Once considered "guilty pleasure" music (you were supposed to like Beatles/Stones/Doors/Hendrix/Van Morrison), these are an affordable alternative to the others. These are sort of the bands who wanted to rock but didn't want to indulge on LSD or pot, so I like to call this "soft hippie" music, and some of this evolved into the soft rock/AOR of the '70s and '80s.
There seems to be price guides out there for every other form of music, but none on any of these. And I am still wondering why? It's not that there isn't any collectors of Sunshine Pop,Bubblegum,,or Power Pop out there, because worldwide there is a ton of collectors out there who collect and buy it.I know that I do,and would love to see a price guide on them.So what gives?
Thank you so much for sharing your collection. There really needs to be a price guide for Sunshine Pop,Bubblegum, and Power Pop,so that people who collect music from these genres know how much their records of these artists are worth in value, and also for artists of these genres who are more obscure than the ones that you talked about here. There really needs to be a 45,and an LP price guide on these music gfenres.
Nice collection of records from the 60's era and aside from obvious top 40 hits that have been played time and again on oldies or nostalgia radio stations, I am quite unfamiliar with the 'baroque pop' or 'sunshine pop' genres. The explanations given for each record and the background information provided of songs and groups is much appreciated. Thanks
Interesting vid. But I'd like to mention that Tommy James and the Shondells went beyond "fairly popular" in that they were not only more than a one-hit wonder, but that one of their songs, "Mony-Mony" was covered by Billy Idol.
His version hit #1 in Britain and became a party standard of the 1980s.
After looking into The Free Design, I discovered yet another genre: baroque pop. I would love to see the bands of this musical label gathered together. Also, any of the handful of medieval/renaissance influenced bands as well.
Sure! The Left Banke were the "baroque pop" group par excellence in the 60s, but they were far from alone. Orchestral pop in general came as a response to the louder "rock," and baroque pop was a sort of smartening-up of orchestral pop. Sometime I'd like to write an article about all of the academics and intellectuals who worked in 60s pop--there were quite a few.
I haven't delved into the lyrics much, but I'll say The Free Design song Love You is (mind you, I love it) hilarious. It reminds me of the song My Favorite Things: a sort of puerile listing. It makes me wonder what's in store from the rest of the genre. I think of Leonard Cohen as intellectual, not pop music. I'm sure even a cursory study may prove different, if not, I'll assume the smartening up lies in the arrangements and melody. If you ever write that article, I would love to read it!
Nice Collection of Albums. I have collested 45's since 1977. I have about 12,000 of them and close to 6,000 45 Picture sleeves. Oh, yea I do have many albums too
As a record collector, I am totally impressed with the condition of these hard-to-find 60's nuggest! Thank you for sharing these impressive finds with the world! Some of these I've never seen before, like Tommy James & the Shondells, Lemon Pipers, 1910 Fruitgum Co., etc. Everyone's heard the music....wonderful to see the original LPs here!!! A++++++++
Yes and no. If I have the CD, chances are I'll just play the CD rather than the record. If it's not on CD, I'll play the record in order to make a rip and then play the rip from then on. I love records but definitely find that the digital stuff is more convenient for me to play in my home, office, car, etc. Plus the more you play a record, the more you leave it open for potential damage.
Most of this stuff is on CD in fact: Clique, Grass Roots, Blades of Grass, Rose Garden, etc. The trick is knowing where to look, because many of these CDs are imports that you just won't find in your local chainstore.
I really dig your videos and this one has a special place in my heart as I'm a bit of a pop junkie. The Crabby Appleton at the end made me a happy girl. Thank you for a great rundown!
Another excellent collection of records. And unlike a lot of your psychedelic record collections (which I also love), these are LPs most people could probably find at their local used record store for a reasonable price. Thanks for sharing. Keep up the good work.
Tommy Boyce composed Curtis Lee's 1961 hit "Pretty Little Angel Eyes" produced by Phil Spector. Is there any song on that first album that resembles that song?
Every time I tell someone how many records I have (17K), they always think I have a great collection. I'm quick to correct them and specify that I have a very low rate of collectibles, and most collectors have more records than I have, and more collectibles too.
This video is what I mean. Of all the cool stuff shown in this one single video, I only have one.
Neat LP's enjoyed the refresher course. Like you my collection is huge. Good to here Crabby in the background !! Some of my vids i show my collection.

Even more rare this song was being played in a movie starring a 19 yr. old Helen Mirren and James Mason in 1969.
