It's amazing to hear the strength and beauty of the signature African sound of Geoffrey Oryema, yet let us never forget the turmoil and hardship that plagues the African continent.
In songs like "Exile," "Land of Anaka," and "Solitude," you will not only understand Oryema's nostalgia for his lost Uganda, but you will remember what you have lost, too.
You will remember with love, and desolation - and an overriding sense of peace. You will find a measure of gratefulness for having loved something, someone, someplace, so profoundly that even having lost it all, you remember the gift and are glad.
"We had hopes. We had dreams..." sings Geoffrey. It is the refrain of his song.

Yes, Africa is calling. And Oreyma's response is this song of rejoicing, of mourning, of hopeless hope.
Today, Oryema lives in Paris. He is nowhere near his green Ugandan land. He fled Adi Amin's reign of terror. Geoffrey's father, murdered at the hands of Amin's assassins, remains behind, having soaked the roots of Uganda's grassy earth with his blood.
'Land of Anaka' is an exile's song of rejoicing and mourning, of hopeless hope. Peter Gabriel lovingly sings harmony, while a sensitive percussionist grounds the song. Oreyma is given such care and attention that all three blossom. The song is a prayer. The audience is devoted
The gathering takes place under a giant white bandshell somewhere in Johannesburg. This song easily fills the space.
If one's heart wasn't full enough, Nelson Mandela, surprisingly, is to join the musicians as tendrils of the refrain, "we had hopes... we had dreams..." drift out over the crowd in late afternoon sun.
But. We don't see Mandela. The video blips out, black, finished. We miss the song, even before it has ended. We are abruptly dislocated.
It's easy to find the lyrics but the parts where he sings in his native language is automatically translated to english, so u can still try to mimic what he says. but send me a MP if u want the Lyrics
Wow, thnx man, I almost forgot about that question...I tried to find them myself while playing and I was close but I didn't play the strings in right order so I wasn't sure If I found the correct chords...anyway thanks again for your effort ;) BTW it's such an easy song to play but at the same time it sounds so beautiful...
I saw G. Oreyema and Peter Gabriel together back in 1994 on tour. I was so moved by Oreyema's voice, I went searching everywhere for a CD right away. It's so nice to see them still working together! Thanks for posting!

Africa is calling.
Oryema sings of his lost, lovely Uganda with a tenderness that you may find hypnotic, entrancing.
There is nothing corny about the mingled hope and hopelessness in Oryema's voice as he pays tribute to the Ugandan land of his youth.
