There is a technical term for music such as this: minimalist. However, I would not classify Minus the Bear in that category completely, since this song is not the stereotypical song type of the group. The drums are rather technical in this song, though often much more so in other songs.

i think the word indie is used way too often where it shouldn't be. indie stands for independent right? which means being signed to an indie label, which mtb are but that doesn't determine the sound they make? a lot of bands are on indie labels but they don't all make the same genre of music... and just to clear it up, i do love minus the bear a load so not hating on them, just that word.
you can find indie bands that are doing heavy metal, and others that are doing hip hop... people has just used indie as a way of saying alternative rock (i suppose that is the best way to call it)... indie is just a legal situation, not a music genre

i think the word indie is used way too often where it shouldn't be. indie stands for independent right? which means being signed to an indie label, which mtb are but that doesn't determine the sound they make? a lot of bands are on indie labels but they don't all make the same genre of music... and just to clear it up, i do love minus the bear a load so not hating on them, just that word.

yeah, thats the point...
you can find indie bands that are doing heavy metal, and others that are doing hip hop... people has just used indie as a way of saying alternative rock (i suppose that is the best way to call it)... indie is just a legal situation, not a music genre

you kidding me? incubus has twice the vocal depth and melody line as minus the bear, they just have a more mainstream typical rock style sound, although I think minus the bear wins on arrangement and originality.

agreed on the melody thing. minus the bear is more rhythm and harmony based. they kind of get you in an infectious groove.
not to detract from either of them though, i think the vocal styles of jake/brandon fit well with their respective bands' style.

haha, yes simon only wishes he had my musical insight. I was just trying to bring a little debate into the commentary, rather than just throwing around claims on who is better. I have since beat planet of ice and menos el oso into the ground listening wise not even quite sure why we're comparing the two bands given they're distinctly different

its quite good for american music but bloc party and foals smash it. There is a hint of minimalism in this but foals is the complete end ofthat spectrum and bloc party, well theyre just bloc party.

I would also say song structure is also important - Minus The Bear really mix up ABACD/whatever the structure may be. How is it that I'm a classically trained musician/singer and yet I cannot usually remember correct musical theory terms? haha
