  • Actually I do prefer the french version, because the ringwraith's voices are more seductive when they claim the Ring.

  • ya hate arwen stealing frodo's good parts in PJ version.

  • To be honest I'm a bit disappointed that PJ didn't include the scene when the wraiths are unmasked.

  • "I am Boromir". Uh, thanks for telling us. Never would've recognized you with that viking helmet. :P

  • @Gasoline85

Imagine if Sean Bean wore that =)

  • bilbo looks like he's 3 sheets to the wind. terrible animation..

  • i swear i can't stop laughing at this.

  • None of the instruments that appear beginning at 6:48 would make a sound REMOTELY like what is being played on the soundtrack. (Sorry, musician observation.)

  • Is it my imagination or is Frodo's complexion darker than Merry & Pippins in this version? In the book I got the impression he was fair-skinned.

  • WTF BORIMIR IS A FUCKING VIKING!!!!

AND WHO HIRED JULIUS CEASER TO PLAY ELROND???? WHAT IS WITH THEESE GUYS LEGOLES LOOKS HORRIBLE AND WHERE IS GLORFINDIL?!?!

  • @MultiABC246 Glorfindel was not in any of the films. I think they left him out to avoid confusion. And also, it's Legolas with an A.

  • "Youtube, you better not try to get this deleted or may The Almighty Himself deal with you jusly in the destiny he has woven..."

So......you can call down the power of the Almighty and smite youtube?

  • 2:39 Wait a minute I thought Black Riders couldn't pass through running water?

  • @marmik961 I think you mean 3:39

  • @dragonson04 I did typeo but can you explain how the black riders crossed the river I thought they couldn't do that.

  • 2:40 Oh to Mordor we will take you I thought they were saying tomorrow we will take you.

  • it wouldve been interesting to see Rankin-Bass do FOTR and TT. I was so used to the Hobbit cartoon as a kid then when i saw this i was like WTF. And their version of ROTK was so detached. That said, it would've been equally interesting to see Bakshi finish LOTR part two...

  • Why oh why do I still laugh at the idea of a little hobbit becoming a black rider? I mean, think about it! Why are the black riders like going all E.T. with the flying though?!

  • Why is Frodo fully dressed in bed after Elrond just operated on him? Surley they wouldn't have put his dirty clothes back on him.

  • Damn Ralph Bakshi sucks dick at making movies..

  • Fear the magic hand of the ring wraith! It makes people faint, horses topple over, and J.R.R Tolkien do this: "... T_T"

  • Am loving this frodo big time, he wad gonna knock some senses into bilbo lmao

  • Frodo's not too tall. The book describes him as "taller than some and fairer than most." I like that they made him taller.

  • Biggest pet peeves with PJ's movies: No Glorfindel and Frodo comes off as a wimp a lot of the time. This, while the animation is a little odd, is soooo much better.

Don't get me wrong, the PJ movies are some of my favorite movies of all time. But the books are my favorite books, and the parts that got unnecessarily changed make me cringe.

Sam is awful in this version. And I like Viggo Mortensen as Aragorn a lot better. But hey, no version is going to make everyone happy.

  • @saraheflood24 Yeah I agree if it weren't for his depiction of Sam, Bakshi's version would be better than Jackson's hands down. Maybe they could go back and rotoscope Sean Astin into this version.

  • @saraheflood24 Glorfindel isnt in this movie either.

  • @saraheflood24 Frodo came off as a wimp? Really? Frodo remained incredibly strong considering the circumstances. I don't think any of us would do much better with the Ring hanging around our necks like an albatross. And if you have a peeve about no Glorfindel in Jackson's version, I suggest you go back a few minutes and see that the blonde person on the horse isn't Glorfindel either.

  • 2:35 asian frodo

  • 2:33 We are the knights who saaaaaaaaaay.... RING!!!

  • @BaronVonKenny lol

  • omg that face bilbo gives in the movie when he wants to see "his" ring again--so scary

  • This version is just weird frodo is tall af and it looks weird

  • @Gar0201 stfu

  • Comment removed

  • and if the black riders have those big horns under their hoods, why cant u tell when they have their hoods ON???? wouldnt it like lift the hood up?????

  • @ :55 michael jackson

  • No life or mystic beauty to Rivendell....

    So opposite from Tolkien's description

  • I'll never sleep again o_O

  • Rivendell looks like a gipsy slum.

