Excellent movie. Speilberg may be alittle bit of an emotionally "disney like" director, if you compare to Stanely Kubrick for an example, but this movie is classic. If you want to see how the location of the shooting looks today, watch /watch?v=_ovtZq2dbuY
I have never before or since seen a movie that blew me away like this one. This movie had me crying for hours after it was over, then crying again every time I tried to talk about it. I saw this in 1982, I was eleven and I was very much like Elliott. It was like I was watching a movie about myself. And now at 40, I don't think the movie has lost one bit of its power. It's absolutely astonishing... and it's not even my favorite Spielberg movie! That's Close Encounters.
Honestly, there have got to be YouTube trolls that just go around looking for videos that have no or very few dislikes to thumb down! Why would anyone dislike this? Jesus!
@lemonpower45 same here. E.T. is my favorite movie of all time even though i used to terrified of it as a kid. i own four versions i.e. the vhs green video tape, the single disc 2002 version, the 2 disc colllector's edition, and the ultimate gift set.
"but when i read the script i just didn't feel that was a movie that i wanted to direct, it was too violent, it turned me against myself and against my own beliefs that anything that would take so many lightyears and so much technology just to get to the planet earth, would they come with laser and missiles and bad intentions? personally i never thought that would be the case"
This film is a classic, i grew up on this movie, it brings back so many good memories. I love the noises et makes, it kind of sounds like a new born baby, i don't know why, but it is beautiful.
@Gencturk92 who gives a shit, youre an asshole who needs an education, this is a spielberg video and not hitchcock's. why wont u rather stop the video, search for alfred hitchcock, select the video u wanna watch, and shut the fuck up. It's non sense u compare spielberg and hitchcock because they both have their own talents, MAGNIFICENT TALENTS. so go fuck urself and ur mom.
Looks like M Night saw this and thought, "Hey! I could write that script that Spielberg didn't want to direct. After all, what does he know about movies? I'll call it......Signs!"
@lemonpower45 It definitely scared me as a child. I still find ET as an evil entity even after seeing this movie over 50 times because of the trauma of ET when I was so young.
@TheAtomicBlog You're right to be scared because the movie is really about Elliot becoming possessed by an incarnate devil. E.T., the first and last letters of ElliotT. ET walls in Elliott. Hence the "psychic" link between the two characters which boils down to E.T. using Elliot like a puppet. What's the first thing that the alien demon does to Elliott once he's in possession of his soul? He gets him drunk and has him make a move on a child in his class.
Notice the demon alien poses as a ghost on Halloween but is also posing as Gertie (Drew Barrymore) to fool Elliott's Mother so that the alien can lead Elliott out into the woods against the rules of his mother. In the--some say ghost-directed by Spielberg--Spielberg produced Poltergeist, which was released around the same time as E.T., there's another blond little girl character who becomes possessed by "ghosts".
Mister Spielberg! ET is a good movie but your favorite issue is the baaaad baaaad German! The most movies i know from you are against aaaaaalllll Germans!! You are just a jewish HATEPREACHER!!!
It's weird to hear that John Sayles of all people would want to turn this material into an action picture. He must have been desperate for cash at the time.
et is a movie. it can make sombody feel scared when they do see happy but he is a loveable person to hang out with. he can tell you what he is from but he has to be a good person.
Personally I like to think of the relationship between Elliot and E.T. as being like the relationship between George Bailey and his guardian angel Clarence in It's a Wonderful Life.....E.T. is not only a "special friend" he's also a guardian angel
I don't get why so many people who are scared of this movie are suddenly watching this documentary and posting comments about how scared they were when they were kids
i used to think this movie was so boring when i was a kid. but then on impulse (and boredom) i bought it on dvd coz it was cheap and then i started watching it more and more and now it's one of my favourite films ever. it really is gorgeous.
If you stop thinking of E.T. as an extra-terrestrial and start thinking of him as a deformed human of someone that was a part of some science experiment gone terribly wrong he becomes extremely terrifying. Especially if your a little kid, like I was. Imagining him opening my door in the middle of the night with that smoke and spot light shining down as he comes towards me is still enough to give me chills.
Hey Steven can you please convert E.T. into a 3d film. I would love to see your epic masterpiece in spectacular 3d and i want to be able to live this experience of an alien coming out of the screen. bring it back for its 30th or 35th anniversary in 3D!

E.T. HOME =Estimated Time untill mom's new york house, as senor Spielberg's Dad lived near the red wood trees, but his mom was in new york [az?] just like Angelina Jolie [tomb raider] like james bond "a view to a kill" in s.f.... distance is the most "believable thing". if you were actually there as a 10 year old left-handed-strait... middle child [boy with older bro and babey sis] ah My Dad would bring E.T.'s [mexican laborers] home... to plant trees [dig -espanol-cement..] THERE'$ NO ESCAPE!
Steven Spielburg worked SO WELL with these amazing actors. Just look at the way he's explaining to the kid playing Elliot (sorry, but I can't remember the actor's name) how he should causiously search through the bushes for whatever's moving around in them (which we know was ET, of course) .
I think its all a dream. Elliot`s dream which starts when he falls asleep on the lawn chair and ends with an abrupt cut to credits in the forest. Its about adults destroying a child`s life through divorce, Elliot just wants to check the fu%$ out of this world.
I LOVE the scene (not here) where Steven directs the halloween day dressed as a woman. He looked like Jamie Farr on Mash. Too funny! And the way he comes up with an idea for a movie, is the same way I write. Too cool!
Steven Spielberg seems like a great guy to work with, as a director. He talks to Henry Thomas and helps him 'SEE' the scene before he's in it.
