I think both are incredibly talented...and Regi's skill is tremendous. It just sounds better on a bass than a strat, since the strat has those thin strings. But when you compare skill in general, I think Regi could make Victor his bitch in a slap bass battle. And then there's Roy Wilfred "Futureman" Wooten, but he's a whole different story. All Three Wooten Bros. are tremendous players, even Regi, who was never a Flecktone.

If you weren't just trying to be an ass, you'd realize that what the guitarist is doing takes just the same talent as the bassist. The tonality is just less clear on a guitar because of the lighter gauge strings; he's competing rhythmically, tonally, and to the degree that it's applicable, melodically. Maybe you just need to listen a little closer.

True, a band with a bassist who played melodically like this all the time would probably get a bit crowded. however, this is a battle, so of course victor is going to forget the bass' traditional role of rhythm (which according to you is obnoxious). If that's your personal opinion, fine. as for mark, he's just another bassist pounding out root notes and giving guitarists another reason to make fun of bassists. not to say he's a bad bassist, but his basslines are so damn boring.

you know slapping isn't all he does...it definitely is in this video, but he's actually a really incredible all around bassist. sure his fingers aren't as stupidly fast as billy sheehan's or anything, but i'd say there are very few bassists out there that could beat Vic. And i've seen bassists slap/pop entire songs before, and although i definitely prefer it to be picked/plucked, it is definitely musically applicable. It can get a little silly, but it's very usable.

Are the bands around the neck of Regi's Guitar (they look like the wrist bands tennis players wear) there to mute the strings? I've also noticed that Victor uses a smaller one in a similar fashion on his bass.

They're not on there tight enough to be a capo so I'm guessing its to make it where you dont have to worry about finger or palm muting while playing slap.