  • 8:21 "AH-CHOOOOO!!!"

  • I am so confused in the beginning is he dreaming what happen to the other hobbits and Aragorn and Legoles

  • @broadwaylifealways4

He's not dreaming. It may seem like he is, but it's because he's been stabbed by the morgul blade and the other hobbits, Aragorn, and Legolas sent Frodo off by himself.

  • @broadwaylifealways4 OK ya I just saw Aragorn fall and then this happen I got so confused thanks for the help

  • where's galadriel??

  • Comment removed

  • Pause at 7:37 Sam looks sick! xD

  • I like how they have Gimli wearing a hood. I don't think that they make mention of this in the LOTR novels so someone obviously knew a little about The Hobbit. I think that they should have the dwarves in the upcoming movie wear hoods, at least for the part where they are introduced.

  • Wow, I never saw Gandalf as a braggy kinda guy.

  • Why is Frodo so freaking tall? Even among the hobbits...

  • elrond looks like arnold schwarzenegger

  • While it certainly has its flaws I do appreciate some of the details that come directly from the book that were not used in Jackson's film.

  • Wow,I really like this version of frodo! He really has more courage then the jackson version. No doubt in the bakshi's LOTR, little frodo has balls!

  • LOLED my ass of at 8:15 HAHA!

  • @marsvin55 I laughed so hard at 8:15 too! Why do all the Hobbits look retarded in this version?!?!

  • OH GOSH I'M SORRY FOR A DOUBLE COMMENT, BUT @8:15 I AM DEAD.

  • When the wraiths are telling Frodo to come back at around :40, the guy sounds like a Jewish grandmother with a frog in her throat. "Come baaack, come baaaack, to mawda well take yew."

  • how come no lotr movies show the part in the barrow downs or the old forest

  • @cool82598 Im gessing the old forrest bit is the part with tom bombadil but whats the part in the barrows?

  • @fred9136 the hobbits are caught on the barrow downs between the house of tom bombadil and bree. They get trapped by a barrow wright and are eventually saved by tom. the most important result is that Pippin (and the other hobbits) acquires a sword forged by the men of numinor, which he eventually uses in RotK to pierce the witch-king's ankle, other wise, eowyn would never have been able to off said witch-king/chief of the nazgul. (I yell a lot at this part in the movie. it's very important)

  • It would appear that Gondor has gone from being a mighty numorean kingdom to vikings :L

  • it seems if you get too close to the ring it makes you sneeze or maybe bilbo just happened to need to sneeze as he looked at it

  • Boromir and Aragon are both Gondorian but ones a native and the a Viking, I don't get it.

  • @FrogWalrus aragorn is more a ranger than a gondorian, he was raised by elves and grew up as a ranger

  • Hm. my channel had an issue, and all my comments, everywhere, seem to have been deleted. Shame. Oh well. Ah, love watching this again. But those eagles are still a fair plot hole. Shame, really.

  • 8.16 It's the exorcist remake

  • guess the guys who made this cartoon can't tell the difference between northmen and norsemen.

  • where is Arwen (Elf girl)!??

  • @PS2arecool i think she is not that important, and she really didnt do anything, other than being Elronds daughter

  • u naughty boy

  • 8:16 .....HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!

  • 02:35 "If you want him, come & claim him!" Oh wait, wrong movie!

  • @cleanhomer this made me laugh your so right tho. Where are is the girl and Boromir looks like Gimli!

  • @PS2arecool used to think that too :P

  • 8:23 thats what she said

  • @JamieCFurbo OH WOW Lol :DD

  • "I am Boromir!"

Uh.....Leif Erickson auditions are next door.

  • I dont know why but the rotoscoping makes the parts where he wears the rings seem more surreal. Which makes it better I think.

  • @tyrongkojy Okay, you are NOT a Troll. That was definitely an exaggeration. Coming back? You brought this upon yourself, friend. Just read the damn argument on the "Headscratchers" section of the TV Tropes article on LOTR already so you can see that Tolkien did NOT fuck up. I won't stop until this discussion comes full circle. Please, read the argument on the Eagles, and stop delaying the inevitable.

  • @tyrongkojy Just look at the page, and we can both get on with our lives.

  • @tyrongkojy Look at the "Headscratchers" section of the Lord of the Rings article of TV Tropes. They have the argument regarding Eagles fleshed out.

  • Those Nazgul are fucking scary!!

