BS Anime Reviews: Rin Daughters of Mnemosyne

Oh gosh I just finished watching this on Netflix. And I constantly had to rewind a couple parts to catch what they were saying. By ep. 4 I followed most of what they were saying about the story...and then the last two episodes happened. :c Confused as hell.

'Mnemosyne' (pronounced ne-mo-zi-nee) in Greek mythology is the river of memory, as opposed to 'Lethe' the river of forgetfulness. I haven't seen this anime, but the title is probably describes the 'memory', or immortality of these girls who stay young forever and cannot age. That is, the 'memory' of their youth.

Comment 3: Of course, since Rin only has 6 episodes it's plot can not be as deep as Higurashi's for example, which has more than 50 episodes. But like I said, if you watch it from a different POV, everything logically adds up and makes sense in the end. I do agree though that sometimes the sex scenes actually are a bit...random and annoying. I didn't get as pissed off as you about them, I mean hey! That's why Rin is rated as a hardcore Ecchi. Don't like, don't watch, simple as that ^_~

@BionicSlime Still, if you give a review on something you really shouldn't criticize traits that are simply part of the genre. Rin is classified as hard Ecchi, meaning it's almost a hentai, so there HAS to be naked skin and a few censored, short sex scenes. Criticizing Rin for having a lot of sexual referances is like criticizing Pokemon for having fantasy creatures in it ;-) It's okay if you simply don't like Rin, but you should still keep a review as objective as possible ;-)

@masteroflag in other words it makes me weep more for anime fandom that it does exist in dub form at all- it does have a right to exist itself since it can sell and some can possibly see it as art, kinda like fans of School Days and Masters of Martial Hearts. But in mass just like MMH I have no idea why it was something considered for the US let alone dub it.

Comment 2: Higurashi no naku koro ni uses the same style of plotline for example. The anime bombards you with gore and a whole lot of small details that just don't add up to anything. You need to be quite smart to actually realize that, but once you figured it out and start to watch the anime from a different POV, you see that Higurashi has a very deep, intelligent and absolutely logic plot. It's the same with Rin. (to be continued in comment 3...god I hate the 500 characters limit! >_<)

The reason why you say Rin's plot doesn't make sense is because it is told in reversed fashion and you seem to not have understood that. Reversed plot means that the things that are usually small, meaningless details (in this show it would be the sex) are practically shoved into your face while you need to squint for what would be the actual storyline (in this case, Rins character development in relation to Mimi, Apos and the Guardian). Rin actually makes a lot of sense once you figured that out

I just saw this anime on Netflix. While I agree with most of what the video said, I'd be kind and give it a 3 out of 5 stars. Rin Daughters of Mnemosyne looked good, sounded good and after each episode I wanted to see another.

This show reminds me of the concept of rape in Ninja Scroll the series. In the movie, it kind of just happens which is unfortunate. In the series, it becomes a recurring theme. Not to say the sex in here is a recurring theme, the fact that it's part of the plot line is unfortunate.

I bought this and Soul Eater part 3 on a splurge buy. And I've learned never to do that again. Soul Eater for the most part was worth it but you're right the sex in Rin was suffocating. Even for people who enjoy hentai related anime and fanservice. The beginning was enjoyable but all the angel sex and consuming fruit souls towards the end of the series just seemed really bizarre.

I just finished watching it and I think its amazing! They are intertwining real hardcore S&M and presenting it with the idea of immortality , angels....its very very twisted but its twisted very smartly with lots of thought of plot... and jumping ahead hella years , telling the whole story with 6 episodes? Super amazing. I honestly did not catch on to the Angels looking like S&M men until the 6th episode and you know they held out on that on purpose. I just think its cool different cool!

Its not so much the sex itself alone but its also how they tried to make the sexual stuff be part of the rules, like they had a "scientific reason" for it being there and I found that utterly idiotic. I strongly disagree with some points of the review; while I agree that the characters shift around way too much and a lot of their personalities don't get fleshed out a whole lot, I have to say I don't see where the fascination with sex ever came in. I've seen way worse than this. And you mispronounced a lot of words and strongly suggest finding the correct pronunciations. Overall though, I felt like you were watching with a biased view from the start, so you come off biased in the end anyway.

