I haven't played it yet (and maybe never will because I cant afford PS3) but clearly, the freakin' new game play is awesome! This time, proper skills are needed! Also, the story and places are vast but I guess also surprisingly little space to move and interact like other FF (e.g. FF10). Anyways,

Something I find with Final Fantasy games is how crucial the story is. I really liked FFX's battle system (probably one of the best in the series), but the design and story? Not at all. Don't kill me. XII on the other hand had an excellent plot (I'm a major Ogre Battle/Ivalice fan), but mediocre gameplay. Despite this I'll be picking up XII again, because the many cutscenes won't make me violently ill.
XIII was a step in the wrong direction - 'meh' battles and no escaping the story. Such a pity.

i dont remember anything that happened in the beginning of this game, which sucks because the ending starts to get boring.. farming for traps and doing missions...

Deffinitley had one hellova story but the lack of exploration and freedom kept me from loving this game. VII and VIII even VI all had awesome stories and didn't need to be linear to do so. Square Enix should learn from their past (square soft) to see that linearity is not required for an amazing story!
It definitely DOESN'T deserve all the criticism. Sure, the plot is linear, and it's different from the others, but that doesn't mean its BAD. Most people compare with FFVII, (never played it, but from what I know of video games) the definition of RPG is forever changing, and so are the Final Fantasy series. These days, most games are hybrids anyway. And the characters are deep, despite what everyone says. Whatever.

Just finished this 5 minutes ago and I can honestly say thiswas one of the best final fantasies I've played. The similarities to FFX are large but it just plays so damn easily that I couldn't put it down. Good story, characters avoided clichés like the plague so that was nice
Final Fantasy and it's gameplay,story,and plots are forever changing. If you're a fan of IV,V,VI,VII (well most hardcores are) then it's time that you grow up and leave the past behind...whether you hate the cheese on VIII or the lack of character development of Vaan on XII...real fans always find a way to enjoy every franchise and find ways to overcome the struggle of playing the hard bosses and progress on the game. Every one has their own story to tell.
Freaking loved this game! Squareenix out did themselves in this ff and everything about it was truly amazing. The only I didn't like was that they didn't incorporate the final fantasy fanfare that they play after all battles in the other final fantasies. Totally psyched for the next one :))))
This acctually suprised me but, this is my second favourite Final Fantasy game (Second to VII of course). I really cant understand why it has been criticised even by FF fans. This was a truly breathtaking game, the Graphics, the Battle system, the story, the characters, the near enough endless gameplay, just everything blew me away.
If your a "true" FF fan then you can see that this really is an amazing game, and I would say it returns to how Final Fantasy used to be...
i remeber my first playthrough of this game. I had finally defeated the last boss. I had done it. Looking at how much time i spent on it (125 hours) I was heartbroken as i hadn't even fully maxed out everyones skills. I played through it again, spending 140 hours this time and i still didnt have everyone maxed out. I havent completed another run yet and probably will not soon. Still an amzing game with a really in depth story and stunning graphics, but still 265 hours of my life gone -.-
@scenekissesrawr - PS3 is apparently higher-res textures/cut scenes over XBox 360, but I've only played it on the 360...am currently revisiting the game after 10 months away from it.
If you have both consoles, go with PS3 - unless you're an achievement wh0re and hate the trophy reward system.
I know people say that all you do is mash the x button, but aren't most Final Fantasy games like that? At least in my experience they were. This is how 97% of battles in FF games play out in my experience:
*Attack, get attacked, attack again, have fire casted on you, cast fire on enemy, use cure, attack, kill enemy, get experience, lather rinse and repeat*
Half of the time I don't even think about what I'm doing. I think Final Fantasy needs to move on from that style of gameplay.
I remember watching this trailer over and over and over again this time last year X3. It feels so good to know that I can now just walk upstairs to my room and just play on it lol.
Such a beautiful game, there's too many things to say about it lol (Mainly only good things in my eyes). I didn't really notice how linear this game was until my third time round. It got a little repetitive and straight forward, but it's still epic :3

