lightning is the result of the charged air particles in the clouds being forced upwards by the wind of the storm. All of the work put in by the wind to increase the separation of the charged water and the ground increases the strength of the attraction, until it overcomes the air barrier by breaking down and the current 'jumps' to the ground.
