Honestly, I am French, and even if this movie is one of the best translated Disney movies, I find this song very weak in French. Mostly due to the lack of proper and simple translation to "Outcast", which was a perfect word to build the English sound around.
it really dissapoints me that all over the western world (especcially in europe) that everyone is becoming athiest. infact there are more christians/catholics in india, china, and in lebanon combined than in europe alone
@lilguy1171 I actually heard that Europeans confused why my country's Catholics (Indonesians) and many other Catholic people in Asia actually attend Sunday Mass regularly -_- I even heard that most European Catholics only attend Mass at either Christmas or Easter -_- very strange indeed...
@kashiwamizu It's because some people are forgetting their nation's history and politics is driving everyone crazy. Also, nowadays more people are more concerned about what they want rather than what they need. It's now all just materialism and forgetting about others. Maybe you should tell some of those people that regular attendance does not make you strange and have them look at themselves at times.
I know not,Lord, if these words will rise up to heaven, if you will hear up there this humble appeal. I, the outcast, the impure, the gypsy, in you I still hope for at the heart of Notre Dame the exiles have right to...Love.Protect, my God, the unhappy. Illuminate the misery of lonely hearts. No soul but me will hear them if you remain deaf to beggars of love. I want gold. I want glory.I want my memory to be honored someday. Make people love me, Immortal God.We beseech your grace oh eternal king.
I like the surprise that he creates when she says "car dans le coeur de Notre Dame les bannis ont droit d'a... mour" ( "the outcasts have right to love", right to be loved, say) . Before she finishes her sentence, you expect her to say "droit d'asile" (right to asylum) and then she says "amour" and at that very moment quasimodo looks up with dismay because he hears her prayer.
@sighcantthinkofaname You should have only one reason for preferring an English version anyway: the fact that you speak English. Because eventhough the song was written in English in the first place, in other languages, it is not just translated, a song is written too. The lyrics in French are often so different (while conveying the same idea as in English) that I reckon the French just read the English version once and then throw it away... kind of.
@Juliesimba Well, I think the origional often sounds better because the words fit better. They do a great job "rewriting" the song, but sometimes it doesn't turn out too well. This one turned out great, but some songs don't translate well. For example, I don't like Topsy-turvy day in french.
So, I understand what you're saying, I just don't agree entirely.
@sighcantthinkofanameThat's probably because you don't understand what Clopin is saying (unless you actually do ? ). The words fit the rhythm and the rimes and vocabulary are rich...
Besides, when indeed the original song is supposed to sound the best, I often find other versions more beautiful. For example "You think the only people who are people are the people who look and think..." in Pocahontas. 3 times "people" ... come on...
@Juliesimba Yeah, I think we're just going to disagree here. I'm thinking the rhythm more than the rhyme.
I like the line from Pocahontas actually, it's interesting. YOU THINK the only PEOPLE who are PEOPLE, are the PEOPLE, who look and THINK like YOU. It's sort of a mirror effect.
@sighcantthinkofaname Right, I see. In French, we don't use so many tautologies, because it sounds meaningless. For example "I want something that I want", from Rapunzel, sounds stupid to me. Sorry... So I guess we can't agree indeed. But I understand better your point of you now.
@kiwillamas :D If is real.. Snow White will be sing in German, Cinderella too, Aurora in Italian, Ariel in Danish, Belle and Esmeralda in french, Jasmine in arab, Pocahontas in native american language, Mulan in Chinese,Rapunzel maybe german or french, Tiana is the only who sing english xD
@RoseDelfineValentine Actually, Cinderella is very much french, being based on the Perrault version of the Fairy Tale, not German at all. And Arab isn't really one language, there are dozends of languages which are put under the name, but the speaker wouldn't even understand each other.
Je pense que cette chanson est plus jolie en français que en anglais o espagnol. (Je suis espagnole). C´est une de las meilleures chansones de disney, mais personne ne le savent pas. ;-)
@hudson0815 I'm French and I truly love my language, so I am really glad that you think this way, but I don't completly agree with you, 'cause I think that English is really beautiful too ! Just like I think Italian is another beautiful language, (well, I'm Italian too !). I just wanted you to know that you can be proud of your language, it really is beautiful.
Well, I hope that I haven't made too much errors, I am not really good in English, I still have a lot to learn !
Thanks for your kind words, but Im german actually, so I dont know if you would say the same thing about german :D I could completely understand it though^^ And yes, Italian is very beautiful too.

