Yes I know, i understand the concept of this sport but honor systems don't really work all that well, fencing could not be played properly if it had not incorporated an electronic scoring system. just saying
I just can't understand why you guys can't incorporate an electronic scoring system it's instantaneously effective, hey? it works great in fencing what makes you think it won't work well in the SCA??
@Dimitri0809 that takes away from the setting as we generally try to keep any modern appliances that aren't vital away and if i'm not mistaken the scoring equipment has a wire leading from it? we would get tangled up when we're moving around
Are you stupid, ever heard of wireless??!! And why do you keep trying to avoid or say you don't want to use electronic equipment.. it's not going to hurt anyone. Seriously what's wrong with you I'm not trying to be mean but these ideas are not impossible!!, it's not that hard or difficult to play this sport with electronic scoreing aid. JUST GIVE IT A FUCKING CHANCE MAN! GOD...!!
@Dimitri0809 ok for one thing I have not insulted you so I don't see the reason to be insulting, and since I do not sport fence i didn't know if they had wireless, last i saw in the olympics they had wires. and in my last comment i pretty much said we don't have electronic equipment unless it's vital, generally we try to be as "mundane" free as possible. But why don't you find your local S.C.A group talk to their knight and or marshal and address these issues with them.
Ok sorry I didn't mean to offend but it's just hard to get through to you that's all, because everytime I suggest a new idea to this sport everyone in this organisation just becomes stuborn and doesn't really care about trying a new innovative way to keep track of a score or the use of electronic devices for tagging.
Serisouly I have done SCA but I do have a problem with the honor system it's just not accurate enough, I know it's tradition to this group to cont..
@wolfdragga to keep the honor system in practice but with electronics you won't need to and it would be far more accurate than an honor system. I'm not trying to displace the tradition on this sport I am just suggesting new ideas that will help aid in scoring and to make the playing expierience more accurate for some, there are alot of people I know that have trouble with the honor systems accuracy of gameplay but your sport is good in concept though if only the tagging cont..
@Dimitri0809 I'm afraid I still don't see what you mean by it not being accurate, is it the fact that if you get hit in the head but the opponent didn't hit hard enough?
Well I guess the system that I am talkinh about would be much differen't than using a rattan but even the rattan isn't that accurate enough when it comes to a 1 on 1 fight because the movements of the rattan swing blow agaisn't an oponent in combat moves way to fast for anyone to even tell who get's hit and this is including the marshals not just the players them selves.
I guess for this electronic system to work by sense of tag or light medium blows/hits would be a fairly thin metallic improvised sword that will be able to tranfer the electrical signal down the shaft of the sword through the electric jacket from what the oponent is wearing, the only downside to this system is that the blows may not be as hard as a rattan but it will be more accurate.
@KKConrado CONT- I will allow that some of these attitudes may have developed from these courtisies, but they were not the reasons they were initially done. Examples: Why does a man tip his hat to a lady when they meet or part? Why does a man, when walking with a lady, walk on the curb side of the sidewalk? Why is it incumbent on a man to insure that a lady is safely escorted to her vehicle or domicile? These courtisies have endured through history unto today. Why? If they are just acts of self.
@KKConrado- Interesting take on honor and chivalry. If your understanding of the history of courtesy is true, why were the concepts written down and codified in various cultures and time periods, then cited throughout history as the examples to which one should aspire. I have heard the examples you give. They were related to me as satrical humor, not facts. The courtesies given to ladies started in late period Europe, advocated by the church. Noble ladies were to be examplified as the Madonna.

