Experimenting with lots of low power equipment can cost a lot more in the long run. I run my entire house from a 3kw inverter,4 110ah leisure batteries and 2 100 watt panels supplimented by a 400 watt wind charger. All 12 volt but when you use an electric kettle that takes 200 amps at 12 volts. I realy enjoy seeing how other people do things. Thanks for posting.
yeah mate sorted video, im lookinat solar panel porn coz i just ordered 2 x 40 watt panels and a charge regulator 100 quid a panel n 20 quid reg , some shops like maplin r asking 600 notes for lesser systems, thanks for the sneak preview WICKEddddd
the amperage really adds up when you convert things to 12V though, I went through my critical loads in my "off grid" garage [experimental lab] and the biggest load turned out to be the portable cooler where the beer is stored. Oh, for the radio, wouldn't hurt to put that in another room or connected to the battery directly with some ferrite beads on the line, it'll cut down on the speaker buzzing and other electrical noise generated by the charge loop.
@dwarfminerwillie Yes moonlight is just reflected sunlight, but there's much less of then than the number of photons directly off the photosphere of a star. Sorry. But hey, try to get a solar cell to light up a LED off of Moonlight. ... See what does not happen.
@popcorncrow Solar panels will work w/ ANY light source. Flashlight, candlelight, car headlights...They're just called Solar because that's their main design intention. ;]
@CaptBart Not really. Not quite. The number of photons needed to establish a usable current from a solar panel is rather large. You need something very close to full daylight before you can set up a voltage, and deliver a current at that voltage.
@popcorncrow Yes "moon shine" will cause PhotoVoltaics to generate power, but less of it. Daytime or night time snow cover will increase the output of PVs.
Great blog. I'm heavily involved with Solar and have lived off grid before also. However, with Federal government rebates being connected to the grid and selling your excess electricity back to the grid, makes it alot more attractive to the masses. Particularily with the price of electricity forever going up.
Solar Energy-Kit has the best price on charge controllers and Sun Electric and the lowest on Solar Panels. How they can go so low I do not know. There is a risk with these low cost sources, but buyer beware... I would get the MPPT type charge controller
@brotherRob3 Better understand now why some folks do not share that information. Solar Energy-Kit has proven to be a bad source. Please do not order from that company. I've believe that they could be less than honest and leave it at that. Sun Electric is legitimate. Google 'Sun electric, complaints' before you order and use an MPPT charge controller for all of the panels purchased there as the output has been known to be different than advertised, yet in series with a MPPT CC it'll be OK.
If you shop at a truckstop for 12-volt accessories. You can find anything you need. Think of it as camping. I had a fridge, TV, stereo system, heated blanket, AC if I wanted to run the truck. I had a DC fan I used on cool nights. I think it's kinda cool living in a truck, (mine had 18 wheels) I could drive almost anywhere, stay a few day without any rent. Worked when I wanted and goof off when I wanted. I do miss the road. I need an RV.
Not sure if this is just a show and tell - BUT putting the cells on a basic angle rack that faces the panels at the sun, noon at the equinox, makes for a good basic tracking, rather than laying them flat.
For a small array - sticking them on a hand spun pivot is a good thing too - aim at the sun at sun rise, 9am, noon, 3pm sunset.
Thank you for that suggestion.. however, i have been forced to hide my panels by laying them flat. Any time i have had a generator operating.. they have been stolen despite the measures i have taken to protect them. I've had a total of 7 generators stolen but none of my panels because people do not "hear" or "see" them.
I found your comment a bit rude... but that's okay. Here is the deal. We have a large number of meth addicts in Del Norte County. These meth addicts do not care about people other than themselves. They carry stolen tools to get to things like Generators. I work in town a lot and cannot keep watch on the property during the day. As a result... that provides plenty of opportunity for theft. I would love nothing more than to murder the next person who steals from me.
Glad you found it a bit rude.... seriously - can you both lock it down and make it unsaleable..... A big hit of paint splash and engraving the parts etc.. and an angle iron welded cage - held in with 4 x 1 meter steel stakes
I have a a junkie cunt next door I'd love to shoot - him and his idiot friends. Dip shit arseholes in the neighbourhood.
@MrJohn196741 I plan on it. Fortunately,i now have a Samsung Galaxy S phone that has a wonderful HD video camera, so lots of detail is available. This video was recorded on my old blackberry curve.
Hey thanks... i do listen to him often, but definitely not often enough. BTW, i stopped listening to Sean Hanity.

Ummmm... I didn't know solar panels would produce power with moon light. Are you sure about that?

@popcorncrow moonlight is just sunlight reflected off the moon

@dncounty
Hide and silence your generator better - or drive some big deep steel stakes into the ground and weld a frame over it.
Anyway what is with the poverty mentality? and bending over while the world fucks your arse?
Mount the frames properly in STEEL and then bolt that to something properly.

Get a dremel style of engraver, and put your license number all over it in about 10 places... and then rub black paint into the grooves...
"Stolen From etc".
Can't take it to a second hand shop for drug money.
No one wants to get caught with it.... etc...
