Beautiful. I used to live in Scotland (Sutherland) and I loved watching the birds (and bats) at sunset. It's humbling somehow. I now live in Canada (Alberta) and I watch the Canadian Geese fly away in their uniforms v’s and I feel sad to see them go…
Oh wow. I have never seen anything like this. I would have been frightened. It just feels so much bigger than I am even just watching it online. Thank you for giving me the chance to experience this.
indeed beautiful to watch. If we could reach the state in which we could understand the maths and physics involved, without trying to, then human kind would be in similar harmony. The harmonics of Jan Garbarek's music are always refreshing; he's a great musician (so is his daughter). Linking the images to the music is a personal choice by the creator of the clip. Silence would be better, as the birds don't react to the music, and neither do the musicians react to the dynamics of the flock.
Every year In the late fall this happens where I live. There are a pair of hawks that round them up, & then dive into the flock to kill them. [Just like sardines bieng balled up by tuna] I don't know how the hawks keep track of the fallen. Or maybe it's just sport for them. It's an awsome sight to see though.
murmurations are starlings in flocks coming together early evening around dusk, flying as one to create amazing moving shapes across the early evening sky.
It's very fitting that the film is set to a Medieval Organum (albeit a modernized version), because to me while flocks of birds of any size are magical and mesmerizing, gigantic swarms such as this one evoke religious inspiration.
Not a flock. When in a group they are called a mumuration of starlings. It may look like graceful dancing or magical to us, but in reality they are fighting for their lives. This formation flying is in response to a predator in their midst and if you look closely at any of this type of footage you will likely spot the bird of prey looking for his lunch. Fish in the ocean also use this type of defense. I'm happy to see Fifi48 mentions the falcon!
@BnSuItan The real sound was the roar of the thundering traffic on the motorway, no recordable sound of the birds. I love the music - but then I chose it! ;-)
They are actually not "formation flying" like one would think. they all have the same brains, so their reactions to the wind changes are identical making them look coordinated. They only appear to move as one because they are all thinking the same thing but independently, if that makes sense.
@jimsjazzz I couldn't believe this when I first saw this video. The music blends perfectly with the movement of the starlings. Truly a spiritual experence. I feel wonderful very time I watch it.
The music is by Jan Garbarek AND The Hilliard Ensemble, who are as known in early music as Garbarek is in jazz! Please give credits to all who are due! And I do hope you asked permission to use the music in this video.
@kubikpt Thank you for your interest. I do indeed know who the album is by and it has been a favourite for many years. In fact I was lucky enough to see Garbarek and the Hilliard Ensemble at Durham Cathedral earlier this year. Utterly glorious and something I will always remember.
I do not use music without permissions though I appreciate your concern.
Please do check the film details where you will see that the album is suitably mentioned.
@Fifi48 :-) All is well. And I'm sorry I sounded a bit harsh, but the Hilliard Ensemble is one of my favorite groups and I know their music has been commercially "stolen" in the past (by the group Enigma, for example). I should have said I also enjoyed your video: I did. It's really an amazing sight, and I can only imagine how the video, though fantastic it is, doesn't give the sensation of having that scene happen while you're there. I envy you :-)
Thank you so much for sharing such beauty of nature's so intelligent performance. It's as if they KNOW they are putting on a show for humans to observe. So artful!!! At times they look like a big shark coming out of the water and at times like a big bird, and that pack even into a heartshape for a couple of seconds. So amazing!!!
This makes me think of the Morrigan, and of my grandmother (of blessed memory) gone two years next month. To me, they are the same. Thank you for this video.
It's like spotting pictures and images in clouds; this is so beautiful. I would love to have been there with you! What an awesome spectacle. I appreciated the stills along with the moving picture. Thank you so much for sharing.
That video is marvelous. Great you had the blessing to see something like that. It made me cry, really, just thinking about how great is our God. I hope some time I can have the chance to see something like that in real. Thanks for sharing the video. Loved it. Blessings. ;)
I saw this same type of spectacle over my house in Michigan today (hence why I'm looking up these vids on Youtube tonight). It had the most profound spiritual effect on me. I can't even explain it or put it into words. After an incredibly difficult week in my personal life, this one moment completely shifted everything. I now all of a sudden have renewed hope about life and the world in general. Witnessing natural phenomena such as this is a gift.
@ScottMasson The spirituality of it affected me deeply too. I still feel it after a couple of years. It was an experience that I could barely put into words. Such beauty.
It's amazing how quick they turn with such co-ordination. Biologist Rupert Sheldrake suggested that morphogenetic fields are the most likely explanation - rather than simply the conventional explanation (which is not really adequate).