@TheJonnyEnglish@JegolS There's probably a barony, shire, or canton near you, and you just don't know it. if you go to sca . org you can look up what kingdom you live in (JegolS almost certainly lives in Artemisia, and TheJonnyEnglish lives in Artemisia or An Tir). From there you can go to your kindgom's website, and find out what barony (or shire or canton) you're closest to! People in the SCA are really welcoming and friendly, so don't be afraid to ask questions.
@ themostbeatifull : So many who don't understand the concepts of chivalry and courtesy. Who do not now, nor probably ever will understand those concepts, and their lives are, and will be, so much the sadder for that loss.
@kegage408 funny thing is, chivalry is not what you think. Way back when, when you opened a door to let a lady through first, it was so you, the man, didnt get attacked by an assasin that may or may not have been hiding, and when you stood up when a lady walked in the room, it was because it was a signal that a woman walked in and it was time to stop talking about important things like politics.
I was taught by the guy at 4:06. They most likely interviewed him because his name was real big with us, as he was an insanely great fighter with flourintine, but he's Baron or something like that now. I miss those days, but hopefully I can relieve them as son of Lochier!
@paleomike8 I hope you have fun in Pennsic. Don't ware your self out right at the begining. That war goes about 2 weeks. Have fun and enjoy playing with us.
@Imogen1885 I agree with Beautifulblueyes15. Insulting people who do this is not polite. 99.9999% of SCA Members are perfectly Healthy. What your saying is that we have some sort of mental or physical handicap. We don't We Just Love The Medieval Time Era!!
I didn't judged them. They seem happy doing it. It seems fun! I would like to be part of one of these events one day. We share the same interest! I just stated a fact about their health...
D was luck enough to come in contact with pretty sucubss at rennisance fair and got a picture with her yay.And for future refs chicks dig chainmail armor woot.I no i have set of it 17 gauge mild steel wedge rivited.
@ImmortalK it's pretty much like a game man, just like soccer, baseball, football, it's about the love of the sport, besides it's a too each there own deal. no sense in putting people down for having an intrest, makes you look a fool for doing it in the first place.
Everything is cool, you have good fun, you fight massive battles etc. But don't call it re-enchantment or historical fight because i haven't seen there at least one person with at least 2 pieces of armor truly historical and this is terrible joke from all Europe's civilizations ever existed. Problem that you mix armor and clothing from different cultures and ages in world's history doesn't exist. You have there some costume's that you think (I hope not) it is historical, but it isn't at all.
@Pilsudczykk There are a few reasons for this. First of all, were are the Society For Creative Anacronism (Anachronism= something out of its place and time). Second, because we are an all-encompassing group, we try to accomodate people of all budgets. (not everyone has the funds to buy/skills to build truly accurate armor. And third, armor must be adapted to certain safety standards (like the grills/face masks in helmets). And fourth, people are allowed to create their own coat of arms.
@GermanSwordMaster This isn't medieval reenactment. Its a social club that has some appearance of the middle ages. Its all for fun. No stuffy elitists here.
@sniperspriggs most events are only like $25 for an entire weekend around my area. As far as gear? Depends. you can get a historic look for less than $50 easily. Best bet is to find local group and talk to them. e-mail me and I can help you find someone near you.
@sewagedweller Thats where the C in SCA comes in. Creative. SCA is NOT a historical organization. Its a goup of medieval enthusiasts. Its for fun. Its not a reenactment org.
@JVRottweil---Youre no different than the guys who tell airsofters to go and shoot each other with real guns. The SCA doesnt use real swords for obvious reasons. The fencers are the only SCA members who use real steel, and even they have to wrap their blades a bit. Ive done every blade based martial art you can imagine, and the SCA is the only way I can use any of it. If you wanna die, go get in an edge-fight. Its not cowardly what we do, its honorable. It keeps us from being killers.
@XStonewallJacksonX You can check out the main sca.org site but its not a good page for newcomers and very impersonal. . E-mail me and I will try and get you the contact info directly and hook you up.
@sewagedweller Blunts? feh. Real men sharpen them up and actually kill one another. if you want to play the "real men" tough guy game? Oh wait, you wont? Its for fun. Same as the SCA guys and their wooden swords. Its for fun. Blunt steel. taped rattan. Real men do it and not worry about what one perceives it as. Only insecure men worry about it.
@JVRottweil---Oh, and I forgot....REAL MEN LIVE TO PROVIDE FOR THEIR FAMILIES. REAL MEN DONT RISK THEIR LIFE OVER FUN. AND REAL MEN ADMIT IT. That being said, I hope you dont get hurt doing whatever it is you "real men" do.
@JVRottweil---Yeah, I actually apologize for that....I wasnt directing it at you...I read something someone else was writing and got way off track of things. Sorry about that.
Played quite a bit from '78 - '98, just a bit since (joint trouble and mundane life...) Learned a lot, met great folks and my military commanders didn't think me too out there ,-)
@0Sharkosaurus0 You must be at least 18 in order to fight in the SCA, SCA means Society for creative Anachronism, founded in 1968 at Berkley, CA it was originally someone's party. Come join us! We'd love to have a newcomer!
what history are you talking about?) "heroes of might&magic" is not history) where did they get those ridiculous sets of armour?) it's not authentic at all. what a shame)) 4:12 boobs on a breast plate!!))))) lmao!))
@cossackDmitro They arent re-enactors. Its a fun group with a medieval look. They dont really claim to be anything else. The standards are easy to meet so more can play. Some folks have authentic kits but ts not required.
you can say its not an uptight group at all. Just folks having fun. Like there is anything wrong with that?
@Ooooo336 some of us use real swords as well. The swords used historically weren't that heavy. Actually not much heavier than the rattan the SCA uses.
@jrichca They don't usually provide it, on ocassion you may have someone who will lend you gear if you know them, but usually they'll help you make your own and offer places where you can buy it :P
I'm being encouraged to bring my know-how to practice in one of these SCA groups. The great thing about it is the cost of membership is a hell a lot cheaper than most traditional martial art schools. But I'm not sure about the rules of engagement though, this counting for this, your leg torn off you can fight on your knees, etc.
@ColonelMarksman This really isnt martial arts. The moves are not historical. Its designed for a sporting fight system. While some members do go out and learn actual historical fighting techniques, most of the SCA fighting system is a sport fighting system. Not actually historical for the most part, but damn fun.
@JVRottweil I and a friend of mine are also interested in this, but I wish to know more. We both live in the northern Wisconsin, U.P. of Michigan area. Is there any way you could help?
@ogostaboy It is learned during training. You learn calibration and you decide when you have been hit sufficiently to call youself wounded or dead depending on location.
i just found out about this and i really want to join but i have no idea were it is or how to sign up for it. if any one knows email me at nick.difatta@hotmail.com i live in pittsburg so if there are any of them near here please could you tell me

