  • john wasnt techniclly the best player...but shit...he was very original,,,and creative...its not how many notes you play..its the notes that you play...

  • john was the first to,,strip the varnish off,,that casino..that made it sound different...any one who plays..knows that... it might not be the guitar that is off..it might have be the player...listen to the lead on get back...thats john.....actually he was going to..bring that guitar back to the original condition...{according to yoko},,,i think that epiphone was his other baby...

  • im buying this guitar soon :)

  • a good guitar player could play any guitar and make it sound good. jimi hendrix first guitar was a 1 string ukelele and i bet he good even make that sound good.

  • @epiphonelespaul4 oh just shut your bloody mouth up... John's first guitar was crap too... Do you think after 15, 20 years of professional playing, and being a millionaire (if not a billion), John would use a crap guitar just because he is a good guitar player. He's not that stupid. He bought that guitar 10 years before, used it live in '66, painted it's back, than got all the paint off. It's obvious the guitar isn't good anymore.

  • @mariane10121988 its not the fuckin guitar if your guitar has 6 strings you shouldnt have a fuckin problem i play an epiphone and theres no fuckin problem

  • I think he sums it up himself... "I just can't play it"

  • I doubt he ever had that thing set up. The action was probably really high.

  • I guess it left him crippled inside (!)

  • and yet epiphone sells them

  • is that George harrison playing John's sonic blue strat?

  • @TheGalwayFarmer Nope, John's sonic blue strat had a rosewood fretboard. As far as i know, John's Strat is missing. George also had a Sonic blue strat identical to Johns but george later gave it a Pshycadelic paint job and nicknamed it 'Rocky'

  • @ kithevideoman- stop showing off! (;

  • that commie should stop bitchin

  • This is awesome. I wasn't a John Lennon fan before watching this, but I am now.

  • @ABBABeatle Epiphones were built in Kalamazoo (probably spelt it wrong) Michigan during that time. Most notable for the blue oval sticker with the serial number & model, though some I believe are a reddish/orange sticker.

  • SOMEONE SHOULD SMASH HIM OVER THE HEAD WITH IT

  • Why does he look constipated

  • he'd had it years and it had been played for HOURS. It was probably fucked

  • he probably been recording for hours and needed a break....

  • @Gentilseulement "This guitar is just crippling beyond belief; i cant play it."

  • Remember, Give peace a chance John. Give peace a chance....

  • his casino is crippled inside ;)

  • @ABBABeatle -lol i know that, but compared to the gibson equivalent (es-330) it's an inferior instrument.

  • @ffairlane57 Yeah, it seems like The Beatles's sound was pretty coincidental....John saw the Rickenbacker on a jazz album cover, bought it, and went from there. Then they got free stuff from Epiphone, later Fender, etc.

  • nice drumming song

  • When the action is set too high, you have to apply too much force on the strings to get a good sound. This seems to be what John Lennon is complaining about here. Which is why he looks at his left hand.

He wouldn't have used it more than once if the thing was a piece of crap obviously.

  • @1After100 Agreed. Casino sounds a lot better with higher action. I usually like mine lower, but find the lower the action the less power to the sound. Also Lennon could've been complaining of the strings. When playing hollowbodies it's best to use medium to heavy gauge strings. Light strings sound weak on hollows....Anyways just my opinion as I own a Casino and have been messing with it for 15 years to finally get a tone I'm pleased with on it....

  • @HarryDickus actually all hollow body/ acoustic guitars sound better with higher action. The only draw back is that it's harder to press down and your intonation may suffer

  • @inkey2 I think my Gretsch has a nicer, more aggressive sound with lower action. But, then again, I don't play blues or country, nor are those my favorite genres of music. Opinions.

  • @1After100 he has been using a casino since 66 i think so that might be oe of his firsts

  • @nimrodguitarist96 John only had 1 Casino

  • I saw George!

  • Let's face it, he beat the living CRAP out of that guitar. He sanded it, dropped it, dinged it, scratched it, and I'm pretty sure i would be hard to play when it's all jacked up.

  • Who is this?

  • he's got blistas on hees fingas!!

  • @jsmcguireIII that was Ringo

  • Obviously a Fender guy.

  • @CoryNathanS That, Or he was being incredibly difficult in the studio. It tended to happen sadly :(

  • @4dscorp True, true.

  • @SocialVirus92

I don't think that he hated it at all because he used it for a long time before and after this session. It is just that in the process of recording, musicians might feel upset for not getting easily where they want to go, musically speaking, or for being uncertain about what exactly they want. So they blame the instruments sometimes. And this very shapeless effort at ''how do you sleep'' is enough cause for making someone upset.

