Personally i think he was an amazing character, his characteristics differed him from the rest of the characters his passion for family and what he stood for, people saw him in one piece as an antagonist when really he was pretty much closer to being a protagonist. Even though he's dead he will continue to be a symbol for the pirates within one piece and it's safe to say he proved in this battle alone he was the strongest pirate around.

Whitebeard could have stopped them, but didn't. He sacrificed them, and I simply CANNOT respect that decision. That's all.

Even from an in-universe standpoint, given the extreme losses (and the fact that they failed to save Ace, and that Whitebeard himself lost his life), I still find the decision... iffy. You're still throwing your 1600 men + 43 other bands of pirates - thousands of people - into a fight to save one man. Makes no rational sense.

@Dregunof We know what Roger did. Well kinda. He was very powerful and was dubbed the pirate king. The great man however never wanted such things. Otherwise he could have found One PIece (whether that being Luffy's straw hat or the ponoglyphs). I don't think Roger would have forgiven Squardo (although he knew better and wiped his whole crew). All in all, Roger's own son thought more of Whitebeard than anyone else. Like you said, it's impossible for Roger to rise above the great pirate.
