Pre had a VERY high VO2 Max (aerobic capacity). An individuals VO2 Max can be improved pretty significantly with training but much of it is genetic. For the great majority of people running a 18 minute 5K for example is genetically impossible let alone 14 min and under for 5K.
Yeah the actors "form" is fine but regardless "good form" isn't something that is the same from one person to the next. Good form is running in line with how your OWN body-mechanics dictate how you should run. You should never try to emulate someone else's form. Run the way it's most efficient for your OWN body not someone else's.
@VirenKickedPresAss really? haha dude u must have no life. Do you like camp on every Pre video and bully and hate on Pre and his fans? Why can you respect both Prefontaine and Viren? They both are truely amazing runners and helped start the running boom of the 1970s.
Did Pre really look like that after running a race? I mean in this movie he walks upright without a problem after the race and can start jogging within 30 seconds. My best 5k time is a 19:02 and when I'm done racing I feel like I'm going to collapse and I can hardly walk because I'm hunched over puking and wheezing.
Those of you complaining about the main actor having bad running form apparently have conveniently forgotten that he is an actor and not a real trackrunner. His job is to get into shape well enough to fit the part, not to run the exact same way the real Steve Prefontaine did.
We watched this a lot in track and cross country practice haha. I was a lot like that, always front running. My event was the 2 mile. I had a race just like that and I remember when I went to the bathroom all the parents wanted to shake my hand and congratulate me on that "amazing race". Best feeling ever.
@misterfitz395 For you to say this, I really hope your form is near perfect, and I hope you've got some impressive track times. This actor's form is quite good; his arms never cross his body, he holds his hands loosely, and his head is even cocked slightly to the left as Pre did in order to see the clock.
@misterfitz395 The actor's form was fine. And anyway, Pre did not have near-perfect form, so it would have been inaccurate to portray him running that way. One of Pre's legs was about an inch longer than the other- so his body was incapable of running with even "very good" efficiency. What Pre had was a mountain of guts, and no quit in him. He didn't have the best genes on the field, but he worked the hardest- and he simply wanted it more.
@listerstorm239 That is horseshit, Pre had the best genes by far "on the field" (whatever that means). Look up what he did while he was at certain ages, it will show you how much genetic talent he had. It is stupid to say the other people in the field did not have as much "guts" as him, they either did not have the talent that he had or were not coached as well (or both). Once you get to that caliber of running it is not about guts, it is about training smart, hard, and some genetics.

To anyone who doesn't run, running 3 miles at that pace takes some serious badassery. Pre was great, huge inspiration to me.

Billy Crudup was actually a runner in high school and college. He trained for 3 months capatilizing on form and speed. His form is identical to Pre's