  • @tyrongkojy Well, if anyone else watching this video wants to read through the comments. they shouldn't have to read either half of the argument.

  • @tyrongkojy I didn't run. You're just too butt-hurt to admit you are a Troll ruining other people's fun. Now remove your comments. NOW. Remove them. NOW. Learn how to spell. NOW. Learn how to use proper grammar. NOW. Learn how not to Troll. NOW. Learn how a discussion is properly ended. NOW. You made no valid points; you trolled yourself into denial. You didn't do the research. If you did, you would know that the Eagles couldn't have flown them to Mordor, because of the war.

  • Oh my God Bilbo's face...I laughed my ass off XD

  • LOL bilbo's spazing out at 8:15

  • 6:46 gandalfs a pedo and frodo's scared

  • Bilbo and Samwise -- either brothers or Sam's a result of Bilbo's youthful indiscretions. Good gods, the animation's bad.

  • 3:04

Did...did he just use the force?

  • At 8:14, Bilbo has a spaz attack.

  • 3:03 Force choke!

  • watch this me movie stoned...epic

  • Its the force.....

  • @3:04 wraith goes all Darth Vader status on Frodo force choke

  • I love the fact that frodo is more like he was in the book. He actually fights back and stands up for himself. Too bad they didn't do the same with sam

  • @mrdropkicker1 Finally someone agrees with me. This is Frodo's finest hour and Peter Jackson changed it. Bakshi's adaptation of the book is much better than Jackson's (imo).

  • frodo's trippin balls!

  • 8:15 SEIZURE moment

YeAh, Boromir a hairy viking :D

  • @andrielisilien i lolled at the "oooh im gonna smack you so hard" moment more loL xD

  • i thought the horse died on the beggining but then it comes back

  • laziest animation ever

  • were is tom bombadil?

  • 1:10 gandalf isn't obiwon nor does he pull off an obiwon...

  • Billy Barty's mannerisms are very much apparent in Bilbo from 7:15 to about 7:40. Also, @ 2:58, Frodo channels his inner "Aunt Esther".

  • @tyrongkojy if you think about it though. the books probably wouldn't be that good.

  • Bilbo's "O" face.

  • gondor has no pants...gondor needs no pants

  • why is the music in tense parts always major? It's kind of counterproductive.

  • Peter Jackson did an awesome job on the live action movies.

  • @tyrongkojy The eagles of ages past were incarnate forms of Maiar, similar to Gandalf and Saruman, and were the eyes of the Valar (the Eagles of Manwe). They would intervene only at the bidding of the gods. Part of the message of the entire story is that you can't always expect someone greater or more powerful than yourself to do what needs to be done, just like when Frodo tries to give the ring to Gandalf.

  • Gandalf sounds like Sir Alec guinnes... the first Obi-wan Kenobi

  • LOL =D 3:00 "ok you're allowed to speak, but don't start with the threats..." xD

  • The elf playing the harp at 7:05 gives me the creeps...

  • I like Froddo's expressions in this version. The animation is for the most part pretty clean, and the movement sort of reminds me of Don Bluth

  • Lol. Frodo was going to cream Bilbo if he touched the ring.

  • Bakshi certainly brings out the agony of being stabbed, or being in the "Ring" world.

  • The thing I never understood about LOTR is why Gandalf just doesn't ask his giant eagles in the first place to take Frodo to the volcanoe...does anybody know`?

  • @biertier99 At the council of Elrond, there were many suggestions for what to do with the ring (send it across the sea, drop it in the ocean, keep it hidden, etc.). This idea never came up, but if it had, I think it would have been rejected. Too risky. Mt Doom was guarded before Aragorn's armies drew them off, and an eagle would have been seen by Mordor. If anything had gone wrong with putting it in the fire, they'd have been caught immediately. The whole quest relied on secrecy above all.

  • 3:04

I find your lack of faith disturbing

  • Boromir looks like a viking.

  • @suokkis I know. Boromir:(In Scandinavian Accent) Halo! Mein name is Boromir! I come from Gondor to rape yer vvomen and eat yer lutefisk!

  • @Jakegothicsnake that's a mix of german and redneck accent... that's not a scandinavian accent. This is scandinavian(at least swedish accent): Hellow, may neim is Boromiir. I hav com to reip yor vemen and eet you lutfisk!