By the way, I'm netural towards this game because I haven't played it, but I would definitely hope to do so eventually. I just had to get all of that off my chest because I'm so tired of people hating on something as trivial as a video game, one that seems to have a lot of misconceptions and exaggerations about its own flaws. I'm going to be perfectly honest with you guys, but there is a huge difference between valid, polite criticism and mindless hate. Much of what you see on youtube, forums, and articles is mindless hate. However there are some people who are very intelligent and express their points calmly and politely, even if they don't like the game or were disappointed.

The game itself was mediocre. Really you could finish it one handed. Which is good if your into heavy drinking, smoking or solving rubik's cubes one-handed. Doesn't take away from the story and that was entertaining and grand enough.

One of the most emotional games I've ever played. I'm a guy and I cry everytime I finish it. The only downsides are the lack of things to do after you finish it and the fact you've finished it. I could play this for weeks.
to be honest the gameplay was kind of a let down but the story (which is what SE is famous for) was Amazing! there were some very strong moments which I remember clearly but if you just want the gameplay i'd not reccomend this game, however. If you're looking for awesome storytelling... then GET GOING and buy this game!

This game was so amazing. It surprised the hell out of me how good it was after hearing all that bullshit criticism from morons. I'm thinking of playing it through for a third time, and it hasn't even been a year since it came out. Awesome characters that can really draw out the emotions. @elk832 Have you ever played Final Fantasy VI? I wanted Final Fantasy XIII to be good...but sadly it doesn't come close to the old Super NES Final Fantasy games. Basically anything after Hironobu Sakaguchi left isn't Final Fantasy to me. Final Fantasy IX was the last good one really. Final Fantasy XIII, like X, was way too linear. The entire game was a corridor that gave me little control over the battles. And the characters were nothing special. Typical JRPG characters.
Really? Typical JRPG characters? They were some of the most realistic characters in the gaming universe. Just look at how much love people have for their favorites and how much hate they have for the ones that annoy them. I have played VI and it's probably the worst of the good games in the series. Linearity is a piss-poor complaint for a game that is focused on story, and anyone that still hasn't figured out the battle system probably never will and is hardly worth talking to =\
@elk832 Whoa whoa, I wasn't trying to start a fight here. I got the battle system. It was a nice change of pace to have such a fast paced and truly Active Time Battle. All I am saying is that it wasn't my cup of tea. The characters were okay to an extent. Sazh was my favorite honestly. Have you ever played the Shin Megami Tensei games? Especially Persona 3? Those are my favorite characters in a role playing game. Honestly though, James from Silent Hill is my all time favorite.
@deusprogrammer sorry, I'm used to people being all up in arms when discussing FFXIII. You made it sounds like you were one of those players who failed to grasp the battle system and only used 2 paradigms the whole game. That pushes my buttons because, when mastered, it's without a doubt the best system in the series in my eyes. The characters might not be the best, but I stand by my claim that they are among the most realistic.
@elk832 It's alright. I understand. I can be rather jaded at times though, so I can understand if I came off that way. You have to keep in mind too that I am more of a retro gamer. I have a hard time finding modern games that I like.
Oh God, yes. I was so excited to see that trailer. And to hear that SE made the combat system even better made me drip with anticipation. The image of Lightning whipping out her gunblade from the trailer is my current background. Can't wait =D
@elk832 most of the criticism i heard was about the voice acting which in my opinion was brilliant. The graphics could not have been criticised. The story line however was very linear. It wasn't until the penultimate chapter that the game became very "Final-Fantasyish" in the sense that it was a brilliant way to grind and waste time. Other than that i can't find any faults with the game. It was absolutely brilliant. :D
To me, linearity is a piss poor point for criticism. I've always played every Final Fantasy straight to the last disc, and only then would I take the time to gather up ultimate weapons, max characters, etc. That's exactly how this game worked, and I was pleased. I also liked how you don't unlock the final stage of the crystarium until you beat the game once - that keeps people from making the final boss a joke the first time fighting him.
@elk832 i completely agree. Linearity keeps the game simple and in my opinion quite fun. The game opens up very well in the end of the game. What i meant in my comment was that most final fantasy games are very open from the start. I have no problem with it. I have loved the final fantasy series from FF1. I play it the exact same way as you do :D
@elk832 i really like this game too, i love all of the characters a lot. but i got to ch11 where you are in the field area i think and u just grind and do random missions and i think like a lot of people that part turned me off cause i was havign a blast up until that part. Yea, that's where the plot calms down some and the gameplay fully sets in. Only a few of the missions are not optional - they're mostly just there for after the story (or right before the end). There are some really good cutscenes throughout Pulse so it isn't devoid of story. You can always read the chapter summaries in the menu to get caught up on the story thus far.
@elk832 naa this game wasnt amazing it was good.. but same time a let down.. game was SO so linear it was untrue.. they might aswell have have ripped the point A to point B gameplay they had and pieced the cutscenes together to make a FF film like advent children. I myself am a FF fan... In my personal view the best FF games to date are 8 and 9.. since these games there has not been a FF that made me feel the Final Fantasy magic that these two games did. They have strayed too far from FF roots.
Sorry, but complaining about linearity falls under "bullshit criticism." You obviously won't feel the same way playing games over a decade later - far too much has changed. I agree that the PS1 era Final Fantasies have a certain charm that can't be emulated, but later games have their own amazing qualities that deserve just as much praise. It's a matter of being able recognize such qualities and accept their value despite their difference.
@elk832 If it aint broke dont fix it. It has nothing to do wether it being nex gen or not.. metal gear is a perfect example.. mgs1 thru to mgs4 kept the SAME formula.. why?.. because it works its what fans know the series for and why they love it. FF is no exception, the franchise is losing and will continue to lose fans until they bring back what made Final Fantasy masterpieces in the first place. Debate all you like but theres no denying the truth
It's still a story/character driven game with some of the most unique RPG gameplay elements available as well as the best visuals on the market. Sounds like everything that makes Final Fantasy great to me. What's changed is the people that play it, and obviously the presentation due to the technology available now and then. If you want to live in the past, be my guest, but don't bother criticizing current games. I will continue enjoying games that are JUST as great.