  • @271189a i believe it was on the imagine john lennon docco but cant really remember its been a while since i saw it but it was movie length and really good

  • Should've used your sonic blue Nowhere Man stratocaster like that guy at the end of the video is using. C'mon John!

  • @SuperSonicJohnson you mean george harrison, johns friend and former band mate from the beatles?

  • @scarface12347 Is that George? It's hard to tell. Regardless, he should've used the stratocaster.

  • I read or heard somewhere that it was actually a brand new Sheraton that he used on the "rooftop" and sessions from that period and NOT his original stripped Casino !

Anyone hear of that ? ...maybe Guitar Player or Recording Sessions ?...or a full of shit salesman from the early 80's...it's been a long, long, long time.

  • @itsallrigid The guitar Lennon used on the rooftop and sessions such as this was his Epiphone Casino. It's very easy to identify it thanks to the P-90:s, the string holder and the headstock. The Sheraton didn't have those features.

  • @atticthoughts thanks for clearing that up, I never spent much time looking at the subtleties.

I used to have an Ibanez knock-off of something similar and wondered what it might have been copied from...

Didn't the Casino lack the solid block tail section ? I don't mean ' lack ' as in inferior at all.

  • @itsallrigid The Casino is totally hollow so no solid block at all.

  • Wtf are you doing John?! 0:07 got a bitch bendin over while you sing about how she can't sleep?

  • i keep thinking he's gonna hit his head with the microphone.

  • @vmanbeatles yes it was George

  • *Nod* Howwwwww do ya sleep ya cunt!

    hahahaha what a legend!

  • he had the dough, he could have gotten a really sweet gibson 335......Hey Bulldog!

  • @Heisenberg85 hahaha my thoughts exactly brother

  • HOW DO YA SLEEP YA CUNT xD

  • ...I think he means the guitar part, not the guitar itself?

  • anyone know what chords he's playin?

  • @Deel73 A minor and D Major.

  • he means that particular instrument dumbass not all casinos

  • I'm a little surprised he would track vocals and guitar at the same time in a multitrack studio.

  • @gwugluud The best way, otherwise it's just too processed and too layered. The more down to earth in the recording the artist is the more organic the sound will be, and it's the real sound of the member. Anyone can sing and track guitar over their vocals.

  • @gwugluud not necessarily tracking, could've just been a guide vocal

  • BUY A FENDER JOHN

  • @JayMalone He had a sconic blue strat (Just like the one you see george play at 0.39.. I think johns had a rosewood fretbard though) I dont think he cared much for Fenders

  • maybe he hadn't played a lot as of late . and he was out of shape slightly?. then trying to jump back into it , and fatigue kinda takes over the muscles and all

  • LOL

    0:33

'how do yuu sleep you cunt...'

    hahaha john

  • Don't blame me for this question, but, what song are they recording?

  • @stefarossi How do you sleep?

  • @stefarossi

How do you sleep a song with anger directed at paul

  • twas ringo who had the blisters

  • Was it Lennon who wanted humperdinkers in his Les Paul Junior? Case closed

  • thats the guitar he screams about at the end of helter skelter

  • The Rickenbacker V250 and this Casino were John's favorites. But was probably the Casino the one that he used steadily longer, and I understand why. it's not only that's a beauty but it is so comfortable to play. I have one and I enjoy every aspect of it, besides the fact that for what it is it's totally inexpensive.

  • John's probably complaining about his Casino because he was embarrassingly bad at guitar maintenance. When a guitar tech got a look at John's first Rickenbacker 325 to restore it he was amazed. John had been playing it with roundwound and flatwound strings of all different makes and gauges. Either he or Mal Evans just replaced broken strings with whatever they had lying around. If John had a proper set up and maintenance, his Casino would have played like a dream. None of the Beatles were very

  • @leapinlueschen Ringo actually said that I beleive on the 18th take of Helter Skelter.

  • just watch this if you want to buy this but is too expensive...

  • Why would John buy an Epiphone when he could certainly have afforded the Gibson version?

  • @MorroccoM13 epiphone's weren't always only copies of gibsons. Epiphone made quality guitars back then and still make a few high end guitars.

  • @thecapitolwasteland : I thought it was just a copy of an ES-335.

  • @MorroccoM13 The Casino is not a copy of the ES-335. Although similar in appearance, the ES-335 has a solid block wood center (among other differences, including humbuckers). The Casino is completely hollow and feature P-90 single coil pups.