See this? Now look at how fractured humanity is. See the difference? Very simple. We just don't work as the natural world works. We work AGAINST it. Nature is exposing us. Exposing our weaknesses. Energy derivation. Humanity is now insanity. We will have a choice. Continue the status quo or go in a new direction. Staus quo equals endless misery. So that kind of narrows it down, doesn't it?
Apparently they all follow one bird - the one that looks the strongest - thats how they never collide. Its the most beautiful sight I've ever seen. I get them in my town but nowhere NEAR this many. I love them so much!
I grew up seeng this as a child in Mexico cause I lived where there was alot of harvest, always early in the mornig or late afternoon, it was amazing! These clouds of birds were at least a cople of miles long dough.
I have seen folds turn within tunnels, I have touched the silken sky as countless artists weave grace before my very eyes. Harmony of winds as if each breath of tiny life is reaching out to me. Wings of divine dunes dance in myriads of haze and I see wonders that hold me speechless. Each one spins a web as if controlled by natures built-in chip. I see grace and I know that I am nothing in comparison. We are nothing because we dance alone, not so the Starling... unity is life, so wonderful.
@finallygot1 It brings me contentment that you are touched by my words, but words are so inadequate for me, what I find fullfilling is to see the love of others in action in this world, now that really makes me happy! And also, of course, the happy smile of my son. God bless you for being there. Peace to you. Paul.
@onlylexus separation is an illusion of the thinking mind. we are all one. like drops making an ocean, no limit between one and the other. I feel you.
@onlylexus: your words are so eloquent.. and true. We are ALL stardust, children of Creation.. it seems that our species is the most "intelligent" and yet, the most irresponsible.. a terrible paradox.
@GreenRad2012 because of this belief that we are separate and so resist the call. No starling or tree or creature of the deep ever stands up and claims "I will do my own thing" and so they live in harmony at one with life and the universe at large.
@hermimi530 I thank you so much for your kindness and your remarks. The wonders of creation and nature are so easily taken for granted by mankind. To see this miracle in the sky's moved me to poetry and somehow brought me to tears and I felt truly humbled by the sheer mystery of it all. Patterns in the clouds like a living Aurora Borealis, now that's another sight that I have to experience! Who or what makes it all happen, why does it affect us so deeply, with so much feeling and emotion?
I wonder how many birds r in there to form this stunning view... As I can't even figure out the form of a single bird. They looked more like bees in a group to me
It blows my mind! The flock looks and moves like a bird in flight...the head is stretched forward, the wings rise and fall, the body is a perfect aerodynamical curve, and a tail for stability. It's as if the DNA that builds each bird, an ultimate flying machine, also creates the larger "bird." It is remarkable and peaceful.
This is gorgeous! I've seen similar flocks outside in my neighborhood or outside my school but nothing of this scale. There were maybe a hundred birds, as compared to the thousands upon thousands here! I am both grateful and jealous.
damn its sick how they can create patterns like this, and when you think about it, its all aranged! Most humans couldn't come up with a complex pattern like they do, its looks so! Fucking cool!
@jewishmansjew Its safety in numbers, the same as with a shoal of fish. In numbers of hundreds of thousands they have a much higher chance of surviving, especially when raptor birds are around.
They certainly don't do it for us. As mere humans our existence is nothing to them, other than our destruction of their habitat and food sources.
@jewishmansjew In addition to Fifi48's accurate comments, this behavior probably also is a means of building social bonds (albeit on a grand scale). They are very intelligent birds and social bonds are vital for their survival.
@jewishmansjew i think you will find that, outside of human social and biological interaction, very few of the natural phenomenon we witness has "entertaining and educating human beings" as its root cause.
I really hope this is rhetorical, because my mind is totally blown that someone who has access to technology as sophisticated as a computer could actually still have a humanocentric view of the universe. :(
Wonderful! I think the coordinated dancing could be explained by using fractals, researchers found that human crowd movements can be described by fractals they called orchids, a few simple rules about how each individual behaves in a crowd that lead to these amazing shapes as an emergent quality. It's like a single organism throwing shapes!
I'm amazed how many people seem to dislike the music. I personally LOVE it. I especially like the Saxophone abd the way it modernizes the vocal genre.
@thegreatstrange As on a previous note - the roaring traffic on the M74 ruined the film and over powered the whoosh of the birds so the music was apt and I love it. If you don't like it play it on mute. Simples
WOW what a awsome video..and even more amazing how 1 falcon controling thousands of birds ..lol...any idea how many birds were there?? and they are racing pigeons right?
this the seen, is the wind like wise in this kind of playfulness. . . mind made visible, much as the holy smokes leaves us see the movemeant of air this how I see the energies of peoples dancing through their lives the interactions spawned by intuits as in a feel for flying . . mindscapes dancing on the horizons of our sanity
Thank you so much for this video! I have a rescued pet starling, and I have developed such an appreciation for this species (which is considered an invasive pest here in the U.S.). Your video was amazing!

