Religion introduces falsehoods into people's minds, making them believe in the supernatural, in life after death, and angels, devils, etc. This mental construction of the universe prevents people to adress important issues with a rational approach. It makes people believe they are not part of nature. It would take hours to explain how this is detrimental to humans and how any good coming from religion is offset by all this bad.
Make good points up until 5:14. Not all religions believe that. Buddhism may believe that but different religions have different teachings about that. The reason why Christianity is so persistent, is because they believe their beliefs are true.
The trouble with a nonobjective world view is furniture, especially low laying pieces, like settees and footrests. One would ever be tripping over them, should their otherwise tangible nature be chosen to be ignored.. Then there are stairways, these would become perilous indeed.
Would it be a fair guess that you've read Richard Dawkin's "The God Delusion"? I'd highly suggest it if you haven't. There's a lot of interesting science to learn, if nothing else, but of course it confronts many of the questions you're raising here.
Me? I think the idea of subjective reality is an interesting fantasy and nothing else. You can belief whatever you like, humans can believe whatever they like, but it won't alter reality - only the way we interact with it
Thanks! I did read the God Delusion, I like it. I already have formed my opinions on this, I'm interested to hear everyone else's opinions and maybe get more subs with video replies.
My opinion does include an objective reality too, but I have to back it up and proclaim any assumptions I have to make to do it. Thanks for watching my video!
Bah, I tried posting once & it disappeared, I hope I'm not double posting.
I think it's because people don't think that living with a bag over their head is better and that knowing the truth can be just as good or better. I'm not sure what people would prefer though, living in a world where ppl are good b/c of religion or where ppl are good b/c of objective observations and decisions. I guess ppl's answers would depend on weather they're religious or not.
I think b/c most ppl think there's something inherently better about things that really exist, but that's not to say that ppl are right. Real things are obviously more practical, which is why I think most ppl would choose, all things being equal, a real world. But is that reasonable? I keep thinking back to Anselm's Ontological Argument, but then again something, eg an apple, and the exact same imaginary apple are still exactly the same.
I think that the more we learn about what is really going on,, on this planet, in the universe and beyond the better we can manage our collective futures. if people are to survive the next 1000 years it isn't going to be easy. the costeau quote is a little telling people are too selfish to sacrifice themselves for the good of all they need a higher power to deem it worthy. why cant we all live and die just for eachother?
Metalorg I'm not sure if you were saying that the point of the matrix movie was to show that living in a delusional world is not a bad thing. If you were then I believe you to be wrong. The idea of the matrix was created by the Jean Baudrillarnd. It is an allusion to how popular culture operates in society. In a sense a great many of people in the 'developled' world DO live in a delusional world where they are ignorant to the suffering their happiness causes others...
Thanks for the comment! I know the creators of the matrix wouldn't have thought that the matrix and living in a fantasy world would be better than the real world. I'm sure George Orwell wouldn't have thought Oceania would have turned into some nice Utopian world either.
I probably shouldn't have said it was to show a delusional world is not a bad thing. I was asking why is it that a delusional world is a bad thing.
Yes 1984 would become a fantastic utopian world. I assume Hitlers would have been too in 2000 generations or whatever, but it is not worth the cost now.I don't think i have to comment more on that lol were all human beings here.
The matrix is different. One of the things cipher request when he wanted to be re-inserted into the matrix is that he didn't want to remember a thing. If you had the ability to unknow the truth many people would opt for that because once again ignorance truly is bliss.
. . . and in turn stunts human evolution. ZI spoke a little harshly in the last comment, you could conceivably believe in a deist god while knowing all the facts/evidence/logical arguments. It wouldn't matter if he existed or not though is the kicker.
About living in the bag/matrix. If someone doesn't know the facts/clues/logic then they will be happily deceived. As soon as they are educated thoroughly though they can never go back to blissfully ignorant.
I don't believe that a human being can be happy lying to itself. The empirical evidence and logical conclusions lead to that god most probably doesn't exist. Its so highly improbable that its safe to assume that god doesn't exist. Anyone who doesn't come to this conclusion is either lying to themselves or is ignorant of all the evidence and arguments for reason. The problem is that religion was designed to prevent and dissuade the truth and logical thinking, appropriately, and in turn stunts. .
It makes everyone willing to sacrifice themselves for the good of everyone else in their religion. Those good feelings you describe don't come specifically from any of the religions anyway. They come from a genetic response of altruism towards others. You don't need the religion for the altruism and in many cases the religion, especially if the follower of the religion is a true follower and not a religious half-asser, can be quite detrimental, allowing magical thinking and dangerous delusions.
if truth is ultimate goal how come u are atheist thats religion if u dont think atheism is opinion and its a fact then u are not truth seeker. u are moron and atheism is food for intellect. There is only one way and there is no market of idea thats just rubbish.
I may post a response some time, but it depends on whether or not my computer decides to cooperate. Even short videos are a pain in the ass to make on this thing.
I have lots of problems editing on my computer too. I'm always dancing on a cliff. I'm looking forward to your video response if you can get it going.
Thanks for your neat comments! I agree with you but you haven't really told me why you choose truth over ignorant bliss. You're only reason you've said is that you like feeling bad sometimes. Haha
the longer i live the more i'm coming to realize that religion does have it's practical benefits and, although it's not perfect, neither are humans. i mean, people right now are just too stupid to face up to reality or accept the truth. My answer to your question however is no. I would never take blissful ignorance over truth. i like feeling bad sometimes. cool video metalorg

Religion benefits people?
REALLY?
Have you ever looked up the ratio of crime, to religion?
The closer we come to understanding reality, the closer we'll come to peace.
TheReasonWhyGuy 2 years ago
Yeah, I was going to bring up the ratio of crime in the second video.
I like your sentiment about peace.

Thanks, honestly most issues, and conflict originates from arrogance.
I like to say, that arrogance is a side effect of ignorance.

WE make our own truth :D
I actually used to follow that philosophy :D

It's been tough posting for me too.
Why do you think that people would want to live with a bag over their head? Cypher did. He's obviously a real person.
I agree that people don't, but why do you think so?