  • @PayPclone > I took a closer look and I can see the differences. Thanks.

  • How da ya sleep ya cunt?

  • with all of the complaints, lol john mustve loved that guitar ,cuz he played the hell out of it, and george and paul both also played casinos ,we need John Lennon today,I still miss him

  • So many classics were played on that guitar. I'd love to own that

  • funny shit

  • You should watch Paul McCartney is Dead. It give you another view about Paul suing the Beatles

  • HOW DO YA SLEEP..... ya cunt?

  • @sparkytrick As it was meant for Paul. ;)

  • bro he didnt cut because of the guitar he called paul mccartney a cunt

  • dude wat is song

  • @kimjenkins123 It's called "How Do You Sleep" and it was written about Paul suing him George (who's in this video) and Ringo in order to end the Beatles' business partnership as it pertained to Apple.

  • The 5 people who clicked disslike, own an Epiphone Casino =)

  • 5 people have Epiphone Casinos =)

  • lol he had a casino since 66 and he just started to hate it

  • wat song is this??

  • @whoastupid It's called "How do you sleep" :)

  • Weak! Jazz cats play guitars with 13s and even 14s (George Benson) flat-wounds, and their playing is a lot more demanding than any of John's simple strumming.

  • @Hoopermazing Nots only jazz cats, a lot of people

  • @PBANDSNOW Perhaps, but it is the norm for jazz guitarists... and the crazy chord changes they play would be torturous with 8s.

  • @PBANDSNOW ...plus, jazz cats tend to like ridiculously high action.

  • @Hoopermazing why would "jazz cats" like high action? so their close chords can be ruined by terrible intonation? Low action is needed so that a string pressed down will be in tune with open strings. Heavier gauge strings excel and promote lower action as well.

  • @bbknux1 That all might be true, but as I said, jazz cats like very high action. It's a matter of tradition. They used to do it so that they could play hard enough to be heard in a big band setting. Also, heavier gauge strings actually don't facilitate low action (unless you're a kid playing an absurdly de-tuned guitar) in standard tuning larger diameter strings have a larger "oscillation amplitude," or whatever that's called. Ask a science teacher why, IDK.

  • @Hoopermazing And how quick do jazz players play? They never stay on a chord for more than a second!

  • @Hoopermazing Simple strumming?? On the surface, that is! Lennon had a very unorthodox style of rhythm playing

that no one could ever replicate. The Epiphone Casino that Lennon owned has seen more action in a lifetime than

your snobbery! (Due to touring years as a BEATLE & weather conditions, depending on which continent w/only 2 roadies & MAINTANANCE??? There was a MANIA going on,not much time to FIX!!!)So, yeah, the Casino

has seen WEAR & TEAR, enough for Lennon to complain & rightly so.

  • LOl at the guy sighing at the end

  • Comment removed

  • @vila37 actually, he says "crippling beyond belief"

  • what song is this?

  • A Casino is a great guitar, Fender strat is horrible. The first one is a beauty, the second one really ugly. But I do like Clapton.

  • @fred13400II you are not calling a strat ugly?! :O

  • actually what could be crippling john would be the strings

  • @petecatz epi's are sweet

  • sweet p90's

  • Seems as his Casino needed a setup. I have two Casinos, among many other guitars, and they're very easy to play, with a slim neck and low action. The Casinos are famous, not only because they're excellent sounding guitars, but because they are very comfortable to play. Any guitar in dire need of a setup will cause the reaction we're seeing here.

  • when a man could play a guitar while other 500 could't , he is a genius, when a man couldn't endure a guitar while other 500 could, THAT IS HIS PROBLEM!

  • WHAT SONG IS IT??

  • @wischkaun how do you sleep. its SUCH a good song! this is just a rehearsal so sounds a bit soft, but the real one is amazing

  • @wischkaun how do you sleep,he was refering to paul

  • @GalaxyHorse cream disbanded in 1968, the beatles in 1969. not a big gap there. according to sources, the best-selling album of 1968 was Jimi Hendrix' Are You Experienced?

internal tensions? many bands play for longer than 15 years, AC/DC, stones, dead, who, queen, U2, black crowes, etc. i'm arguing just what those tensions were, i.e., lennon felt the beatles were being surpassed, and alot of it had to do with the music paul was making. how do you sleep? just my opinion.

  • where is this footage from?

  • @LordEizen the movie "Imagine: John Lennon"

  • @kingfanboi i agree

  • He's not complaining about the make it's the action or height of the strings likely hurting his fingers maybe the neck moved with heat or cold or something.