@elk832 Play through any other Final Fantasy and you'll find hours of content that have nothing to do with battling or furthering the story; that rather serve to flesh out the experience. Chocobo racing, Blitzball, Tetra Master, Chocobo Breeding, tower defense mini-games. Every other Final Fantasy has included a bunch of these features. Final Fantasy XIII IS a gross oversimplification of the franchise, and therein lies my issue with it. I don't think you can even "boil it down" further than that

@elk832 That's not what I'm saying at all. The minigames (among other things) break up the game into portions that go down much sweeter than when the game is served straight through. They create the impression that you're doing something different and make you feel like there's scale, contrasting epic battles with relaxing distractions. I love XIII, but you can't argue that it isn't ridiculously streamlined, hence my original comment.
This trailer did make the game look a lot better than it ended up being. I mean, the story was alright and all, I only really understood it after I finished it and read up on it some more. Since the actual in game delivery of the story is delivered so badly, it comes across as very patchy and convoluted. Once you know it all it's not all that complicated, but there are so many factors in it that don't really matter. Also, Cid, that woman and Hope's dad look like they'd be more prominent fromthis

More than just a game...but it is about the story of individuals with deeper conflict and how they develop into better persons despite of the world wishing their deaths.

Amazing game, amazing soundtrack, amazing graphics amazing story, FUCK!!!!!!! This game is EPIC. Final Fantasy 13 is the first game of the ff series that I have played, and it will by no means be the last. Kudos to Square Enix for their excellent work. I for one am looking forward to many successful future Final Fantasy games.

