I would agree that Robs vocals got better. I can say the same thing for Adam Franklin of Swervedriver. We all know that vocals weren't the focal point of the shoegaze bands in the first place
No matter how much you like a band you have to be truthful when it sounds like shit. I love Catherine Wheel but this video and a few others I've watched sound like shit. Don't fool yourselves. And I'm not trying to start a fight either.
Oops, I meant I agree with zeecezzzy. I appreciate that this video was posted because it's another example of how TV shows, especially late night TV shows get the mix completely wrong for bands. The "engineers" should put forth a little more effort. CWs live performances were highly praised. Personally, I think they sounded better live than on the studio albums. Yes, they were that good, and underrated.
I agree with MrJeronimofo, the mix is terrible. CW is "shoegaze" i.e. "wall of sound" with subdued vocals, not forward vocals and subdued guitars. Too bad as CWs live performances were among the best I've ever heard.
@MrJeronimofo the vocals arent bad. the mix is shit. they have the guitars way to low and the vocals and drums up to high. the cw sound on the albums usually was a layered sound and they buried the vocals pretty deep in the mix with lots of reverb. here they didnt do any of that. part of the reason a lot of the vocals seem crappy in these 90's vids is because the audio tech didnt do the live mix right. shows the importance of audio guys really.
Yes.Rob does sound pretty 'flat' and overtly restrained here, but the band was still fairly new at that point. His vocal delivery got stronger and more confident with the subsequent albums, and live. For example, just find his 2007 'Black Metallic' solo performance here from Tractor in Seattle, and you'll see what I am talking about. He's absolutely nailed the vocal there, so much so that is sounds better than on the album!
Catherine Wheel ! What a great band... Check out Crank, nuther classic. You can't go wrong with any of their CD's. You have to listen a few times before it clicks. Interesting factoid is that Rob is younger cousin of Bruce Dickinson of Iron Maiden Fame.
All of you Catherine Wheel and shoegazing fans, hear me! we need to start to share this rare and glorious sound to the rest of the world! seriously, it's a fucking shame that these guys are not as famous as Muse, green day, metallica, iron maiden or AC/DC! so let’s start new shoegazing wave! share and tips this to anyone who like good and loud guitars with awesome lyrics! who is with me? Spread the word!
@ckobesko Ignore this doofuses comment, he just came here to troll this video because I angered him by pointing out his ignorance in the field of something completely unrelated (electronics). He listens to country music and has videos documenting track lighting in his basement. Enough said.
I love this song, but this is God awful. No stamina whatsoever.

Fine, I'll give you that. Live recordings of Rob's new solo work sounds spot on though.