  • @Papadragon18 Well you're right on the german accent. I kinda mix them together on account of germany and scandinavia being relted countries. However I did not intend for it to sound anything like a redneck's accent. Your version does sound alot more accurate I'll give you that. :)

  • @Jakegothicsnake Well, I AM a Sweed, and hear alot of bad Swedish-accented english, so it commes quite natural. And btw, does the word "lutefisk" really exist in english? And the red-neck thing is mostly the "yers". And Scandinavia isn't a country. =) Scandinavia is a collective word for Sweden, Norway and Denmark. But you're right that the countries are related in language. Darn, I'm using alot of "and"s. =)

  • @Jakegothicsnake

We scandinavians doesn't really have a key-accent. I'm norwegian and my accent is very different than many other norwegians, due to my broad and distinct dialect which has affected my english.

"Hai dere. I møst apoligaise if mai æks'nt saonds diffikølt"

  • @Papadragon18 Hell with the women, let's rape the lutefisk

  • @PutItAway101 ALLRIGHT!

  • @Papadragon18 I am scandinavian, and that was a very good accent^^

  • @HenTodolo Thanka pal. So am I. =) Otherwise I wouldn't have been able to pull that off very good, hehe.

  • @suokkis omg i thought that since i was 8 xD

  • whoever did the art forthis movie is seriously amazing at capturing expressions. i love it

  • If only they had been allowed to finish this like the Jackson movies...it would have been almost perfect....the spirit of the books is in this....it was just before it's time....it's too damn bad.....I find this version profoundly stirring...

  • Mighty kind of them Nazgûl to stop crossing the river just as the river rose up. :D

  • @SyllaRa they fear water and even Tolkien never explained why....I assume it's because Ulmo lord of waters....the Vala....has power in water...and they fear it....kind of like how Vampires don't like holy water....

  • @Zatoichi444

Agreed...having the "Fear of Water" thing a bit more firmly established would have helped a lot....it's clearly inferred in the book, and in both bakshi's and Jackson's version....

And, having the undead fear running water is an age old ....legend thingy--appears in a lot of cultures. I personally like the idea of Frodo purposefully tempting the Riders to cross the River with the Ring....and thus the wraiths have a paradox of two rules they cannot disobey...

  • @Eldeecue Thanks for agreeing with me.....most people never do....lol.....

  • Boromir is a viking. AWSOME.

  • Way better scene in the animated vs. Peter Jackson's! And closer to the book

  • This part is way better in this version and very close to the book!!!!

I guess they had to give Liv Tyler a bigger role in the newer version?

  • Aragorn should look more like Elrond, and Elrond more like Aragorn (with a few adjustments to makke him less, you now, ugly)

And Boromir should probably at least wear a longer skirt

  • Jackson's version of this scene is an epic failure, substituting Glorfindel with Arwen.

It was Elrond who caused the river to surge towards the black riders while Gandalf added the white horses and riders on the crest of the surging river.

  • @chroniclerofthe70s

Agreed. Glorfindel is...kinda sadly doomed to never be really compatible with any film version they will ever make. Legolas being there makes a lot more sense than Arwen.

  • @Eldeecue Imagine how amazing it would have been if Jackson would have included Glorfindel, and been closely faithful to the Tolkien's trilogy. Those flicks would have left Titanic and Avatar in the dust.

  • @chroniclerofthe70s

I can only see such a faithful adaptatioin working as maybe a many hours long TV mini series type thing.....Glorfindel more or less shows up to help to Rivendell..then disappears forever...it just doesn't work in terms of a 2.5 hour long film, or even a trio of them.....

Btw...I just now noticed that whenever the nazghul are present, there's this unnerving, asthmatic wheezing noise in the background. I somehow missed it despie 23+ years of watching this movie.

  • @Eldeecue There is a BBC radio broadcast of the LOTR released in 1981. Its about 12 hours long. I only heard the beginning so i don't know if Glorfindel is included. As always, Tom Bombadil is left out

  • @Eldeecue but legolas didn't even live in rivendale! he loved far off in mirkwood, he wouldn't have been there, those stupid fools.

  • @AmericanHistoryLover

I'm talking narrative sense, and keeping the story tightly woven. A reason for Legolas to be there is easily fudged in.....keeping this thing sensical in terms of Tolkien's canon as if it's _absolutely_ writ in stone is a fool's errand.

The key to making any adaptation lies just as much with knowing when to stick with the original material as it does knowing when to break from it.

  • @Eldeecue

Why what changes were better than the book?

    examples please?