For me this was the best game I've ever played. I could understand the criticism it gets though for the linearity and etc. But for someone who really doesn't care and just wants to play a good challenging game I'd recommend it strongly.
@Mynameisjohnconnor i have to agree with you! though when i first completed it, i was hesitant on calling it the best game that i ever played, but once i 100%ed it, during the last cutscene, i realised that i didn't have a proper reason to play the game again, and it made me feel quite melancholic :(, which no game i have ever played has made me feel and which is why i rate it so highly. despite its harsh criticism, its a hugely enjoyable game to play and a fantastic experience too :)

@Sickoflifebandleader everyone trash talks every Final Fantasy whenever it's out for the first year.... it's normal. But all of them are fantastic. I'm so glad you're getting it! Make sure Auto Battle is turned off, and be aware of the "repeat" command, use libra in battle for every monster, and read the datalogs and turn on subtitles for full enjoyment of the game! :D You don't have to follow this but I'm just recommending it to you. I hope you have a lot of fun, screw haters!
@BloodStainedSand Of course you would know that Versus XIII, that hasn't come out yet, and you have no experience playing, is so much better than this game. Is your evidence from trailers? You know what other game had good trailers? Final Fantasy XIII.
@mandarinduck I prefer the Real-time gameplay over the Turn-based. And Versus XIII is graphically superior in both In-game and C.G.I. all Versus XIII needs is a better story and it will be the last nail in XIII's coffin!

And then there's the missions and trying to collect all of the items... sounds challenging to me X3

This acctually suprised me but, this is my second favourite Final Fantasy game (Second to VII of course). I really cant understand why it has been criticised even by FF fans. This was a truly breathtaking game, the Graphics, the Battle system, the story, the characters, the near enough endless gameplay, just everything blew me away.
If your a "true" FF fan then you can see that this really is an amazing game, and I would say it returns to how Final Fantasy used to be...

i remeber my first playthrough of this game. I had finally defeated the last boss. I had done it. Looking at how much time i spent on it (125 hours) I was heartbroken as i hadn't even fully maxed out everyones skills. I played through it again, spending 140 hours this time and i still didnt have everyone maxed out. I havent completed another run yet and probably will not soon. Still an amzing game with a really in depth story and stunning graphics, but still 265 hours of my life gone -.-

@scenekissesrawr - PS3 is apparently higher-res textures/cut scenes over XBox 360, but I've only played it on the 360...am currently revisiting the game after 10 months away from it.
If you have both consoles, go with PS3 - unless you're an achievement wh0re and hate the trophy reward system.

I know people say that all you do is mash the x button, but aren't most Final Fantasy games like that? At least in my experience they were. This is how 97% of battles in FF games play out in my experience:
*Attack, get attacked, attack again, have fire casted on you, cast fire on enemy, use cure, attack, kill enemy, get experience, lather rinse and repeat*
Half of the time I don't even think about what I'm doing. I think Final Fantasy needs to move on from that style of gameplay.

I remember watching this trailer over and over and over again this time last year X3. It feels so good to know that I can now just walk upstairs to my room and just play on it lol.
Such a beautiful game, there's too many things to say about it lol (Mainly only good things in my eyes). I didn't really notice how linear this game was until my third time round. It got a little repetitive and straight forward, but it's still epic :3

By the way, I'm netural towards this game because I haven't played it, but I would definitely hope to do so eventually. I just had to get all of that off my chest because I'm so tired of people hating on something as trivial as a video game, one that seems to have a lot of misconceptions and exaggerations about its own flaws. Then again, I guess some people just don't have much better to do.

I'm going to be perfectly honest with you guys, but there is a huge difference between valid, polite criticism and mindless hate. Much of what you see on youtube, forums, and articles is mindless hate. However there are some people who are very intelligent and express their points calmly and politely, even if they don't like the game or were disappointed.
All I'm saying is don't categorize everyone who didn't like it as morons or haters. Some people are a lot more mature than that.

