sandform :-/
