@televisewhatyouwant It's a song that Guy Garvey wrote about a childhood friend of his who died of a disease (not sure if it was cancer, can't rememeber) not too long before they started producing Seldom Seen Kid. The shoulder charge is exactly that. It's referring to play-fighting. =) The main lyrics of the song "Love you, mate." was how Guy and his friend would say goodbye to one another.
@televisewhatyouwant What 50033836 said is very true, although that particular lyric I understood personally as being about friends shouldering the weight for each other, like not making each other pay, being their for each other. Just my personal reading, I don't know Guy's intentions
"Salford skyline gloom, always you, could fly round any corner, but til you doo, love you mate"
^^^^^ never fails to give me goosebumps, such a sad but beautiful song, thanks for this Elbow, your music means the world to me, you have no idea the kind of emotions i've felt from listening to your songs.
Przywołuje wspomnienia bolesnych i trudnych chwil, które ciągle są w nas i z których nie da się uwolnić... Tylko ona towarzyszyła mi wtedy i tylko przy niej nie muszę ukrywać łez...
I mean, these songs are beautiful, and i do mean beautiful.
But i just like grounds for divorce, possibly because it was in Left 4 Dead, it how I was introduced to Elbow, but currently, they are the most listened to thing on my iPod, I just love that song
depression simplified beautifully Lyrics to Friend Of Ours : Before leaving get to the bar No one round here makes you pay Never very good at goodbyes So gentle shoulder charge Love you mate Love you mate Salford skyline gloom Always you Could fly round any corner But until you do Love you mate
Guy Garvey has a rare voice, his talent in singing alone TRULY towers far, far, far above and beyond these talentless moron "rappers" who are self-proclaimed "thugs".
dont get me wrong, hes a good singer, but you cant compare the singing of one genre to the lyrics of another. theyre completely different things, whose only relation is the fact that the music comes from the mouth.
The lyrics Before leaving get to the bar No one round here makes you pay Never very good at goodbyes So gentle shoulder charge Love you mate Love you mate Salford skyline gloom Always you Could fly round any corner But until you do Love you mate
this is the kind of song where I want to go outside and scream my head off for no reason. i want to be at the edge of a cliff with my toes hanging off and I want to cry cause its just so god dahm beautiful. i want to lie down in the middle of a feild and just look up at the clouds and feel tears drip down my face and, really quietly, singing along at the same time. this is the part where i just stand looking out at the light through the windows and know...it cant get any better than this.
I have been looking for the piano notes to this amazing song for a LONG time, can anyone help me out? I truly think this song is one of the most amazing songs recently.
I love the way the piano riff towards the end of the song is the tiniest bit off beat, I'm not sure why. Maybe it's more emotive, not having it perfectly timed? It's strange, but it all but makes the song for me...
it ticks me off that it took me so long to discover these guys, as big a fan as i am of british music :(. oh well, i'm enjoying my immersion in this amazing band's music!
The heartbreaking closing track on "A Seldom Seen Kid" wrriten and performed for the Seldom Seen Kid himself, Bryan Glancy, a Manchester singer songwriter and best friend to Guy Garvey, Elbow's lead singer.
Bryan passed away in 2007 after a sudden illness. This is Garvey's tribute to him.
Something in the way the lines "Love you mate.." are delivered is simply heartbreaking. It's because it's sung very matter of factly, and very bluntly. It's clear it's from the heart.
Im a Yorkshire lad and, Ive followed the music of Elbow for a long time. Ive always admired the lead mans power as a lyricist throughout his Career. I would say that the Manchester band has tones of the industrial past of the North of England. They seem to cascade deeply for me. It is like poetry.
Sometimes its said that the music doesnt have any decent beat or that one song deviates too much from the previous one heard; but for me its like shifting emotion with deep meaning.
Shows diversity, generally what the best musicians and bands do. play different music, different ways. But add there own thing to it. i think elbow pull that off really well. What i think you should do. Is choose your sound.
Everyone loves mediocre Coldplay while Elbow has made some of the best records since The Smiths. They remind me of The Beatles in how well they arrange their tunes.
Congratulations on them winning the Mercury award. They admitted it was the best thing to happen to them, after 17 yrs. of being in Music Business.....Recognition at last.
I wish I had a friend like that. I don't have a "best friend." Maybe one day.

This song DOES make me cry.
I've been searching forever for a song to make me cry...
Randomly I'm listening to Grounds for Divorce, and other Elbow...and stumble upon this.
This song succeeds to make me cry.
It's just so depressing.