Gameplay meh, but a well crafted tale in a beautiful; if linear world. Always had to keep the sound down since I used the Vanille joygasm summon against those turtles and I didn't want everyone in the city thinking I was a pervert. I am, but still...

The game itself was mediocre. Really you could finish it one handed. Which is good if your into heavy drinking, smoking or solving rubik's cubes one-handed. Doesn't take away from the story and that was entertaining and grand enough.

One of the most emotional games I've ever played. I'm a guy and I cry everytime I finish it. The only downsides are the lack of things to do after you finish it and the fact you've finished it. I could play this for weeks.

to be honest the gameplay was kind of a let down but the story (which is what SE is famous for) was Amazing! there were some very strong moments which I remember clearly but if you just want the gameplay i'd not reccomend this game, however. If you're looking for awesome storytelling... then GET GOING and buy this game!

This game was so amazing. It surprised the hell out of me how good it was after hearing all that bullshit criticism from morons. I'm thinking of playing it through for a third time, and it hasn't even been a year since it came out. Awesome characters that can really draw out the emotions. @elk832 Have you ever played Final Fantasy VI? I wanted Final Fantasy XIII to be good...but sadly it doesn't come close to the old Super NES Final Fantasy games. Basically anything after Hironobu Sakaguchi left isn't Final Fantasy to me. Final Fantasy IX was the last good one really. Final Fantasy XIII, like X, was way too linear. The entire game was a corridor that gave me little control over the battles. And the characters were nothing special. Typical JRPG characters.

Just look at how much love people have for their favorites and how much hate they have for the ones that annoy them. I have played VI and it's probably the worst of the good games in the series. Linearity is a piss-poor complaint for a game that is focused on story, and anyone that still hasn't figured out the battle system probably never will and is hardly worth talking to =\

@elk832 Whoa whoa, I wasn't trying to start a fight here. I got the battle system. It was a nice change of pace to have such a fast paced and truly Active Time Battle. All I am saying is that it wasn't my cup of tea. The characters were okay to an extent. Sazh was my favorite honestly. Have you ever played the Shin Megami Tensei games? Especially Persona 3? Those are my favorite characters in a role playing game. Honestly though, James from Silent Hill is my all time favorite.

@deusprogrammer sorry, I'm used to people being all up in arms when discussing FFXIII. You made it sounds like you were one of those players who failed to grasp the battle system and only used 2 paradigms the whole game. That pushes my buttons because, when mastered, it's without a doubt the best system in the series in my eyes. The characters might not be the best, but I stand by my claim that they are among the most realistic.

@elk832 most of the criticism i heard was about the voice acting which in my opinion was brilliant. The graphics could not have been criticised. The story line however was very linear. It wasn't until the penultimate chapter that the game became very "Final-Fantasyish" in the sense that it was a brilliant way to grind and waste time. Other than that i can't find any faults with the game. It was absolutely brilliant. :D

To me, linearity is a piss poor point for criticism. I've always played every Final Fantasy straight to the last disc, and only then would I take the time to gather up ultimate weapons, max characters, etc. That's exactly how this game worked, and I was pleased. I also liked how you don't unlock the final stage of the crystarium until you beat the game once - that keeps people from making the final boss a joke the first time fighting him.

@elk832 i completely agree. Linearity keeps the game simple and in my opinion quite fun. The game opens up very well in the end of the game. What i meant in my comment was that most final fantasy games are very open from the start. I have no problem with it. I have loved the final fantasy series from FF1. I play it the exact same way as you do :D

@elk832 i really like this game too, i love all of the characters a lot. but i got to ch11 where you are in the field area i think and u just grind and do random missions and i think like a lot of people that part turned me off cause i was havign a blast up until that part. I really want to go back and finish it cause i wana see how it ends, im just afraid im forgotten whats happened so far =( lol

Yea, that's where the plot calms down some and the gameplay fully sets in. Only a few of the missions are not optional - they're mostly just there for after the story (or right before the end). There are some really good cutscenes throughout Pulse so it isn't devoid of story. You can always read the chapter summaries in the menu to get caught up on the story thus far.