but why do they do this? they do this for us to see?
jewishmansjew 1 year ago
@jewishmansjew Its safety in numbers, the same as with a shoal of fish. In numbers of hundreds of thousands they have a much higher chance of surviving, especially when raptor birds are around.
They certainly don't do it for us. As mere humans our existence is nothing to them, other than our destruction of their habitat and food sources.

@Fifi48 served it u just dissed your own species lol
QUINNBELL888 1 year ago
@jewishmansjew In addition to Fifi48's accurate comments, this behavior probably also is a means of building social bonds (albeit on a grand scale). They are very intelligent birds and social bonds are vital for their survival.

@jewishmansjew i think you will find that, outside of human social and biological interaction, very few of the natural phenomenon we witness has "entertaining and educating human beings" as its root cause.
I really hope this is rhetorical, because my mind is totally blown that someone who has access to technology as sophisticated as a computer could actually still have a humanocentric view of the universe. :(

Thank you for sharing such an amazing video. The music is "heavenly" as it matches the ebb and flow of the gathering starlings.

I especially like the Saxophone abd the way it modernizes the vocal genre.

like sine waves, I'm going to assume they use electro-gravitational forces to maneuver, there is an order in that teeming mass

I really enjoyed the music. :) What a powerful experience you've created by putting the two together.
Who is the music by?

beautiful film, but why oh why the music??? it spoils the whole thing...PLEASE re-post without!!!
thegreatstrange 1 year ago
@thegreatstrange As on a previous note - the roaring traffic on the M74 ruined the film and over powered the whoosh of the birds so the music was apt and I love it. If you don't like it play it on mute. Simples

Thank you so much for this video! I have a rescued pet starling, and I have developed such an appreciation for this species (which is considered an invasive pest here in the U.S.). Your video was amazing!

poetry wise: See Pam Ayres (sp?)
She wrote:
"I'm a starling, me darling ,
Me and the boys..."
i have a feeling that you are not after this kind of poetry.
The poem make the bird seem much less awesome than how I remember it and how this video shows it.
I remember seeing this on the Somerset levels when I was a child.
I took it for granted then and have spent the rest of my life trying to revisit it.