  • @Sunambra I agree with you....I am a guitar tech and I used to have a 1960s epiphone casino in the 1970s. There is absolutely nothing wrong with the guitar itself, verey comfortable to play......his action was probably too high.....possibly John switched string gauges or the neck just needed the rod tightened

  • my friend richard thinks he so freaking smart!! but he's yealous!!! yealous of my WW ways mf! he's mad cuz his casino got jizzzzzacked in college but now i'm gunna buy one and show him how to play. and oh btw, he's been playing for over 20 years and i'm already better than him after only 6 months. go figure.

  • @maydecember513 ah.....I think I know that...hello

  • it probly just needed to be set up lol...

  • The song is called "How do you Sleep?"

  • What's the name of the song ?

  • The Stratocaster in George's hands is different from the Statocasters John and George have had before in '66. This guitar has a maple fingerboard, Those of '66 had rosewood fingerboard

  • @paul010155 GREAT catch, even though Im a drummer I caught George immediately but "I" made the error of thinking that WAS the 66 one. GOOD call

  • is this a jl song

  • What's the song called?

  • @TeaForOne97 its called "how do you sleep at night"

  • He probably just means his particular guitar, not the model. Understandable, really, since he played it so much. And I don't have much sympathy anyways; he's playing How Do You Sleep.

  • In the book Beatles Gear by Andy Babiuk one of the guitar techs that fixed John's first Rickenbacker in NY said that John didn't know anything about guitars or how to keep them in good condition. Maybe that's why the Casino is hard to play? No setup, intonation or anything in all those years?

  • @joseph60611 epiphone casino is great .so is john lennon.just one of those day's.people do have thier day's pyschological'may be or just hight as a kite

god rest your soul john antonio

  • @joseph60611 before I read your comment, I was thinking the same exact thing. xD

  • you can buy the whole guitar company..John

  • @joseph60611 Bazinga!

  • i like hearing that loud sigh right as he says "I can't play it"

  • Right at the end, you can hear someone sigh. I wonder what they said next?

  • damn! i love his guitar "Epiphone Casino" wohoo! john lennon let alive! hehehe

  • Happy Birthday John

  • Was he singing about Paul or Yoko?

  • @SotR59 paul

  • if John says the guitar is unplayable, im not buying!!!!!! XD

  • When you have John's bank account you change your guitar if you think it's crap

  • casino sounds shit crappy on this video...

  • I thought the Casino was the only respectable epiphone electric guitar

  • @defencewinsgames Casino, Sheraton, Riviera, Emperor, Wildkat, Zephyr regent, Broadway, Dot, Lucille.

  • he had to do a fret job, and he was having a bad trip, haha.

  • my freind has a caino it feels easy wen i play it

  • what does he mean by crippling?

  • @sacramentolove am I really? all he had to say, however submissive it was, at the news of John's death was good. and john wrote much more of Paul-bashing music after this. but paul didn't.

  • John lennon 4 ever

  • Well of course his guitar was crippling... He's been using it since 1968, and this video was recorded when? 1974? Maybe he used the same strings like from 1968?

  • @sacramentolove He used it since 1965,not 1968.It's the same guitar used for the1966 tour.He stripped down the original sunburst paint, but it's the same guitar.

  • @sacramentolove

    Actually, 1966 and 1971.

  • @Verbeke7 I remember now! He first used the guitar in 1966, in Japan. But after time he took the paint off,and took at pick guard off. Okay, thanks!

  • @hanoc101 I bet it was both! This is due to the fact, well I actually don't know, but I guess the Beatles had a guitar technician who'd maximize playability to John's or whoever's preference. What I want to know is why he's playing an Epiphone.

  • what's the music please?

  • @intilla1 how do you sleep

  • @sacramentolove thank you

  • @intilla1 np :)

  • Must be Lennon's sonic-blue Strat that Harrison is playing.

  • yes yes john lennon is a musical prodigy n legend. BUT am I the one that has to say this? He sounds like a strangling cat in this video. This is absolutely terrible singing, he can do way better than this

  • what song?

  • My guess he needs to become a luthier or take the Epi to one because I preffer the casino over my strat. Crippling is an illogical description for a guitar like that. But another thing is is that he hated the beatles after they broke up and of course that very guitar saw many beatles` albums.

  • :O did he say cunt?

  • john used mainly epiphone casino guitar or not?

  • lol HOW DO YA SLEEP YA CUNT!
