One of my all time favorite scenes from one of my all time favorite movies. Clint's line about "we all have it coming" illustrates that there is no clear cut good guy or bad guy in this movie. And when he says "it's a terrible thing to kill a man, etc" What a profound statement coming from a reformed cold blood killer like William Munny.
Thing I love about clints movies are they are soo real! like in the last scene where he goes to kill little bill his gun jams, in any other movie he would of blown away the whole bar with 2 bullets
To be honest my favourite part would be right at the end where Clint calls out to the street and says something along the lines of 'Any son'ova bitch takes a shot at me not only am I gonna kill him I'm gonna kill their wife and all his friends and burn his damn house down' cracks me up the every time I hear it...
I'm guessing the 11 people have never seen this movie, only this scene. They do not understand how powerful this scene is in this movie. This scene and the one with little bill, english bob, and the writer in the jail house. This scene takes the cake though.
"it's a helluva thing killing a man. You take away all he's got, all he's ever gonna have"
This line stuck with me more then any other the first time I watched this. Great film. Eastwood is the man!
It really is a beautiful scene with that amazing scenery, Eastwood doing his trademark stare with that sky in the background. "It's a hell of a thing killing a man. Take away all he's got and all he's ever gonna have" The kid's acting is great too. Very powerful.
The title (unforgiven) many of us just pass it without question. What was unforgiven in this movie; was it Will's bad temper, his history or the town folks treatment of the prostitutes. the ultimate unfogivable thing to Will was the torture and murder of NED it makes you believe that whether you are a cold blooded killer or a factory worker; true friend is worth dying for.
@lHlAlTlEl Gay? You really are detached from reality aren't you. Do you realize that during many of the recent wars that have been fought over the last 50 years that the majority of soldiers didn't shoot to kill, they aimed their rifles much higher than their supposed intended target and purposely missed. The best part of any movie is listening to the reality of death and not just passing it off as tough if you shoot and kill someone. You sir are a mindless fuck wit!
Wasn't this movie had something to do bout Clint being Josey Wales when he was younger..u know being a cold blooded killer in his younger years...sure looks like it!!
I studied this movie in my movie criticism class. I'm glad I did. I saw this movie before the class but I never really sat down to analyze it. This is a great movie. And a classic scene.
When this film was made I wasn't sure if it would be up to much... It's my favorite western.... This scene is Class, I love How it draws you in and makes you listen
The way the whiskey gently rocks back and forth in the bottle as starts to drink. You can truly feel there's a shitstorm brewing and it's not gonna be pretty...
Yeah, I like that. A lesser director would have had a close-up on the bottle. Love the litttle shiver on William Munny's face when he takes the first couple drinks. I'm BrianC also.
Very deep eye opening part of the movie, It makes me think of my great grand father, whom shot and, killed a man in a quick draw and, put his guns in a closet for the rest of his life.
Isn't life strange? All the events depicted in the movie-all the character's lives altered forever-everything can be traced back to the fact that Quick Mike had a "teensy pecker"! If he would have had a normal-sized penis, Delilah never would have given that little giggle that set all the wheels in motion. It's a funny notion-but it is also quite true...
@stratman123 true that, life is never epic and monumental. you can get killed walkin your doggie! sometimes people get killed taking a shit, or cutting their finger on a can of tuna, and not even Chicken of the Sea. Life is absurd, and sometimes the only thing men kill over is related to their penises.
@nickma71 Know what I think? I think 7 people were the ones who killed Ned. I say we kill 'em, and kill their wives...and burn their damn house down. Tell 'em they better bury Ned right...
Fantastic movie and great scene. Only I would have kept it going a few more minutes, though Ned's Not Dead and all. WHEW! You can just see the anger rising in Will then. Stand back!
But man is this good. No music, just wind. The Kid being all emotional and telling the truth and Eastwood standing still, almost emotionless, and answering in hardly a handful of words.
Kudos to Jaimz Woolvett for pulling off an excellent performance in the midst of a cast of Hollywood heavyweights. This scene in particular was outstanding and the core of a great story. Easily one of the best movies of all time, and THE best western ever.
before i ever paid attention to movies, and appreciated it as a fine art i watched this movie and this scene blew me away not even knowing why, as i got older and watched so much of the trash that is put out i understood
There won't even be another Clint Eastwood. It's amazing we get to have these stars from the golden era. Kind of like action movies will never get another Arnold. Clint is the master of one liners that define a flim.
that kid in the movie with Clint Eastwood was like the only white character in "Dead Presidents"....he was a Lieutenant in Vietnam...he did a great acting job, too...he tried to front like he was a tough guy who killed people but then once he did he started crying like a bitch...
we studied this scene in my media class. I watched it and analysed it about 20 times. Literally. And im still not sick of it. Love all the symbolisms and the internal conflicts. I love the Kid character. He is portrayed so well, how him being short sighted is merely a symbol/reflection of how he cant see the big picture and is pretty much a Kid figuritavely, thinking killing is an achievement, but soon he realises otherwise.
One thing I always loved about Unforgiven is how Will goes from being this reluctant, reformed guy with a past to a wicked S.O.B. in no time flat as soon as he finds out someone killed his friend. This should go down as one of the greatest character study films of all time. Eastwood and Freeman at their best.
The first movie I ever seen in a movie theatre was "American Grafitti". I was 13. I walked out of the theatre like I had taken something with me and through the years every now and again it still happens. This was one of those movies.
the girl coming from the town implies ...you know ..."it"..You may forget history but it never forget you ever. All americans have it coming...that makes your county LEGEND. God bless us all.
Christian I have to disagree with you, Unforgiven beats the Wild Bunch by a mile.I mean the friendship between Clint Eastwood and Morgan Freeman is is so strong that Clint goes back into town even after he has been paid for the killings. Just to get revenge for the killing of his friend. Now how much stronger does a friendship have to be.
@Chance7137 What about the friendship between the gang for Angel. The gorch brothers wanted to shoot him at one point. But it was Pike who reminded them that "When you side with a man you stay with him. And if you cant do that your like some animal." They too had their money, and could have left. But they would rather die fighting for their man than live and walk away.
Best western ever made hands down. There had never been a western made at this level and it was so real.It will go down in history as a one of a kind movie.
@Chance7137 Well i love unforgiven. But i cant give it the title of best western ever made. I think that title goes to The Wild Bunch. However Unforgiven is one of the best westerns, and one of the best movies of all time. I suppose the reason i put The Wild Bunch over Unforgiven is the sentimentality of it. Just watch the 'La Golondrina' sequence. Its a beautiful film about friendship, the end of an era and life itself. However, Unforgiven is right up there with it.
This is the film where Eastwood puts it all together and redeems himself for what was previously a mixed bag output that never really soared. THIS ONE DOES!!
Clint Eastwood is an amazing actor. he is constanly cast as the biggest, toughest guy around, and there is a reason; he can convincingly oull off being more than human. i watch his movies, and he is just so naturally badass that it astounds me, Clint Eastwood is one of my favorate actors for that reason. he is especially good in this movie.
bfooter902 has it on the money. The scene is shot in a way that even if one were to not hear a word, they get that there is a darkness to the man, the world... Good clip, goondave.
still hard to believe that after all the other ones that clint eastwood's best western (yeah yeah i know "best western") came in the 90's. only a handful of movies in any genre since this one have been as good.
@sanddune ... Really?! ... Then Your Comment Must Be A CHEAP SHOT Right? ... Christ I Was Praisin' The Man! ... All Negative People Should Be Banned From The Internet! ... That's Right, I'm Talkin' 'Bout You SandDune! ... Go Do Somethin' Useful & Burn Off Some Of That Bile! ... Cut The Lawn Or Something!!! ... You Know What I'm Sayin'?!
All these new movies coming out today with their high cost special effects and explosions and none of them are even half as good as the old movies like this one.
Exactly right. This film is one of the all time masterpieces. No special effects. No spectacular stunts. No CGI. Just phenomenal writing, directing and acting.
Great sub plots going on here.. the Kid falling apart knowing he had killed his first man. Munny looking at him, almost in pity.. "take a drink kid.."The Gal, who was getting kind of sweet on Munny, now not even being able to look him in the face after learning what a monster he really was. Munny looking so hurt, when the Kid tells him, "I aint like YOU Will..", the life he had left long in the past reaching up from the grave and dragging him back... Just love this movie, one of my top 5
@goondave Thanks 4 posting the vid! Certainly one of my 2 favorite Clint Eastwood scenes of all time!!! The other being the clever, sly smile he gives to Tuco (Eli Wallach) at the end of The Good, The Bad and The Ugly as he rides off into the sunset!
@bfooter902 The most most powerfully predictive and subtle one may be when he takes that bottle. You know the old Munny is back and Hell is coming for dinner.
@bfooter902 all within 5 minutes, too! Don't forget the absolutely perfect scenery with them alone on an open plain, save for the single tree the Kid's sitting under
it's awesome how years after makin the best old school western TGTBATU clint came back and boom! made the best new school western which no one will ever top
Great movie - Despite his mass appeal and cult status, there are very few film makers who can boast a body of work of as consistantly high quality as Mr Eastwoods. Bravo!
The weather and the mountains create the perfect day/backdrop for this scene...beautiful high desert....

