Yep, EasyStars are terrific planes for both learning to fly and hauling around lots of weight (cameras, etc.). I'd say they're one of the five best RC planes ever designed.
When it's that cold, do you get any noticeable increase in lift/thrust 'coz the air is denser?

Yes, quite a bit. Thrust is pretty static from season to season, but lift ability/climb rate is increased I'd say by twenty percent or so.
