I disagree. Look for a voice teacher who has a degree and a clear understand in VOCAL PEDAGOGY. Singing experience is not enough. Not everyone who can sing, can teach...
My main voice teacher did her doctoral research work under the famed otolaryngologist Dr. Van Lawrence, and I can tell you without a doubt that it is VERY dangerous to even suggest that a singer should just fall out of bed and start singing. A proper vocalise/warm-up routine is essential to preparing the voice for singing. Just as a runner must stretch before a sprint or a marathon, a singer must properly warm up the voice before singing.
What IS important is, for the students: does your throat feels 'funny' or 'tired' when you are done with your lesson? Do you have a sorethroat? Does your speaking voice gets higher by the time you are done with a lesson? Those are IMPORTANT questions to ask yourself, as a student. Again...just my 2 cents.
Just FYI....many sopranos are tought by Baritones....Tenors teach Sopranos and Bass.....you don't need to have a teacher that sings your same range...it has NOTHING to do with it. And yes.....technique is important.....and if your teacher is telling you to squeez your cheeks.....he's looking for a way to work things out. It has NOTHING to do with your butt.....but the result he/she is looking for. Singing is extremely subjective....and teaching singing is no exeption.

not after a lesson but my voice gets higher after a concert or after 2 hours of rehearsal, does it mean anything?
