He is aware of DnD and other roleplaying games, he just prefers more structured games like Descent. Real RPGs have more depth, but they are also more taxing (time-consuming to prepare, and e.g. "handling" the players) on the DM.
haha, I actually watched this videos to find out wether descent is in your top 20 or not. I never expected it to be that high since the balancing aint that good. well try t get a german versin of road to legend... u pay 3 times the price of the basic games. andactually its that with alle expensions except the latest one. the well of darkness is sold out again since a month or so. u amricans realy have it way more easy on that one. english expensions r always available
@WilliamSilverful If you like Heroscape then I think you will like DnD. I just played it for the first time this past week and it was awesome(as long as you get a good DM). It's like a less structured version of Heroscape but not in a bad way. What I mean is that the possibilities are fairly limitless. You should definitely play if you get a chance.
Have you ever reviewed mutant chronicles? also a dungeon crawler game and was one of my favorite, anything like it (Descent) should be amazing i will purchase them haha
omg descent looks so fun. it reminds me of a game my dad played when i was like 6 but was too young to understand it. It might have been a version of dungeons and dragons with miniatures, are there any other like this?
I played descent as the dungeon master ... quit fun and the dice throws are sort of my specialty all in all .... I always get waht I need but I su** at card games ...
The Great Dalmuti = one of the best card "party" games. Dark Tower is a classic. Formula De is easy to learn and fun plus there are different tracks you can buy. I still like table top games like Warhammer too
to me all these three games sound prettx much the same, so playing such sort of adventure role playing table topboardgames must be really your faavourite. Have you ever heart of talisman
@Noirarion He definetely had. Talisman is a classic.
I've never played it, but I heard it's quite boring with lots of dice rolling and not very ellegant compared to newer games.
However, I know one guy who played it (and he isn't a board gamer as far as I can tell, however, he is damn good at chess) and he said it was really good.
i have just got into heroscape but in the uk its pritty much dead and i am unable to find the sets, ebay has them but are way over priced :( i hope thay re-release it,my sis is buying me descent for my birthday carnt wait.may have a look at duel of ages.
I want to play descent so bad!! I cant believe he has played over 1500 board games!! I dont think I want to know how many hours I have put into all of the video games ive played.
Very informative. I have never played any of these games but they look like a lot of fun. My top three are: 3 Talisman, 2 Settlers of Catan, 1 Stratego.
@spider That's a Hold-It card organizer. You can google that and you'll find it. It works great for a lot of games. I use it for Catan and Ticket to Ride
where did you get the card holder and cases you used for descent? i have the game and for now, i'm separating everything into little zip locks. but it'd be nice to have some of those cases.
yeah google.........there are stores that only sell or specalize in games so they probably have the cases you want for cards, characters, sets. etc etc
i eventually figured out that they're using tackle boxes. I found a bead case in an art store so I got that. ALso found these wooden treasure chest cases and heart shaped cases. I used the heart case for health pips, and the treasure boxes hold the cards for treasures.
I mean: I know a lot of board gamers, and nearly noone of them has a very well known board game like Monopoly, Risk or Clue as his favorite game (including me).
But Tom seems to like "Clue: The Museum Caper" (how he would say) "quite a bit" xD
I hope you don't think I wanted to offend you, because that's the last thing I wanted.
I just don't like Clue very much, because it's a bit boring to go around the board and because if someone has a better note system than everyone else he will win the game.
But I think the biggest reason for me not liking it, is because there are (in my opinion) much better games out there!
one question..i dot have many friends to play board games...wich games i can play alone?can you reccomend any game that i can play alone?if is possible 3 options ..thanks!!!
I great board game you can play alone is the old Games Workshop DUNGEONQUEST game. A little warning in advance - it's very difficult to win. I think you can find used copies of it in eBay for around $30.
My previous posts aside though ... I have to commend Tom. I own over 200 board games of my own, I'm an avid gamer and do RPGs, Miniature Games, Video games and of course board games. I have to say that the wealth of your reviews is AWESOME!! Its really cool to see people doing this sort of thing. Its nice to get a feel for a game before you decide whether or not to buy it. Its nice to get a quick little review before pulling a game out after a long time on the shelf too. Please keep it up!!
Decent is not a very fun game for advanced board game players. Play warhammer 40k, Warhammer Fantasy, Warmachine, D&D ... all far superior to this game. If you are playing with kids or non-gamers .. Decent is great. I like these reviews but I'd recommend cross referencing these reviews with board game geek. Also the "all time" stuff is really not fair to all of the out of print games out there many, many of which are far superior to your top three.
I think heroscape and descent are games for people who only play board games and won't or can't play miniature games. Games like Warmachine, Warhammer 40k, Warhammer Fantasy, etc. are much more enjoyable and much more well designed. Heroscape and Decent are really dumbed down and very basic. I love playing Heroscape with my kids, but wouldn't even consider it with the gaming group. Same with Decent it is D&D for non-RPG players, its a super basic dungeon crawl. Heroscape is also collectible.

I bought all three DOA games and the Scrye magazine expansion recently! I can't wait to get the Master's Addendum and the other 3 expansions! I've even taught it to my non board gamer friends! (They LOVE HALO and WWII FPS's though which helps!) :-)
This game is amazing!
Thanks for the review Tom!

Diplomacy is an excellent game, very good for teaching, and a classic.
And I hate it. :)
Game of Thrones is very similar, although I like it a bit better.
Both games give me a headache thanks to multiple backstabbings and angry outbursts.

do they sell theses games at walmart and could i play theses games with my family? also is it fun to play with just 1 or 2 other people?

Heroscape you'll find in all the big chains...Descent and Duel, you'd have to go to a specialty games store.
It's actually really surprising that a game as SOLID as Heroscape is so widely available.

I originally just wanted to see what you thought of Arkham Horror and ended up watching the full top 20. I'll now go back to watching the other 80 games you've reviewed. Thanks for the entertainment and I'm really looking forward to more videos. Top notch - cheers

You know you've Talked about Duel of Ages plenty of times on the Cast, but for some reason I always thought it was more of a Duel in the Dark kind of game so never got that interested.
But that sounds really cool! I want!

Wow, finally at the end :) Me and a few friends are just getting back in boardgaming after 10 - 15 years and it's been great to get an overview of so many titles.
