  • Hey "RUSSIAN GREEK" I LOVE THEM GRINDSTONE BLOOD LINES! BOOM!!!

  • Remember who ran with " two bar shoe's " Unbridled Song was a monster ! He ran with two bar shoes on ! What a race !

  • I love how Grindstone, Birdstone, and Mine that Bird were all roaring closers.

  • @MyFutureLover

and Summer Bird has to be included. The wildest family of longshots ever conceived. I wouldn't have bet on any of them according to their form on 'paper' -I guess it's in the bloodline!

  • @MyFutureLover Ditto...

  • It would be nice to see the Kentucky Derby run on the grass.

Do it as an experiment for one year.

  • I remember I thought Baffert had his first derby here for sure. Gutty effort by Grindstone. I believe Unbridled Song was the favorite. He was too close to the early pace and then moved too early.

  • Does anyone else really miss "AND DOWN THE STRETCH THEY COME?"

  • Grindstone by a schnozz! What a great call by Davey Johnson too. Pure excitement! Can you imagine being the owner of either of those 2 horses, and you can't tell at the finish line if your horse won or lost? I'd have 3 heart attacks waiting for that photo!

  • That was probably one of the best races I have ever seen. When they did the replay, it really made me appreciate the skill of the jockey and the talent of the trainer. If I remember correctly, not only did Grindstone come from behind but he went from the back inside, worked his way through the crowd of bunched up horses comin around the turn so that he was actually on the outside before coming down the homestretch.

  • One of the better Kentucky Derby finishes. I was screaming for the gelding Cavonnier to get there..almost

  • I was born in 1996 :D

  • @ginita105 lol me too thats why i searched up this video :P

  • Grindstone's grandson, Mine That Bird, was described as a very balanced horse to ride on by, I think, Mike Smith, who rode him to a second place finish in the Preakness. And, yes breeders breed for speed first, with soundness not a consideration. A horse can earn $2 million in six starts, while a plodder can earn maybe $120,000 in 80 races. Money is more important than the long term health of the breed.

  • i was born that year and the month to the 24th

  • who won, the inside?

  • Nope, outside won it - Grindstone.

This was considered one of Jerry Bailey's best rides

  • no, the outside, Grindstone

  • Comment removed

  • And of course now the most recent winner, Mine That Bird, was grandsired by Grindstone by way of Birdstone.

  • Continuing from before, after Cali horses ran so well in the 96, 97, and 98 Kentucky Derbys, Charismatic, 4th in the Santa Anita Derby, won the Kentucky Derby in 99'. And while Fusaichi Pegasus made his final Derby prep in New York's Wood Memorial, his 3 previous starts had come in Cali, including wins in an allowance race and the San Felipe at Santa Anita.

  • This kicked off 5 years of California dominance in the Derby. Cavonnier, the Santa Anita Derby winner ran 2nd and Prince of Thieves a SA Derby also-ran finished 3rd in this race. Additionally, Cali horse Halo Sunshine was 4th and the winner, Grindstone, started the year in So Cal and ran at Santa Anita before running in Louisiana and Arkansas. In 97' Cali horses Silver Charm and Free House ran 1, 3 and in 98' Real Quiet and Indian Charlie also ran 1st and 3rd.

  • Man, Baffert thought he had it. The best performance in the race was Unbridled's Song. The poor horse was a cripple, wearing a barshoe and he still goes 46/110 and leads inside the eighth pole. Ah, he proved it in the breeding shed.

  • Yeah, he proved it by siring unsound horses like Eight Belles.

The whole line is shit, but very fast when sound. Just not very sound.

The only way to breed to this horse is to put Blushing Groom's line (Rahy etc.) on the damside.

  • You're right. That freaken Unbridled line is shaky, with the brilliant but unsound UBS being right at the head of it.

  • "Grindstone"...very underrated horse. If his racing career had continued, who knows what he would have accomplished...probably would have went down as one of the all time greats!

  • why didn't grindstone run in the preakness?

  • He fractured his Leg,and was Retired just 5 days after the Derby.

  • amazing finish!!! my only wish is that they would have shown grindstone weave through the field.from near the back in the 1st turn to 5th at the top of the stretch...and still able to drive to the finish..wow