...and so who would you say is the better actor in this scene? (Hint: its not Eastwood)

"its a hell of a thing killin a man take away everythink hes got and all hes gonna have' probably my favourite line in a film ever and oh so true

bfooter902 has it on the money.

Somebody has posted this as their favourite scene in this film!
So I guess me trying to get Jaimz Woolvett
interested in a film project that a colleague of mine is trying to get off the ground is a good thing!
I love it when people recognise True Talent!
And it takes Talent To Spot Talent!!!
And Jaimz Woolvett is Truly Under Rated!!!

All these new movies coming out today with their high cost special effects and explosions and none of them are even half as good as the old movies like this one.

Good computers can't give you character driven movies/acting.
Computers will always be superficial.

@cylonmodelsix Yes and cows will propably never learn to fly. Why would you point out something so obvious?

@cylonmodelsix and i really love the music in this film as well ..but being a musician i find music can really make a movie better imho

@cylonmodelsix

Top comment... amazing film. As you so, so many sub-plots. Very complex....
lukequixotesanjose 1 year ago
@bfooter902 The most most powerfully predictive and subtle one may be when he takes that bottle. You know the old Munny is back and Hell is coming for dinner.
drfittt 1 year ago
@drfittt "Hell is coming for breakfast" quote from Outlaw Josey Whales another great movie!

@bfooter902 The Gal who was getting sweet on Munny is the one with the cut face, not the one this scene.
Marianogf777 1 year ago
@bfooter902 all within 5 minutes, too! Don't forget the absolutely perfect scenery with them alone on an open plain, save for the single tree the Kid's sitting under

Great movie - Despite his mass appeal and cult status, there are very few film makers who can boast a body of work of as consistantly high quality as Mr Eastwoods. Bravo!