trp belle! à mon avis, cette chanson doit être chanté en français, car l'histoire se passe en France! La femme qui chante cette chanson a une très belle voix! :o :)
hehe, I loved your translation in the description...^^ . Anyways, it reminded me of old times, when I would watch the VHS in french, so thx for posting :)
@losingmymind611 I don't know I think French being in it's very essence a Romance Language shows how much emotion it carries. It's the very intonation& phonemes in Fr. that carries the emotion rather than in English& other languages with a large amount of Germanic descent it is left to the speaker to dictate the level of emotion. Apathy is often rife in Eng. & is often acceptable because of the social environment. You can't say a Fr. utterance in a monotone voice without sounding strange.
@bluesock99 Probably because it IS a french story, the french know how to bring true emotions into animated pictures too. Try watching the Lion King in french dub (with or without subs, choice is yours) or any other Disney movie, you'll be very surprised how good it is, it's magnificent. Good luck to you.
@bluesock99 its cause French is a more diverse language than English. I grew up in Quebec, where we have French and English, and I honestly think French is much more graceful and beautiful.
I would like a sub and trans! It's always fun to see disney songs in the language he persons would have spoken. like this in french, the little mermaid in danish a.s.o
i love thins version and this language. i can speak it, but i'm a beginner. btw i can't wait October when i'll stand just in front of Notre Dame. i think i'll print this lyrics and sing it when i'll arrive into France. ^^
I love the french language, i think it's the most beautiful language in the world, also. i began learning it almost half a year ago, but then i was switched into spanish and couldn't switch back. :S
I think that "terrible" can mean both good and bad in French...it's very confusing! it's like the word "egregious" in English (it means both "outstandingly bad" and "remarkably good.")
@Chizpurfle52595 Doesn't "terrible" mean, like, terrific in French? XD "Pas terrible" means "not very good", I know... Lol... "C'est terrible" would mean "It's fantastic", or something to that effect...
@sairashadow I thought Pas mal was "not bad"? I actually got into a debate with my friends about this and we consulted our French teacher, who said it was very dependent on context, and could mean either... After looking at this again, I think it is a cognate in this context after all. :) So, yeah, you're probably right, "terrible". (Translation or no, I think this is one of the most beautiful versions of this song. ^^)
@sairashadow When you say that something is 'pas terrible', you basically imply that it's not that good. Like, it could be much better - but still needs a lot of work. (I am french but this is the kind of things I rarely translate so...).
Do you prefer to have the English lyrics or the translation of the French lyrics up there? Because what you have now is a translation of the French, and it's the same basic idea as the English, but many of the words are different. I'm surprised NobleRedFox could sing the translation. It must have been very difficult to handle the timing.
I prefer to have the translation, because most people looking at this video are native English speakers who have already heard the original English version, and in addition to hearing this song in another language, they might like to know what the words mean, since there is always a slight change in meaning in translation in order to have the same number of syllables and rhyme in the second language.
I love this song!!! and thank you for the lyrics and the traslation! Me[i'm a guy] and my friend[whose a girl] sang this at our schools talent show!! she sang the french lyrics and i sang your translation. We one first prize and got a standing applause!!! people were crying!! Thank you so much!! btw im a Chistian-Witch and my friends a catholic for info on what i mean by Christain-Witch look at my profile. again thank you !!!!!
I love all the people who are like, "I love that it's in french, since that's where this movie takes place."
It takes place in French?
But aside from that slight grammatical error, it is nice to hear a movie that took place in France in French. She has a nice voice. Thanks for posting!
Very pretty but lacks the emotion of other versions.

European Portuguese is almost the same as good as the french. I think french is better because, after all, this movie is in France xD

I truly love the French version of this song- it exhibits such powerful emotions, and it is the best version that I have heard.
However, this song has one of the most beautiful messages, so I still love it in English.
MantisSage 3 years ago 3
Absolutely beautiful! Given the story/setting of the film, it's only right that the french version be this good!

@Chizpurfle52595
there are some mistakes.
"God Immortal" = "God, the immortal (one)"
"O King Eternal" = "O Eternal King"
"Our Lady" = "Notre-Dame". (This is a proper name, not the title of Blessed Virgin Mary.
neosword01 1 year ago
@Chizpurfle52595 Doesn't "terrible" mean, like, terrific in French? XD "Pas terrible" means "not very good", I know... Lol... "C'est terrible" would mean "It's fantastic", or something to that effect...
Elliegirl95 1 year ago
@Elliegirl95 Actually, Pas terrible means "Not bad." So, in all honesty, C'est terrible means It's terrible.

Elliegirl95 1 year ago
@sairashadow When you say that something is 'pas terrible', you basically imply that it's not that good. Like, it could be much better - but still needs a lot of work. (I am french but this is the kind of things I rarely translate so...).

Do you prefer to have the English lyrics or the translation of the French lyrics up there? Because what you have now is a translation of the French, and it's the same basic idea as the English, but many of the words are different. I'm surprised NobleRedFox could sing the translation. It must have been very difficult to handle the timing.
Ekreagan 3 years ago
I prefer to have the translation, because most people looking at this video are native English speakers who have already heard the original English version, and in addition to hearing this song in another language, they might like to know what the words mean, since there is always a slight change in meaning in translation in order to have the same number of syllables and rhyme in the second language.

I love all the people who are like, "I love that it's in french, since that's where this movie takes place."
It takes place in French?
But aside from that slight grammatical error, it is nice to hear a movie that took place in France in French. She has a nice voice. Thanks for posting!