@elk832 naa this game wasnt amazing it was good.. but same time a let down.. game was SO so linear it was untrue.. they might aswell have have ripped the point A to point B gameplay they had and pieced the cutscenes together to make a FF film like advent children. I myself am a FF fan... In my personal view the best FF games to date are 8 and 9.. since these games there has not been a FF that made me feel the Final Fantasy magic that these two games did. They have strayed too far from FF roots.

Sorry, but complaining about linearity falls under "bullshit criticism." You obviously won't feel the same way playing games over a decade later - far too much has changed. I agree that the PS1 era Final Fantasies have a certain charm that can't be emulated, but later games have their own amazing qualities that deserve just as much praise. It's a matter of being able recognize such qualities and accept their value despite their difference.

It has nothing to do wether it being nex gen or not.. metal gear is a perfect example.. mgs1 thru to mgs4 kept the SAME formula.. why?.. because it works its what fans know the series for and why they love it. FF is no exception, the franchise is losing and will continue to lose fans until they bring back what made Final Fantasy masterpieces in the first place. Debate all you like but theres no denying the truth

It's still a story/character driven game with some of the most unique RPG gameplay elements available as well as the best visuals on the market. Sounds like everything that makes Final Fantasy great to me. What's changed is the people that play it, and obviously the presentation due to the technology available now and then. If you want to live in the past, be my guest, but don't bother criticizing current games. I will continue enjoying games that are JUST as great.

@elk832 Play through any other Final Fantasy and you'll find hours of content that have nothing to do with battling or furthering the story; that rather serve to flesh out the experience. Chocobo racing, Blitzball, Tetra Master, Chocobo Breeding, tower defense mini-games. Every other Final Fantasy has included a bunch of these features. Final Fantasy XIII IS a gross oversimplification of the franchise, and therein lies my issue with it. I don't think you can even "boil it down" further than that

@elk832 That's not what I'm saying at all. The minigames (among other things) break up the game into portions that go down much sweeter than when the game is served straight through. They create the impression that you're doing something different and make you feel like there's scale, contrasting epic battles with relaxing distractions. I love XIII, but you can't argue that it isn't ridiculously streamlined, hence my original comment.

This trailer did make the game look a lot better than it ended up being. I mean, the story was alright and all, I only really understood it after I finished it and read up on it some more. Since the actual in game delivery of the story is delivered so badly, it comes across as very patchy and convoluted. Once you know it all it's not all that complicated, but there are so many factors in it that don't really matter. Also, Cid, that woman and Hope's dad look like they'd be more prominent fromthis

Final Fantasy 13 is the first game of the ff series that I have played, and it will by no means be the last. Kudos to Square Enix for their excellent work. I for one am looking forward to many successful future Final Fantasy games.

For me this was the best game I've ever played. I could understand the criticism it gets though for the linearity and etc. But for someone who really doesn't care and just wants to play a good challenging game I'd recommend it strongly.

@Mynameisjohnconnor i have to agree with you! though when i first completed it, i was hesitant on calling it the best game that i ever played, but once i 100%ed it, during the last cutscene, i realised that i didn't have a proper reason to play the game again, and it made me feel quite melancholic :(, which no game i have ever played has made me feel and which is why i rate it so highly. despite its harsh criticism, its a hugely enjoyable game to play and a fantastic experience too :)

@Sickoflifebandleader everyone trash talks every Final Fantasy whenever it's out for the first year.... it's normal. But all of them are fantastic. I'm so glad you're getting it! Make sure Auto Battle is turned off, and be aware of the "repeat" command, use libra in battle for every monster, and read the datalogs and turn on subtitles for full enjoyment of the game! :D You don't have to follow this but I'm just recommending it to you. I hope you have a lot of fun, screw haters!