@sewagedweller Thats where the C in SCA comes in. Creative. SCA is NOT a historical organization. Its a goup of medieval enthusiasts. Its for fun. Its not a reenactment org.
JVRottweil 1 year ago
@JVRottweil---Youre no different than the guys who tell airsofters to go and shoot each other with real guns. The SCA doesnt use real swords for obvious reasons. The fencers are the only SCA members who use real steel, and even they have to wrap their blades a bit. Ive done every blade based martial art you can imagine, and the SCA is the only way I can use any of it. If you wanna die, go get in an edge-fight. Its not cowardly what we do, its honorable. It keeps us from being killers.

@XStonewallJacksonX You can check out the main sca.org site but its not a good page for newcomers and very impersonal. . E-mail me and I will try and get you the contact info directly and hook you up.

real men fight with blunt swords and axes .
sewagedweller 1 year ago
@sewagedweller Blunts? feh. Real men sharpen them up and actually kill one another. if you want to play the "real men" tough guy game? Oh wait, you wont? Its for fun. Same as the SCA guys and their wooden swords. Its for fun. Blunt steel. taped rattan. Real men do it and not worry about what one perceives it as. Only insecure men worry about it.
JVRottweil 1 year ago
@JVRottweil---Oh, and I forgot....REAL MEN LIVE TO PROVIDE FOR THEIR FAMILIES. REAL MEN DONT RISK THEIR LIFE OVER FUN. AND REAL MEN ADMIT IT. That being said, I hope you dont get hurt doing whatever it is you "real men" do.

