He did not drop a stick. I think his kick pedal malfunctioned, when the kick stopped sounding, he looked back astonished, then reached down to fix it.
I've watched many pieces with Stewart drumming and the over-riding impression i get is that he just 'feels' the rhythm, beat whatever, instinctively knowing which piece to play next. It's as natural as breathing to him......
One of my all time fav drummers. Great tecs and vocabulary and feel. He mixed unexpected styles and together with 2 other fantastic musician/artist created a very unique sound.

jeez, if that's what his monitor mix sounded like, that was SHIT! you couldn't hear anything but drums, a tiny bit of bass and guitars, and a tiny tiny tiny bit of vocals.
He is hitting his video camera remote switch. This clip actually spans a few different shows. It is from Stuart's DVD "Everyone Stares: the Police Inside-out" which is a great watch for musicians or Police fans.
Any delay would be controlled by the FOH engineer, and Stewart just plays along. Drummers are already to bust to play with FX pedals.
but not too busy to play with video cameras? i've run sound for drummers with their own effect pedals - usually flange or delay on the HH mic. just put the pedal next to yr HH foot then :off/on.
i'm a big fan - i'll def look for that DVD. thanks for enlightening
Stewart was always about the percussion and less about the FX.
The DVD is a great window into the storm that was The Police on tour, and his new book "Strange Things Happen" is an accord of what he has been doing since. I just finished it and recommend it highly. He goes into great detail about the reunion tour and The Rythmatist days.
@sodderboy i heard hes got a little pedal to turn on and off delay. its a combo of both i think of him having a pedal and a guy backstage. but yea u can tell that maybe when he switches to snare he turns the echo off with his left foot so thats why he plays with the hi hat open
What a technitian on the drums.

I was told by two different highly skilled drummers that "Copeland is one of the very best." I tend to agree.

He sounds like a talking drum: totally awesome, especially his rythm, timing, and power-just completely rocking.

deftly does NOT drop his stick -- he leaves it sitting on his snare!!! maybe he's adjusting the delay he's riffing against?
johnmkmu 2 years ago
its all delay in it...I remember an interview with him in MD magazine ,how he would time out the rim shots to the delay...crazy
