I think he did a great job. He is one of the few umps that calls a high pitch a strike. The zone is from the knees to the armpits and most of our umps call a strike from the knees to the bellybutton - a very small zone.

Is this supposed to be an ASA training video? I see good, clear mechanics and the same clip repeated multiple times as if someone is supposed to watch and repeat. His safe call at home was a bit constricted, so it looked more like he was trying to fly than call safe, but otherwise, no problem.

no no all his calls were correct. I play catcher and pitcher. the catcher had to stand up to a little bit to catch the ball. So it was high.ALSO for a foul: If a batted ball first lands in fair territory and then rolls into foul territory between home and third or home and first then it's a foul ball.. and the girl was completely safe no doubt about. nothing to explain.

He apparent'y isn't an ASA umpire. I've never umpired a softball game and never intend to, but I do umpire baseball with a few guys who umpire ASA games on the side for extra cash. They've told me that their guidelines are so strict that there is no room for ambiguity, I highly doubt this umpire would ever pass any kind of strict evaluation.

Heck, he is great. I was always a fan of Ed Montague and Ron Luciano. Having been an umpire myself, I understand being forceful on the calls. It keeps the coaches from whining and also keeps them laughing. The guy is having fun. To those people that have such a hard time with this, go out and try it sometime. You may find umpiring is harder than it looks. And besides, the guy is getting the calls right and has a consistent strike zone. What more do ya want?

I am an umpire who calls as several levels, from youth on up. He has a few mechanics that are not according to the book, but he obviously likes his job, takes it seriously, and is doing the best he can. From what I can see, he is also the only umpire on the field, meaning that he could not be in the best place to make the call at the plate. Let's keep this all in perspective - youth ball, good gamesmanship, good coaching, FUN for the kids.  It's not about adults.

He might want to try and learn to take his mask off properly as well. You never take your mask off with your right hand. What happens if you have to make a quick 'Out' call just after you've taken your mask off with the right hand and you happen to be to close to the play? Not true! In ASA, NCAA and even NFHS softball, they want everyone going by the book, arm extended above the head.... Having your own personal way of doing things is only in baseball. Softball does not want that. Being an ASA, NCAA, and NFHS umpire, I know the mechanics very well.

Back in the old days umpires used to call balls like strikes. The mechanics were the same. The umpires would call the ball using a traditional strike call gesturing towards the batter. Letting the score keeper know it was a ball. And towards the empty batters box a strike. Now days they only do that for strikes. Everyonce and awhile youll see an umpire do a old school ball call.

This call was in the 30s and 40s mostly. Changed due to scorekeepers confusion.

Also he was set up for the catch/no catch call and after he called that, the play exploded on him becuase he was a) too clase to the play and b) out of position. However it was a low level softball game as it appeared. He did a good job selling his calls tho, Better to have an individual play explode than both teams.

Several things.... It is clear that this umpire has never had any formal umpire training of any sort. He is standfing up to make a call before the ball even gets to the catcher. He is out of position for the tag at the plate. He calls safe 3 times, when you should only signal once. He is using a hand signal for a called ball. He called strike 3 on the batter and I am willing to bet it was not strike 3 based on the batter's reaction.

I agree, but remember, this is probably some lower level game somewhere, and the level of the officials is usally commeserate with the players. So for this, hes fine. Probably knows the teams, they know him etc.

Well, first of all its softball umpiring, and softball umpiring mechanics are horrible, they all do the same thing for the most part, robots. Second, this is some small game somewhere, so no biggie, Ump has some funny mechanics, but at this age group, no harm.

But he missed the call at the plate. Swipe tag should have been 3BLX. Tag clearly made before R3 got to the dish.
