...and we watch to see how the solve their problems. Often the problems they face and eventually solve are solved on the basic levels and not the fancy tech side though it usually helps. It allows us to see ways to solve issues we face today. Also by using plausible technology we see advancements. Do you like your Cell Phone? you can thank Star Trek for that. Fantasy is good too, as it can explore the same types of things, and help us see society differently.
Science fiction, is sometimes called Science Fantasy, because it deals with things beyond the scope of our understanding but it uses parts of our understanding so that the human interactions of the medium can be explored. It has been said that no fiction tells us about ourselves better than science fiction. It has also been said the Science Fiction is the mirror to humanity. This is because Science fiction takes the problems we face and sets them in a time or place where there is advanced tech..
@masere I would say just like the tv series, they are observing on what they have found. They must have gotten a cloaking devise to watch them. Although it is strange for them to just sit and watch the death star to destroy a planet and they do nothing to help. So in my opinion, they found transmissions of a galaxy far far away, and they are watching and observing them. Awsome video oh!
LOL! Geek moment here...the assessment Data makes of X-wings being "sub-light" only is incorrect. X-wings and Y-wings have hyperdrives. :) End geek moment.
@martok2112 Yeah, I loved that up until that point. I'm not that into SW (well only when compared to the super hard core fans) but I caught that immediately.
While this is going on, the Romulans are plotting with the Ferengi to take over the Federation and the Borg are slowly creeping toward Earth. And Q decided to finally take a shower.
I always thought the original bridge from the original Star Trek would be a great place to watch movies, but I guess that the panels behind the captain on the Enterprise D could be replaced with a microwave oven to make popcorn and a vending machine with chocolate bars and candy. Oh yeah, and also a soft drink dispenser.
Inadequate, Jean-Luc?? Inadequate my ass!! I love Star Wars, but I love Star Trek a thousand times more, particularly Star Trek: The Next Generation! This was absolutely fantastic! Very well done, ColbyCornish!!
@ImaRocketDog1 Uh oh... Now you did it! You done goofed! You said the wrong thing! (Never tell a hard-core, delusional Star Wars fan, "It's only a movie!" Now you're going to have thousands of Star Wars fans seeking to back trace you so they can find you in real life and give you the scowling of your life! Consequences will never be the same!
@walter0bz sci-fi is boring. It deals with technology. Technology is nothing but the hammer in your hands. How is that "the best". It deals with secular humanism, completely ignoring the true nature of reality or more easily put, the Energetic or Divine nature of everything in existence. How is that "the best"?? (You are aware of the new science aren't you?) Fantasy on the other hand at least dares to explore things that are closer to this greater reality than limited sci-fi.
@walter0bz ""the greater reality" is tangible science", nope not anymore. Mainstream science is probably more dogmatic than the 3 Abrahamic religions. SciFi is a relatively new genre, whereas fantasy has always existed and is always able to be redefined into whatever. Sci-fi is rigid, because it is based in rigid science, no matter how much you try to create a futuristic technology. It is a limited view of reality. Besides, human stories is what existence is all about. Cont:
@KiopGenJin The only way sci-fi could become a more holistic genre is if it embraced all the things that are embraced in fantasy. Fantasy is a mirror of reality.
Whereas sci-fi is merely a limited version of fantasy. Anything not reality is fantasy, you do know that, right? Star Trek in particular is very cold, which is why it does not resonate so deeply with most of humanity. Fantasy on the other hand does. That's all that matters, which one helps/examines the human condition more.
@KiopGenJin The human condition is not given a fair examination if one focuses on ideologies such as utopianism scientific materialism. That's as inhuman as it gets.
We're not a bunch of robots. We are spiritual beings. And that fact that sci-fi for the most part takes this cold approach of examining it's effects on human society is what leaves me uninterested, because society and reality itself is far more complex. And sci-fi's censorship of these elements is worrisome.
@KiopGenJin I can understand that you find it worrisome, for you seem to have a great deal of ideological investment in your religious, divine-nature-of-things stuff, but calling it censorship is a bit much.
It may be true that you have a conception of sci-fi that is aspiritual, but I can think of many examples off the top off my head of sci-fi which fully addresses the human condition.
@KiopGenJin Strange, how most of the intelligent humans' spirits are based on exploration and discovery and learning and, and doing and going to and what no man has or rarely done before.
@SCIFIguy64 Yeah, exactly. Maybe for Kiop Star Trek is cold because it doesn't have enough of those magical elements he's used to (although they did have Q, but Q was understandable, which I sense is something Kiop dislikes: the phrase mystery-worshipper comes to mind), but Star Trek wasn't just about people using tech, as you said, it's about discovery, and new experiences, and bettering oneself.
...it's just not about in-your-head fantasy not real experiences (talking to you, KiopGenJin)
@KiopGenJin Speaking of ideology, you seem to have it backwards, which might why you're seemingly offended by shows like Star Trek. More accurately, you should've said: It deals with secular humanism, ignoring everything but the nature of reality.
Fantasy tends to incorporate conceptual elements like magic. But Sci-fi tends to be materialist, in the sense that it focuses on reality itself, and technology, and it's uses.
@KiopGenJin Fantasy, in fact, incorporates human fantasies like magic, over reality itself. Materialism is rather that which does not ignore reality, and tends to focus on nothing but reality. Nothing but the greater reality.
@thejerrymobile Yeah but in the next sentence he says that they're accelerating to Warp five which is FTL. So it depends on which part of that you are taking to be true.
1:50 -- So, Data says that the X-wing is capable of sub-light travel only... and then in the next scene says they're accelerating to warp 5. I'm a nerd...
@PrototypeClex I agree. Except, the creator of this video had to add the moment where Picard is sucking up to Q with the hopes of having him send them away from the Delta Quadrant.
It was good up until that point. Then it just became another nerdy "my show is better than your show" clip.
What should have been in this clip was Riker's comment about the Husnock ship - "It's carrying enough firepower to pulverize a planet" - more apt for the Death Star than "a hole in space"!!
@masere Well depending on your definition of "Pulverize" Even a Star Destroyer would qualify since it has the ability to make what happened to Delta Rana IV, or Reach for that matter, look like a church picnic.

@KiopGenJin -
sci-fi has greater depth.
Sci fi can have emotion-based human stories in it too, if thats what floats your boat.
(e.g. using robots and aliens to explore aspects of humanity, or putting humans in exaggerated situations).
Fantasy is limited - it's regular stories with pretty backgrounds.
"the greater reality" is tangible science. The mystery is in the sheer complexity (e.g. the trillions of connections in the brain)

It's adorable seeing them get all worked up and excited about a movie they're apparently supposed to hate. Can't we enjoy both?

@PrototypeClex I agree. Except, the creator of this video had to add the moment where Picard is sucking up to Q with the hopes of having him send them away from the Delta Quadrant.
It was good up until that point. Then it just became another nerdy "my show is better than your show" clip.

Nice work

What should have been in this clip was Riker's comment about the Husnock ship - "It's carrying enough firepower to pulverize a planet" - more apt for the Death Star than "a hole in space"!!
masere 3 months ago
@masere Well depending on your definition of "Pulverize" Even a Star Destroyer would qualify since it has the ability to make what happened to Delta Rana IV, or Reach for that matter, look like a church picnic.

@2:41 "You wanted to show us that we were inadequate? For the moment, I KRAUT that."
Seriously. What does he actually say? I've played it 20 times over and can't figure it out!

@raynestarrw "For the moment, I grant that."

@raynestarrw Sure thing! I can't stand when I can't quite make out the exact words in dialogue, lyrics, etc. either.
