i love this song , i once had it on my ipod then lost it and forgot about it. so today i found it again... so s os oos sos os haappyy.. The Wizard of Oz.. a classic...
@0perry00: Elphaba (whether done by Margaret Hamilton in the 1939 film, voiced by Tress MacNeille in the 1990's cartoon, or done by Idina Menzel in the Broadway musical "Wicked" [based off of Gregory MacGuire's 1995 novel...which kept true to the original Ozian canon by having Elphie actually die by liquidation, for the book was meant to be a tragedy, whereas the Broadway show--like all musicals--gave the tragic misfit a happy ending when she wasn't destined to have one]) rules, regardless.
In lament's terms, good or "wicked", Elphaba was MEANT to die (think Romeo & Juliet, with Fiyero & Elphie in the respective roles). To give her a happy ending--as the musical did--nullifies her purpose. In truth, her death gave life to others like her in Oz, such as her half-sister Nor and "son" Liir. But incidentally, if you read the sequel--Son of a Witch--it seems to indicate that ELPHABA LIVES on through the child of her son & Candle (as per the final line, "She cleaned up green").
It seems ironic then, that Baum based both *Elphaba* & Glinda on his sufferagist mother-in-law Matilda Gage, because whereas she was queen-like by those who knew her best (just like Glinda), Matilda's just fight for equal rights for women fell upon ignored ears at a time when white men dominated pretty every aspect of people's lives (similar to Elphie's own battle to protect sentient Animals) and saw her as a threat clad in black with a jutting chin and a wide brim hat (just like Elphie).
'Tis also ironic that LeRoy originally cast Sandergaurd as a glamous Witch (to trump 1938's Snow White), but was swayed by popular opinion supporting the "bad witches are ugly" stereotype found in every classic fairytale (including Snow White via the transformation scene), resulting in Hamilton--with Danko as her stand in--performing in the actual film, only have MacGuire give the Witch some beauty & a backstory when he penned "Wicked" in 1995 (which, in turn, spawned the 2003 Broadway musical).
When I saw the Wicked cover, my heart stopped for a second and my face LIT UP!!! Saying I am a Wicked Fan would be the understatement of the century! To me, Elphie is one of the most fantastical, wonderful, thrillifying, INSPIRING characters of all time!! (PS, just to clear something up, or else it will bug me forever, Elphaba wanted to save the Animals, not animals, silly peoples!)
@WizardOfOzfan94: WMG--Warner Bros. Music Group--would be on this in seconds if music from the actual film were used, because Warner *OWNS* the rights to the film (and has since CBS gave up rights in the 80's).
no she isn't! leave elphaba alone! she's actually really sweet. believe it or not, she was just trying to save the animals of oz, but the wizard didn't want that, so he declared her evil and all. and glinda the good was her best friend. (im sorry, i am obsessed with Wicked.)
i want to throw a brick at dorothy whenever i watch the wizard of oz, espicially during the melting scene. but i tell myself its ok and shes going to escape with elphaba.
I think Elphaba was actually more good than Glinda because she saved all the animals and declared the wizard to set them all free and had a concern for the whole of Oz. I too am obseesed with Wicked :)
Wizard of Oz I love too but it made me very sad after seeing Wicked because of how Elphie was portrayed :(
It really does change your view completely doesn't it?

I now understand Elphaba (Wicked Witch of the West) better after reading Wicked. Her life was unfair, and the atmosphere of Oz set her down.
