The countries in this series really don't represent any one nation but, rather a set of ideals (with a cultural inclination towards Japan...That's where the series originates after all). Britannia represents imperialism, monarchy, and nobility (inherent power) while Japan represents democracy, revolution, and meritocracy (acquired power). The whole series showcases the flaws of both ideals- Britannia treats people like crap while Japan (Lelouch) uses them for personal gain.

I love this turnaround soo much! In the first season you would only hear ''All Hail Britannia'' all the way and everyone, with exception of some Black Knight members referred to Area 11 and Elevens. But now, after a lot of effort and build up and no longer hiding in the underground, the Japanese finally have a voice to demonstrate their pride and willingness to fight for the liberation of Japan against the highly unrealistically powerful Britannia. I'm not Japanese, but this truly touches me!!!

In R1 there is a history class as a background in which the teacher is speaking about how the monarchy of Great Britain had to flee to "New Britania" after the defeat of Trafalgar, New Britania was the name for England´s colonies in North America.

Too true. There's nothing worse than bad dubbing. That's why I often prefer Japanese dubbing with English subtitles. Reading words is better than having to listen to voice actors that don't match up with the characters. Code Geass, of course, was an exception. I prefer the English dub, much like Big O, Outlaw Star, etc, but I already went into that.

Great comparison. It was weird that the developers at Bungie didn't just have the Covenant speaking some strange alien dialect with English (or whatever the player's language was) subtitles translating what was said. Stupidity? Laziness? Maybe both.

And that is exactly the point I was getting at! Switching back and forth between the Britannians speaking English and the Elevens speaking Japanese would have showed an incredibly impressive amount of realism.

Well, maybe it was stupidity or laziness, but if you read more about why the aliens can speak English, it is explained that at first the aliens didnt knew anything about the language, and had to put like more than 10,000 elites and grunts to study and learn the language.

You can corroborate this in Halo Wars, were you can read files and edicts you have unlocked.

Well, even if the 10,000 Elites and grunts of the Covenant had studied the language, that doesn't explain how the other few hundred thousand know the language, including the Prophets themselves. Did they teach the others the language? And more importantly, if they did, why? Why would the Covenant even need to speak English, or any human language? They had no intent of diplomacy, or interspecies negotiations, only to eradicate the humans in their quest of the activation of the Halo installations.

Exactly. Characters like Kallen Kuzuki, being half-Britannian, would know English, but would only speak the language in front of other Britannians, speaking Japanese in front of the Japanese. Zero would speak Japanese, being as intelligent as he is, to the Black Knights. The divergence of language between factions would give the show a greater complexity, and provide it with a sense of realism. Just food for thought, though, since the series is over and done with.

Granted that this is a Japanese animated series, it still doesn't make any sense at all that the Britannians are speaking Japanese in the original, non-English dubbed version. The Holy Britannian Empire is the continuation of the English monarchy, right? So why do they speak Japanese, the language of the very people that denounce, disgrace, genocide and refer to as "Elevens"? I think they should have spoken English even in the Japanese spoken version, to keep up with realism.
