Just finished this episode. One of my favorites ever. This song stays in my head for days. Two great performers working together(Cash and Falk). What a treat!
I bet old one-eyed Falk is still running around in the underworld after the notorious Man in Black! How many times have ITV repeated Swansong? Many ... and every time I clap along with ol' Johhny Boy and I fancy the young blonde hotties too! Phew ... I'm a convert man!
Oh yeah, now I remember this episode. Dang, WHY aren't any of the tv channels showing reruns of Columbo? 800 channels and nothing decent to watch. Networks, just start reshowing the good sitcoms from the 70's and 80's and you will have all the ratings you can handle.
From this youtube video, either the song was lip-synched or there is something wrong with the video. I don't remember noticing the lip-synching when I watched the original Colombo episode on tv, or later on dvd. I love this version of "I Saw the Light" so much that I grabbed the audio off of a vhs tape many, many years ago to digitize, and tried to find it elsewhere, but could only find a vinyl version of him live with Jerry Lee Lewis, which is not as good as the Colombo version.
As far as I know, this version of the song was not for sale to the public. According to one source, the studio take of this version was made for the film and auctioned on eBay years later along with other paraphernalia that was used for this episode. I am not sure if it was sold, but when I asked the seller, the recording was valued at about $6,000.
Yup, that's Ida Lupino. This might be my all-time favorite Columbo (and I have MANY favorites!). From Ruth Gordon to Janet Leigh to Donald Pleasence, Vera Miles, Leonard Nimoy, Martin Sheen, Rip Torn, Ray Milland, Martin Landau, Sal Mineo -- who WASN'T in a Columbo episode?! LOL But this one -- I will always watch this one again. I don't care if acting wasn't Cash's forte; this was so-o-o-o good.
@AndreHiltre . Man. How are you going to say all that hateful stuff after watching Johnny Cash sing that? It is amazing that you miss the point of the whole song. It is you my friend that are trying to poison minds. R.I.P. Johnny Cash. I get your message sir!
@MrChuckrice1 Geuss he got his username scrambled on purpose?!? Called me a retard after some well ment info, see now it,s this person. Shame to see someone like this on Columbo video,.It,s the opposite of what Columbo/Falk and Cash stand for
I remember seeing this episode when it first aired. I did not like the Idea that he played a killer in the show but maybe he wanted a little twist for a change from the daily norm.
How I love that song...in a "Columbo" serial, how such a chance!...I adore that character!...A song that's been played by JERZY MAK too...in french "Le jour est là"...I admire another singer too whose name is MO'SEAN..His song's "Give you my soul" and his voice's just a blessing!...I just can't wait 'bout his next L.P. 'cos I don't think I'll be deceived..an' that Supersinger will climb up many, many mountains from now on..Thanks YOUTUBE very much 4 all those marvelous finds...

Johnny Cash also starred in a made-for-TV movie called "Murder In Coweta County" based on a true story. He played a sheriff who got to send, of all people, Andy Griffith to the electric chair!
Griffith played a real bastard, and Cash was excellent. Shame he didn't do more acting, he was a natural. Always his own man, Johnny is irreplaceable.
i agree...one of my five preferred Columbo episode...and...from this i began to appreciate the great Johhny Cash...as the episodes with Donald Pleasance i'm wished he would not have been imprisoned...
Thank you for this beautiful old gospel favorite .I did see the light and am blessed to have God in my life everyday.
I don't know what I would have done without Him all the years. He has always been my Lighthouse my refuge from lifes storms and I know I don't ever wanna be without Him by my side. Thanks Again God Bless and Take Care
Also one of my favorite Columbo episodes! Believe it or not, this episode was my introduction to Johnny Cash. Also, one of the few episodes where I'm sympathetic to the killer.
@sbarr10 said skillfully played the role of the sleazy gospel singer/evangelist to the max, LOL. I think Johnny cash was a sincere Christian, in case you weren't aware.
The final scene in this episode is so good ;Columbo proves the Cash character killed his wife-Cash asks Columbo if he's scared to be alone with a murderer-Columbo replies",Nah,you would've confessed eventually-Anybody who can sing like that can't be all bad."
I love the ending of this episode after Columbo has captured Johnny Cashs character, Cash asks him "Arent you afraid to be alone with a killer?" and Columbo says "No, i had a feeling that sooner or later you would confess." Cash replies "I would have, It was getting to me." and Columbo then says "Listen, anyone who can sing beautifull music like that cant be all bad."
And then they drive away with the great song playing in the background, such a good episode of Columbo too.
The great thing about the ending of this episode of columbo is, that the luitenant is saying to "Tommy Brown" in the final scene someting like: "A man that can write such a song can't be bad at all". I'm always expecting Brown saying: "The song is by Hank Williams..."
Anyway a wonderful song. I wonder if the audience was really in the studio when he sang it.
Yes! He will always talk about his wife but we never get to see her!!!
The early 70's Columbo episodes are the best!!!! But you have to watch the show from the beginning to understand the murder plot always performed by rich & powerfull people, but Columbo will always get them with a small little clue or detail!

Praise the Lord that i saw the light! actually i just finished this episode from the season 3 DVD and it is awesome, Columbo even says that anyone that can sing like this cannot be all bad.
Johnny Cash's character even says that he would have confessed to the murder that he committed because it was getting to him and he was a better man than that, what a class act all the way.
From a good Columbo episode. Cash did a great job acting as well.

I really liked your channel and this video. If you need any help getting this video exposed I use a site called tubeviews (dot) net It has really helped like 20 of my main videos get to the top in position.
There is software im using to send atleast 30,000 text message a day advertising my online business...it is amazing. I think they have free demos to try as well.

I never heard Johnny sing this one. I say that all the time, and I'm always surprised.

Hab die Folge auch gesehen. Besser gesagt den Anfang, weil ich dann immer regelmäßig einschlaf wenn Columbo kommt;-)
