He's in SMT because he's kinda related to demons, being a demon slayer. Atlus borrowed Dante for Nocturne and returned the favour by designing characters for DMC3

From what I've read, Dante was originally designed by Atlus so they had rights to use him...kinda like how KOS-MOS was going to make an appearance is Super Smash Bros. Brawl

old post, but that's a little wrong, The designer of nocturne was a huge DMC / dante fan, and requested to capcom that they could use dante in the game, providing a short demo using character detail from the DMC series to render him in-game, they loved it, and he was included.

no wgar gappened was that Dante belonged to Capcom, but Atlus wanted to use Dante for Nocturne, and in exchange made the demon forms for Dante and Vergil in DMC3, you can see resemblences from DMC3 demon forms to SMT games.

there is also apparently a Dante's inferno game coming out, but thats based on Dante Alghieri's book, on which Devil May Cry is loosely based on.
