Communism does not give incentives to the people to be better or to serve their country. And... look at Russia in WW2. The soldiers died for their country without hesitation or fear. The people rather died, than gave their country for the nazis.
Socialism were succesful. In the 70's, some early 80's.

@macee17 In Russia during WW2 people were fighting for Communism because of the government that existed before (it was MUCH worse than Communism). And you are partially right that most people don't need much more than food, clothes, and shelter but i love to have my electronics which are impossible to have in a Communism. Even Castro himself has urged citizens to work privately because Communism is unsustainable.

If you give incentives to people to become productive and to do the right thing more people will work and production and the economy will skyrocket (That's Capitalism). If you give incentives to people who CHOOSE to not work or harshly penalize those who do not comply with regulation less people will work and bickering will start and the economy will eventually collapse (Socialism).

@oiMikeyboy When you get welfare and only rich strata profits from it people demand reforms. Reforms for 14 hours, trinket wages and so on. When people can afford to have their basic needs for living they are more prone to think about social values, equality and democracy. So even if welfare does not directly influence people's opinions, it certainly does in an inderect way.