I just got done Watching this series, and I say after taking a few minutes to piece things together I found it decent but weird. I wanted to see if what review there were on it and found yours; I agree the whole "Sex" theme made this odd to watch but just like the endless amount of B&G I was like please I've seen enough animated boobs and blood to last me a life time so R:DOM was nothing. In reality after the first few episodes I was in it more for the plot and what would occur next.

regardless of all your negative arguments(everyone who was) towards the anime called, "rin", i just wanted to say that i love this anime. rin, the character itself had a very long history and to think about her having to wait for her love 1 from the ancient time is very lonely and heartbreaking. the story of maeno kouki to his descendants surrounding/involving with rin's life is very interesting. the anime doesn't have alot of attractive songs, but the story itself is very unique in my opinion.

A lot of good points are brought up in this review. I'd like to take the time to explain to everyone why this show was created: satire. It's not meant to be taken seriously. It was created to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the AT-X network, acting as a throwback to all the sex-and-gore filled anime of the 90s. However, they brought these elements out to such extremes that it can be viewed on the same level as Shakespeare; yeah, it sounds serious, but it's meant to be extreme.

As for the male leads, most of them getting killed off was an emphasis of RIn and Mimi's immortality, that they shall stay living in earth forever while mortals, mostly men because obviously they turn into angels if they eat time fruits, will perish. You contradict yourself, @BionicSlime. If this show was supposedly put in a channel (ATX) where it's equivalent to cinemax, then of course it's going to have some softcore aspects. As far as the characters and plot, Rin was a great lead female character, strong but at the same time burdened with immortality and loss of mortal companions and/or lovers. I do agree with you about Mimi, she was more or less a side character.

This show tried to make something utterly idiotic and porno-esque and have it taken seriously and that;s why it sucked. It was FAR beyond absurd, it was puke inducing. For your question, no, I've never reviewed a single property of Ghost in the Shell.

@BionicSlime You should try Ghost in the Shell sometime. Its a very "Pull you in and hook you" if you can understand and keep up with the plot. But they have 2 movies the seasons are based off of. But it all goes back to people becoming so advanced they have better prosthetic bodies and how people are so immersed in the "net" of the world that people with prosthetic bodies now have a being or soul called a Ghost. its kinda like a NCIS so you don't even care for the small glimpses or nudity.

@ChibiVampie Honestly, I try to make an even balance with my highs and lows but at the end, I have to make a judgment call and this one didn't work. Agent Aika for example was more of a gag anime, it had similar outrageous sexual concepts but didn't take itself seriously which made it fun. Rin took itself WAY too seriously and seemed more like a well crafted porno then something amusing.

Being silly is one thing, but being silly & acting like its serious (like the movie Machete') doesn't work.

Lol. Gentlemen, and any ladies around. If your going to devle into the darker animes. Leave your inhibitions behind. The culture in Japan where most these are made. Is a lot different, and not so prudish as our own in the West. =D Found only the early episodes really delved into the torture/rampant sex. Later episodes tended to gloss of the scenes mostly. Still violant, but not in the same vein.

@Justicar333 I'm not one to dabble or delve into darker, disturbingly overtly sexual anime or regular movies for that matter outside of horror movies and even then I have my limits. I merely did this as a request someone made to me and reviewed it with my most honest and sincere opinion.

@BionicSlime I understand that. Simply feel, the final score was overshadowed. And overly low, due to concern about sexual content. Which is perfectly within your right as reviewer. Still, I personally disagree with the scoring. :) Just because the reviewer might be uncomfortable, a very good anime shouldn't be given such a terrialbe score. =D It might turn off others who would have enjoyed it, thinking more substantive things wrong. Which didn't seem the case from your review.

@Justicar333 I measured the good and the bad and I just felt the bad overshadowed the good to the point where it didn't seem worth it. If one finds the sexual content enjoyable then that's all well and good but as a reviewer and as someone who is trying to review this thing properly, i didn't see how any of the sexual content worked and as professional as I try to be, every reviewer will have his or her own biases.

sex and gore aside, i still enjoyed the hell out of rin: daughters of mnemosyne regardless. even though it was fucked up, that will be straight about the show.

Everything u said was completely true. I actually enjoyed the first couple episodes, but then it started to go down hill, and what Aposs became at the end just left me sick
