Patti should sing this by herself...ALWAYS!!. I absolutely love Regina but, she wasn't in tune with Patti for the majority of this song. Patti was killing it but, Regina took away from the performance, because she was off key. Love Patti in this performance though. :)

You can stick to the original melody of a studio recording,.. maybe do A LITTLE tweaking with the notes, phrases and stuff but not TOO MUCH... and still be a GREAT singer...

You can own a song by being loyal to the original but inflicting tinges of you style to it... make it a respectable version but not overdone and unrecognizable compared to the original...
I think both STUDIO versions of IYAMT (Patti and Celin) are really great. .. but when it comes to LIVE versions, Celine is the runaway winner... When patti sings this live, she just improvises too much, she gets lost in the song.. to the point of being too self-serving, self-gratuitous... the audience can no longer catch up with her, let alone sing along.. cause she changes too many things in live...

When your vocal capability is monumentally so much better as to beggar description......... When you can actually sing as opposed to scream...., well, that might have just a bit to do with it.
I don't like the way they sing this. Don't fuck around with the melody. Just sing it. Those black women have wonderful voices, but some of 'em seem to think you have to toy and swing around with the melody. It gets to the point where you can't even hear the song anymore. It's fine sometimes, but when you have a great songwriter like Diane Warren with this particular song, just sing it the way she wrote it. Yelling and swirling about isn't the way to do it. Sing the song the way she wrote it :)
To me a live performance should add sometime extra to a song -in emotions and so forth. Artists like Patti, Aretha, Whitney all do this which is great. If they didn't, u might as well just listen to the track on the cd, u know :). I just LUUUUVVV these soulful live performances!!

Yeah, it was the love theme from a James Bond movie that came out in '89 I think. Celine remade it in the 90s...same arragement and everything....had a huge hit.
