Robotnik was the name of Eggman's grandfather.

(Nobody knows who Eggman's father was, not even him.)

However, according to the original games (and continued on by the Archie comic), Eggman is Doctor Robotnik rebuilt as a human.

He eventually goes insane after Sonic defeats him for the last time, and Snively, who, I'm sure you remember from the old cartoons, takes over.

The Iron Queen(who I'm not familiar with) then ends up taking over the Eggman Empire.