@JVRottweil---Yeah, I actually apologize for that....I wasnt directing it at you...I read something someone else was writing and got way off track of things. Sorry about that.

@samdonelly7 its cool. Sorry for being blunt as well.

Is it rubber swords?!
Skumpaj 1 year ago
@Skumpaj They're made of rattan, a bamboo relative. It's stated quite obviously in the video.
OberleutnantFalke 1 year ago
@Skumpaj Its Rattan. Basically a solid bamboo wrapped in duct tape. Gives a good thump.

@Kuibul Take you elitism and stuff it. Some SCA folks are going to be in the BoN next year. Both are fun things to do. Why be an ass?

A very nice primer to educate people, and even if it is a rather old video, not a whole lot has changed.

do they talk miideavel languages?
henrikhankhagnell 1 year ago
@henrikhankhagnell No. We talk like we normally do. We are not re-enactors.
JVRottweil 1 year ago
@ jrichca If you go to a fighter's practice, they should give you some loaner armor until you can get your own.
Sayreye 1 year ago
@0Sharkosaurus0 You must be at least 18 in order to fight in the SCA, SCA means Society for creative Anachronism, founded in 1968 at Berkley, CA it was originally someone's party. Come join us! We'd love to have a newcomer!

@Sayreye 16 in some Kindgoms
JVRottweil 1 year ago
what history are you talking about?) "heroes of might&magic" is not history) where did they get those ridiculous sets of armour?) it's not authentic at all. what a shame)) 4:12 boobs on a breast plate!!))))) lmao!))
cossackDmitro 1 year ago
@cossackDmitro They arent re-enactors. Its a fun group with a medieval look. They dont really claim to be anything else. The standards are easy to meet so more can play. Some folks have authentic kits but ts not required.
you can say its not an uptight group at all. Just folks having fun. Like there is anything wrong with that?

swords out of bamboo ain't nothing compared to the weight of a real sword those days... man
Ooooo336 1 year ago
@Ooooo336 some of us use real swords as well. The swords used historically weren't that heavy. Actually not much heavier than the rattan the SCA uses.

do any of you know if the sca provides armor?
jrichca 1 year ago
@jrichca Most groups have loaner armour to help get you started. It wont be the most comfortable but it will protect you.
JVRottweil 1 year ago
@jrichca They don't usually provide it, on ocassion you may have someone who will lend you gear if you know them, but usually they'll help you make your own and offer places where you can buy it :P
Aserox 1 year ago
@jrichca They'll provide Loaner Armor, but members will help you out when it comes to making your own
Gecko7291971 1 year ago
I'm being encouraged to bring my know-how to practice in one of these SCA groups. The great thing about it is the cost of membership is a hell a lot cheaper than most traditional martial art schools. But I'm not sure about the rules of engagement though, this counting for this, your leg torn off you can fight on your knees, etc.
ColonelMarksman 1 year ago
@ColonelMarksman This really isnt martial arts. The moves are not historical. Its designed for a sporting fight system. While some members do go out and learn actual historical fighting techniques, most of the SCA fighting system is a sport fighting system. Not actually historical for the most part, but damn fun.

Cool! How they know when they are dead?
ogostaboy 1 year ago
@ogostaboy It is learned during training. You learn calibration and you decide when you have been hit sufficiently to call youself wounded or dead depending on location.
cptkonrad 1 year ago
@ogostaboy its chivilry. You have to admit you have died

is it any wonder all most all of them are fat?
lexmark2300 1 year ago
@KanivalFreak
Best advice I ever got was in three parts:
Don't swear fealty, don't join a household and don't volunteer for any offices for your first year. See it all before you commit.
Pick a name before one gets picked for you.
Always remember how much fun you had on your first days in the SCA and make other people feel that way.
Good luck to ya Kanival! I'll cya on the field I'm sure.
